Abstract

Diffuse direct time-of-flight LiDARs report per-pixel depth histograms formed by aggregating photon returns over a wide instantaneous field of view, violating the single-ray assumption behind standard LiDAR-RGB calibration. We present a simple spatial calibration procedure that estimates, for each diffuse LiDAR pixel, its footprint (effective support region) and relative spatial sensitivity in a co-located RGB image plane. Using a scanned retroreflective patch with background subtraction, we recover per-pixel response maps that provide an explicit LiDAR-to-RGB correspondence for cross-modal alignment and fusion. We demonstrate the method on the ams OSRAM TMF8828.

Calibration-Informative Region Selection for Online LiDAR--Camera Calibration in Agricultural Environments

Reliable multi-modal calibration requires identifying which observations truly constrain the extrinsic parameters and which ones mainly add noise or ambiguity. In this paper, we propose a support-map-driven approach to multi-modal calibration that decouples four functional blocks: initial calibration, cross-modal residual extraction, support-map estimation, and support-aware refinement. We instantiate this formulation for online LiDAR--camera calibration using MDPCalib, a target-less LiDAR--camera calibration method based on motion and deep point correspondences, and CMRNext, a dense LiDAR--camera matching model that predicts optical-flow-like image-plane residuals. The key contribution is a dense calibration support map that aggregates cross-modal agreement over aligned observations and highlights where calibration evidence is consistently reliable. Across the Bacchus Long-Term (BLT) dataset and KITTI, we show that calibration evidence is spatially and semantically non-uniform, indicating that some semantic regions provide stronger cues for calibration than others. On KITTI, support-guided refinement improves the calibration performance with better translation accuracy while rotational gains remain limited.

LV-Calib: LiDAR-Camera Extrinsic Calibration with Boundary-Response Modeling

We present LV-Calib, a calibration framework for LiDAR-camera extrinsic estimation and LiDAR boundary-response calibration using a printable planar target. The target serves as a shared observation carrier: visual fiducials provide indexed image measurements, while circular reflectivity boundaries provide LiDAR-observable structural feature points. Instead of directly fitting boundary points as ideal geometric contours, LV-Calib automatically crops background points, estimates the target plane, and iteratively refines accurate LiDAR-side 3-D feature points from intensity and geometric constraints. The refinement explicitly handles the broadened and distorted transition band induced by finite beam footprint and mixed-intensity returns around black-white reflectivity discontinuities. Given these refined LiDAR features, we formulate a weighted reprojection-consistent extrinsic optimization with LiDAR feature alignment, where image observations are kept in the reprojection domain and LiDAR feature residuals are weighted by refinement confidence. Finally, using the estimated extrinsic and the extracted transition band, LV-Calib calibrates the LiDAR boundary response by estimating pitch-yaw-range residual statistics of boundary-overlap samples. Experiments on printed-board calibration data demonstrate sub-pixel reprojection accuracy, millimeter-level LiDAR feature consistency, and improved odometry performance. Code and calibration data will be released for reproducible evaluation.

Generalizable Target-Less Joint Intrinsic-Extrinsic Camera-LiDAR Calibration using Deep Pixel-Point Correspondences

Accurate camera-LiDAR calibration is an essential prerequisite for robust multi-modal perception in robotics. Recent target-less methods based on learned pixel-point correspondences achieve high extrinsic calibration accuracy and generalize across environments. However, they operate on rectified images with known camera intrinsics, restricting their applicability to systems whose cameras have already been individually calibrated. We present a fully automatic, target-less framework that jointly estimates camera intrinsics, radial-tangential distortion, and camera-LiDAR extrinsics from raw images and LiDAR scans. Our method generalizes deep correspondence-based calibration from rectified images to raw cameras through intrinsic- and distortion-aware correspondence learning via synthetic augmentations. During calibration, we iteratively couple correspondence prediction and nonlinear optimization to jointly refine the camera parameters and relative sensor transformation. We evaluate our approach on an unseen camera-LiDAR configuration from the KITTI dataset and on three real robotic platforms in a zero-shot manner. The results demonstrate that joint calibration with our generalized pixel-point correspondence network improves extrinsic accuracy over correspondence-based methods using pre-calibrated cameras, while additionally recovering accurate intrinsics.
