VDCook:DIY video data cook your MLLMs

Authors: Chengwei Wu

Abstract

We introduce VDCook: a self-evolving video data operating system, a configurable video data construction platform for researchers and vertical domain teams. Users initiate data requests via natural language queries and adjustable parameters (scale, retrieval-synthesis ratio, quality threshold). The system automatically performs query optimization, concurrently running real video retrieval and controlled synthesis modules. It ultimately generates in-domain data packages with complete provenance and metadata, along with reproducible Notebooks. Unlike traditional static, one-time-built datasets, VDCook enables continuous updates and domain expansion through its automated data ingestion mechanism based on MCP (Model Context Protocol)\cite{mcp2024anthropic}, transforming datasets into dynamically evolving open ecosystems. The system also provides multi-dimensional metadata annotation (scene segmentation, motion scoring, OCR ratio, automatic captioning, etc.), laying the foundation for flexible subsequent data `cooking' and indexing\cite{vlogger}. This platform aims to significantly lower the barrier to constructing specialized video training datasets through infrastructure-level solutions, while supporting community contributions and a governance-enabled data expansion paradigm. VidaForge: Open Research Infrastructure for Video Pretraining Data Recipes

Video foundation models increasingly rely on large-scale pretraining data, yet the end-to-end data pipelines behind them remain largely closed and difficult to inspect or reuse. Researchers seeking to understand how video data recipes affect model pretraining often need to build substantial infrastructure before testing even a focused hypothesis. We present VIDAFORGE, an open research infrastructure that represents a video data recipe as an executable five-stage workflow from raw videos to training datasets. A decision in this workflow can be varied to construct alternative datasets while preserving how every sample was produced. To demon strate this research workflow, we compare data recipes with different coverage and quality in early from-scratch pretraining of Wan 2.1 and V-JEPA 2.1. Across both learning objectives, the broader-coverage recipe achieves the highest downstream benchmark scores, while loss-based evaluation favors different recipes. This study demonstrates how VidaForge connects data-recipe choices to downstream model performance. We further release VIDAFORGE-3M, containing 3.14 million scene level clips totaling 6,475 hours, with fine-grained annotations and curation signals for video data-recipe research.

DataMagic: Authoring Data Videos through Declarative Multi-Agent Orchestration

Data videos communicate data insights through dynamic charts, voice narration, and synchronized animations, and have become a widely adopted form of data storytelling. However, producing them requires expertise in data analysis, narrative design, and video editing. Static visualization tools lack narrative and animation capabilities; authoring tools rely on pre-prepared charts rather than raw data; and pixel-level models generate videos end-to-end but cannot guarantee data accuracy or provenance. End-to-end automatic generation faces two core challenges: how to uniformly represent charts, narration, and animations together with their temporal relationships, and how to efficiently search a vast design space for narrative-coherent compositions. We present DataMagic, which authors data videos from raw tabular data through declarative multi-agent orchestration. First, the declarative specification DVSpec unifies charts, narration, and animations with data-bound references and declarative synchronization, ensuring data provenance and automatic audio-visual alignment. Second, a "Generate-then-Orchestrate" multi-agent strategy generates candidate scenes in parallel and then optimizes narrative coherence through global orchestration. DVSpec provides a shared state for three complementary interaction modes, bridging full automation with fine-grained human control. Evaluations on 109 real-world samples show that even the most advanced LLM (e.g., GPT-5) achieves only 2.13/5 with execution success rates between 48.62% and 86.24%; DataMagic improves quality to 3.89 (+83%) with success rates above 95%, with the most significant gains in animation and narrative dimensions. A user study shows that, compared to a conversational LLM workflow, DataMagic improves creation efficiency (79.7% reduction in task time) and reduces perceived cognitive load. DataCube: A Video Retrieval Platform via Natural Language Semantic Profiling

Large-scale video repositories are increasingly available for modern video understanding and generation tasks. However, transforming raw videos into high-quality, task-specific datasets remains costly and inefficient. We present DataCube, an intelligent platform for automatic video processing, multi-dimensional profiling, and query-driven retrieval. DataCube constructs structured semantic representations of video clips and supports hybrid retrieval with neural re-ranking and deep semantic matching. Through an interactive web interface, users can efficiently construct customized video subsets from massive repositories for training, analysis, and evaluation, and build searchable systems over their own private video collections. The system is publicly accessible at https://datacube.baai.ac.cn/.
