Abstract

No-Reference Point Cloud Quality Assessment (NR-PCQA) still struggles with generalization, primarily due to the scarcity of annotated point cloud datasets. Since the Human Visual System (HVS) drives perceptual quality assessment independently of media types, prior knowledge on quality learned from images can be repurposed for point clouds. This insight motivates adopting Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (UDA) to transfer quality-relevant priors from labeled images to unlabeled point clouds. However, existing UDA-based PCQA methods often overlook key characteristics of perceptual quality, such as sensitivity to quality ranking and quality-aware feature alignment, thereby limiting their effectiveness. To address these issues, we propose a novel Quality-aware Domain adaptation framework for PCQA, termed QD-PCQA. The framework comprises two main components: i) a Rank-weighted Conditional Alignment (RCA) strategy that aligns features under consistent quality levels and adaptively emphasizes misranked samples to reinforce perceptual quality ranking awareness; and ii) a Quality-guided Feature Augmentation (QFA) strategy, which includes quality-guided style mixup, multi-layer extension, and dual-domain augmentation modules to augment perceptual feature alignment. Extensive cross-domain experiments demonstrate that QD-PCQA significantly improves generalization in NR-PCQA tasks.

DAL-PCQA: Enabling Distortion-Level and Language-Driven Reasoning for Point Cloud Quality Assessment

Point Cloud Quality Assessment (PCQA) methods typically predict scalar Mean Opinion Scores (MOS), which quantify overall perceptual degradation but do not reveal its causes. In contrast, human observers naturally reason in terms of specific distortions such as blur, color shifts, point density changes, missing regions, and geometric deformations. To close this gap, we introduce DAL-PCQA, a distortion-aware, language-annotated dataset for PCQA. DAL-PCQA augments benchmark point clouds with multi-level distortion severity labels, discrete quality categories, and structured natural language descriptions aligned with human perception. We define a point-cloud-specific distortion taxonomy that covers both photometric and geometric artifacts. Statistical analysis reveals characteristic degradation patterns across distortion types and quality levels. To assess the utility of these annotations, we compare zero-shot and fine-tuned multimodal models for generating perceptual quality descriptions. Experiments show that distortion-aware supervision substantially improves lexical and semantic alignment with ground-truth descriptions. By enabling interpretable, distortion-level reasoning, DAL-PCQA facilitates language-driven, explainable point cloud quality assessment. PCQA-R1: Advancing Generalized 3D Point Cloud Quality Assessment with Reinforcement Learning

No-reference point cloud quality assessment (PCQA) has been an active topic in recent years and is used to measure and optimize the visual experience of point clouds. However, large multimodal models (LMMs) have rarely been explored in this area. Previous LMM-based methods mainly rely on supervised fine-tuning to directly predict numerical quality scores, lacking the ability to generalize across datasets with heterogeneous MOS scales and limited annotations. A key difficulty is that absolute MOS regression can be brittle across datasets with different score scales and distortion distributions, whereas relative quality ranking is more stable under such shifts. In this paper, we present PCQA-R1, the first reinforcement learning LMM for 3D point cloud quality assessment to simultaneously model quality understanding and scoring. Built upon the group relative policy optimization (GRPO) strategy, PCQA-R1 first constructs a chain-of-thought dataset, PCQA-CoT, which serves as cold-start training data through a reverse reasoning strategy that teaches the LMM to generate its reasoning process. We further introduce a Gaussian proximity reward that prevents calibration drift by anchoring score predictions to the source MOS range. Experimental results demonstrate that PCQA-R1 achieves state-of-the-art cross-dataset generalization across five benchmarks and competitive in-domain accuracy. Ablation studies support the role of ranking, Gaussian reward, and cold-start traces.

PointQ-Bench: Benchmarking Diagnostic and Interpretable Point Cloud Quality Assessment

Point cloud quality plays a critical role in 3D acquisition, reconstruction, rendering, and perception, yet existing point cloud quality assessment (PCQA) research remains largely centered on scalar score prediction. In practical inspection scenarios, quality assessment often involves identifying defects, characterizing dominant issue types, assessing downstream usability, and providing evidence-supported descriptions, which are not explicitly evaluated by current benchmarks. We introduce PointQ-Bench, a benchmark designed to extend PCQA from scalar scoring toward comprehensive quality understanding. PointQ-Bench consists of 3,083 point clouds spanning authentic scans, simulated distortions, and AI-generated content, covering eight major issue types. Each sample is annotated with mean opinion scores (MOS), quality levels, issue tags, expert-grounded descriptions, and 12,332 question-answer pairs. The benchmark supports three perception-oriented tasks: anomaly sensing, defect diagnosis, and usability grading, as well as a cognition-oriented task of open-ended quality reporting. To evaluate free-form quality descriptions, we further propose SSFRQ-5D, a five-dimensional evaluation protocol validated through human-AI agreement analysis. Extensive experiments on 14 vision-language models and traditional PCQA baselines reveal a consistent perception-diagnosis gap: while current models exhibit emerging abilities in coarse defect perception, they struggle with grounded diagnosis and quality calibration. Strong 2D MLLMs generally outperform existing 3D VLMs, and the benefit of additional views or point-level inputs is non-uniform, varying across tasks, data sources, and models, particularly under boundary-ambiguous conditions. Overall, PointQ-Bench provides a diagnostic testbed for advancing reliable and interpretable point cloud quality understanding.
