Abstract

Face animation deals with controlling and generating facial features with a wide range of applications. The methods based on unsupervised keypoint positioning can produce realistic and detailed virtual portraits. However, they cannot achieve controllable face generation since the existing keypoint decomposition pipelines fail to fully decouple identity semantics and intertwined motion information (e.g., rotation, translation, and expression). To address these issues, we present a new method, Motion Manipulation via unsupervised keypoint positioning in Face Animation (MMFA). We first introduce self-supervised representation learning to encode and decode expressions in the latent feature space and decouple them from other motion information. Secondly, we propose a new way to compute keypoints aiming to achieve arbitrary motion control. Moreover, we design a variational autoencoder to map expression features to a continuous Gaussian distribution, allowing us for the first time to interpolate facial expressions in an unsupervised framework. We have conducted extensive experiments on publicly available datasets to validate the effectiveness of MMFA, which show that MMFA offers pronounced advantages over prior arts in creating realistic animation and manipulating face motion.

SuperFace: Preference-Aligned Facial Expression Estimation Beyond Pseudo Supervision

Accurate facial estimation is crucial for realistic digital human animation, and ARKit blendshape coefficients offer an interpretable representation by mapping facial motions to semantic animation controls. However, learning high-quality ARKit coefficient prediction remains limited by the absence of reliable ground-truth supervision. Existing methods typically rely on capture software such as Live Link Face to provide pseudo labels, which may contain noisy activations, biased coefficient magnitudes, and missing or inaccurate facial actions. Consequently, models trained with supervised learning tend to reproduce imperfect pseudo labels rather than optimize for perceptual expression fidelity. In this paper, we propose SuperFace, a preference-driven framework that moves ARKit facial expression estimation from pseudo-label imitation toward human-aligned perceptual optimization. Instead of treating software-estimated coefficients as fixed ground truth, SuperFace uses them only as an initialization and further improves coefficient prediction through human preference feedback on rendered facial expressions. By aligning the model with perceptual judgments rather than numerical pseudo labels, SuperFace enables more visually faithful and expressive facial animation. Experiments show that SuperFace improves expression fidelity over Live Link Face supervision, demonstrating the effectiveness of preference-driven optimization for semantic facial action prediction.

KM-Speaker: Keypoint-Based Style Control for High-Quality Speech-Driven 3D Facial Animation and Dialogue Localization

Speech-driven 3D facial animation methods face significant challenges in simultaneously achieving high-fidelity motion and precise artistic control at production quality. Existing controllable models typically learn global style control by relying on large-scale, low-quality in-the-wild datasets that compromise overall animation realism. Furthermore, these frameworks often lack the fine-grained temporal precision required for demanding tasks such as dialogue localization (e.g., dubbing), where matching specific facial expressions is as critical as lip synchronization. We present KM-Speaker (Keypoint-Matching Speaker), a novel keypoint-conditioned flow-based generative framework that provides both global style guidance and frame-level temporal control from reference performances. We propose a disentanglement strategy that separates audio-driven lip motion from keypoint-driven upper-face dynamics, together with a global style context preservation mechanism to ensure coherent full-face expressiveness. KM-Speaker advances example-based 3D facial animation by achieving high-fidelity motion and flexible controllability in a data-constrained setting, consistently outperforming state-of-the-art methods in lip-sync accuracy, style adherence, and expressive temporal control.

Instant Expressive Gaussian Head Avatars at Over 100 FPS

Portrait animation has witnessed tremendous quality improvements thanks to recent advances in video diffusion models. However, these 2D methods often compromise 3D consistency and speed, limiting their applicability in real-world scenarios, such as digital twins or telepresence. In contrast, 3D-aware feedforward facial animation methods -- built upon 3D representations, such as neural radiance fields or Gaussian splatting -- ensure 3D consistency and achieve faster inference speed, but come with inferior expression details. In this paper, we address this portrait animation trilemma (speed, 3D consistency, and expressiveness) and propose a pipeline that instantly converts an in-the-wild single image into a 3D-consistent, fast yet expressive animatable representation via a feed-forward encoder. Unlike previous computationally intensive global fusion mechanisms (e.g., multiple attention layers) for fusing 3D structural and animation information, our design employs an efficient lightweight local fusion strategy to achieve high animation expressivity. Furthermore, our animation representation is decoupled from the face's 3D representation and learns motion implicitly from data, eliminating the dependency on pre-defined parametric models that often constrain animation capabilities. Our method runs at 107.31 FPS for animation and pose control, representing a 3-4 order of magnitude speedup versus the state of the art while achieving comparable animation quality, thus surpassing alternative designs that trade speed for quality or vice versa.
