Enhancing Hands in 3D Whole-Body Pose Estimation with Conditional Hands Modulator

Abstract

Accurately recovering hand poses within the body context remains a major challenge in 3D whole-body pose estimation. This difficulty arises from a fundamental supervision gap: whole-body pose estimators are trained on full-body datasets with limited hand diversity, while hand-only estimators, trained on hand-centric datasets, excel at detailed finger articulation but lack global body awareness. To address this, we propose Hand4Whole++, a modular framework that leverages the strengths of both pre-trained whole-body and hand pose estimators. We introduce CHAM (Conditional Hands Modulator), a lightweight module that modulates the whole-body feature stream using hand-specific features extracted from a pre-trained hand pose estimator. This modulation enables the whole-body model to predict wrist orientations that are both accurate and coherent with the upper-body kinematic structure, without retraining the full-body model. In parallel, we directly incorporate finger articulations and hand shapes predicted by the hand pose estimator, aligning them to the full-body mesh via differentiable rigid alignment. This design allows Hand4Whole++ to combine globally consistent body reasoning with fine-grained hand detail. Extensive experiments demonstrate that Hand4Whole++ substantially improves hand accuracy and enhances overall full-body pose quality.

REACH: Hand Pose Estimation from Room Corners

We introduce a novel 3D hand pose estimator that can accurately recover the shape and pose of people's hands in a room from afar, typically from fixed cameras at room corners, in extremely low-resolution and frequently occluded views. Our key idea is to fully leverage hand-body coordination, its temporal progression, and multiview observations. We achieve this with a novel Transformer-based model, in which hand and body configurations are modeled through correlations between their visual features expressed as per-view tokens, and their temporal coordination is exploited in an autoregressive manner. We introduce a novel dataset, which we refer to as REACH, Room-Environment dataset Annotated with Chest cameras for Hand pose estimation, to train and test our method. REACH is a first-of-its-kind large-scale hand pose dataset that captures accurate hand movements of 50 participants across a wide variety of daily activities. In order to avoid interfering with natural movements while annotating the hands with accurate shape and pose, we leverage concealed chest cameras. Through extensive experiments, including comparative studies with existing methods, we show that our model, REACH-Net, achieves highly accurate 3D hand pose estimation from afar. These results broaden the horizon of 3D hand pose estimation, especially towards "in-the-wild" continuous human behavior analysis.

Chatting about Upper-Body Expressive Human Pose and Shape Estimation

Expressive Human Pose and Shape Estimation (EHPS) plays a crucial role in various AR/VR applications and has witnessed significant progress in recent years. However, current state-of-the-art methods still struggle with accurate parameter estimation for facial and hand regions and exhibit limited generalization to wild images. To address these challenges, we present CoEvoer, a novel one-stage synergistic cross-dependency transformer framework tailored for upper-body EHPS. CoEvoer enables explicit feature-level interaction across different body parts, allowing for mutual enhancement through contextual information exchange. Specifically, larger and more easily estimated regions such as the torso provide global semantics and positional priors to guide the estimation of finer, more complex regions like the face and hands. Conversely, the localized details captured in facial and hand regions help refine and calibrate adjacent body parts. To the best of our knowledge, CoEvoer is the first framework designed specifically for upper-body EHPS, with the goal of capturing the strong coupling and semantic dependencies among the face, hands, and torso through joint parameter regression. Extensive experiments demonstrate that CoEvoer achieves state-of-the-art performance on upper-body benchmarks and exhibits strong generalization capability even on unseen wild images.

Estimating Accurate Hand Pose in Camera Space with Vision Transformer

Monocular RGB-based hand pose estimation has emerged as a critical research frontier in computer vision. The local hand pose estimation methods predict hand poses relative to the wrist, while global hand pose estimation also requires estimating the wrist's position in the camera coordinate system. However, this camera-space estimation confronts two fundamental challenges: (1) depth ambiguity in monocular settings, and (2) the coupling effect of hand local poses and global wrist positions in the perspective projections. In particular, this coupling reflects that the projections are jointly determined by local hand poses, wrist positions, and camera intrinsics. To overcome these challenges, our framework proposes two key innovations: Transformation-Isomorphism Supervision for hand-depth information extraction and Perspective Information Embedding for resolving above coupling effect of local pose and wrist position, both integrated within the mainstream encoder-decoder architecture. Besides, we propose a novel framerate-aware multi-dataset training strategy for sequential pose refinement. Our fully integrated approach achieves at most 37.1% superiority in CS-MJE over SOTA on HO3D. Project page: https://github.com/Mine268/CS-ViT.
