Abstract

The remote sensing community is witnessing a rapid growth of foundation models, which provide powerful embeddings for a wide range of downstream tasks. However, practical adoption and fair comparison remain challenging due to substantial heterogeneity in model release formats, platforms and interfaces, and input data specifications. These inconsistencies significantly increase the cost of obtaining, using, and benchmarking embeddings across models. To address this issue, we propose rs-embed, a Python library that offers a unified, region of interst (ROI) centric interface: with a single line of code, users can retrieve embeddings from any supported model for any location and any time range. The library also provides efficient batch processing to enable large-scale embedding generation and evaluation. The code is available at: https://github.com/cybergis/rs-embed

Earth Embeddings

Earth observation is moving from foundation models that users must run themselves toward embedding products that package model feature outputs as reusable data without needing to download and process the imagery used to generate them. Earth embeddings are vectors that summarize locations, image patches, or pixels, letting users analyze compact features instead of repeatedly training or running large models on raw satellite imagery. This chapter explains the main types of Earth embeddings, from implicit location encoders to explicit patch and pixel products, and compares their coverage, resolution, dimensionality, storage cost, licenses, and reproducibility. We review their use in land cover and crop mapping, ecological and hazard modeling, socioeconomic prediction, and semantic search, with evidence on when embeddings improve on conventional features and when pooling, fusion, or spatial transfer limit performance. Two case studies show practical workflows for similarity search and land cover mapping. We close with guidance for choosing, evaluating, storing, compressing, and publishing embeddings, and with open problems in oceanic and atmospheric coverage, uncertainty, and benchmarking.

OlmoEarth v1.3: Embeddings

We make some OlmoEarth embeddings. To do this, we train a new model: OlmoEarth v1.3. OlmoEarth v1.3 is designed to condense multimodal, multitemporal remote sensing data into a single digestible 64 or 128-dimensional vector. OlmoEarth v1.3 produces state-of-the-art embeddings. In addition, OlmoEarth v1.3 is a strong encoder backbone -- competitive with OlmoEarth v1 and v1.2 -- while requiring 18% and 53% of the GPU hours to train, respectively. We use OlmoEarth v1.3 to compute global, annualized 10m embeddings, which we release under the OlmoEarth artifact license.

VLM2GeoVec: Toward Universal Multimodal Embeddings for Remote Sensing

Satellite imagery differs from natural images in viewpoint, resolution, scale variation, and the prevalence of small objects -- demanding both region-level spatial reasoning and holistic scene understanding. Existing remote-sensing approaches are fragmented: dual-encoder retrieval models scale well but cannot interleave modalities, whereas generative assistants support grounding, yet are inefficient for retrieval. Benchmarks mirror this split: interleaved evaluations mainly target generative assistants, while cross-modal retrieval benchmarks target dual encoders. To bridge this gap, we introduce RSMEB, a unified remote sensing benchmark that evaluates cross-modal and interleaved retrieval across 21 tasks under a single ranking protocol, enabling comprehensive comparison of retrieval models on region- and geo-aware capabilities as well as conventional retrieval. As a strong reference baseline, we present VLM2GeoVec, an instruction-conditioned, single-encoder interleaving formulation tailored to remote sensing that packs image, text, bounding-box, and geo-coordinate tokens into one sequence and learns a unified embedding via contrastive training. Across RSMEB, VLM2GeoVec achieves 26.6%\textbf{26.6\%} P@1 in region-caption retrieval (+25\textbf{+25} percentage points), 32.5%\textbf{32.5\%} in referring-expression retrieval (+19\textbf{+19}), and 17.8%\textbf{17.8\%} in semantic geo-aware retrieval (\textbf{>3}$$\times prior best), while remaining competitive in conventional scene classification and text--image retrieval in zero-shot settings. Together, the proposed suite and reference baseline standardize evaluation and deliver a unified embedder for scalable retrieval and region-/geo-aware grounding. The code, the model checkpoints, and the data are available at https://github.com/emasa/VLM2GeoVec.
