Customizing ChatGPT for Second Language Speaking Practice: Genuine Support or Just a Marketing Gimmick?

Authors: Fanfei Meng

Abstract

ChatGPT, with its customization features and Voice Mode, has the potential for more engaging and peresonalized ESL (English as a Second Language) education. This study examines the efficacy of customized ChatGPT conversational features in facilitating ESL speaking practices, comparing the performance of four versions of ChatGPT Voice Mode: uncustomized Standard mode, uncustomized Advanced mode, customized Standard mode, and customized Advanced mode. Customization was guided by prompt engineering principles and grounded in relevant theories, including Motivation Theory, Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT), Communicative Language Teaching (CLT), and the Affective Filter Hypothesis. Content analysis found that customized versions generally provided more balanced feedback and emotional support, contributing to a positive and motivating learning environment. However, cultural responsiveness did not show significant improvement despite targeted customization efforts. These initial findings suggest that customization could enhance ChatGPT's capacity as a more effective language tutor, with the standard model already capable of meeting the learning needs. The study underscores the importance of prompt engineering and AI literacy in maximizaing AI's potential in language learning.

Dialogue Act Patterns in GenAI-Mediated L2 Oral Practice: A Sequential Analysis of Learner-Chatbot Interactions

While generative AI (GenAI) voice chatbots offer scalable opportunities for second language (L2) oral practice, the interactional processes related to learners' gains remain underexplored. This study investigates dialogue act (DA) patterns in interactions between Grade 9 Chinese English as a foreign language (EFL) learners and a GenAI voice chatbot over a 10-week intervention. Seventy sessions from 12 students were annotated by human coders using a pedagogy-informed coding scheme, yielding 6,957 coded DAs. DA distributions and sequential patterns were compared between high- and low-progress sessions. At the DA level, high-progress sessions showed more learner-initiated questions, whereas low-progress sessions exhibited higher rates of clarification-seeking, indicating greater comprehension difficulty. At the sequential level, high-progress sessions were characterised by more frequent prompting-based corrective feedback sequences, consistently positioned after learner responses, highlighting the role of feedback type and timing in effective interaction. Overall, these findings underscore the value of a dialogic lens in GenAI chatbot design, contribute a pedagogy-informed DA coding framework, and inform the design of adaptive GenAI chatbots for L2 education.

TACT: Taxonomy-Aligned Post-Training for Pedagogically Adaptive English Tutoring

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used to provide conversational practice for English-as-a-second-language (ESL) learners. Effective ESL tutoring, however, requires more than fluent response generation: a tutor must select an appropriate pedagogical action based on learner behavior and dialogue context. Human-tutoring research offers principles for adaptive support, but they are often task-specific and remain insufficiently integrated into LLM-based ESL tutor training and evaluation. We present TACT (Taxonomy-Aligned Conversational Tutor), a human-grounded framework for post-training and evaluating pedagogically adaptive ESL tutors. Drawing on established literature, we develop two complementary taxonomies: the Tutor-Strategy Taxonomy with 13 tutor response strategies and the Student-Move Taxonomy characterizing learner behavior by move type and status. Using these taxonomies, we construct TACTCorpus, which enriches 260 authentic teacher-student conversations with 32,379 annotations and quality-controlled augmented training data. We then post-train Qwen3.5-4B through supervised fine-tuning followed by taxonomy-aligned Group Relative Policy Optimization, producing TACTutor and optimizing it for scaffolding quality rather than reference imitation alone. On TACTBench, a strategy-balanced diagnostic benchmark comprising 78 authentic tutoring contexts, TACTutor improves over its backbone by 20.30% and outperforms all evaluated proprietary baselines under the same protocol, while maintaining backbone performance on established external educational benchmarks; in a blinded study with 50 learners, it also receives the highest overall mean rating among the evaluated tutors. We release the data, benchmark, and model weights, providing an open foundation for developing pedagogically adaptive ESL tutors.

Controllable Spoken Dialogue Generation: An LLM-Driven Grading System for K-12 Non-Native English Learners

Large language models (LLMs) often fail to meet the pedagogical needs of K-12 English learners in non-native contexts due to a proficiency mismatch. To address this widespread challenge, we introduce a proficiency-aligned framework that adapts LLM outputs to learner abilities, using China's national curriculum (CSE) as a representative case. Our framework enables precise control over lexical complexity through a four-tier grading system, supported by a comprehensive suite of new resources: graded vocabulary lists and a multi-turn dialogue corpus. Our core technical contribution is the DDPO algorithm,Diversity Driven Policy Optimization, a multi-turn GRPO-based approach designed to preserve dialogue diversity while holistically optimizing dialogue quality. This method significantly outperforms conventional approaches, achieving low out-of-vocabulary rates and high diversity while enhancing conversational naturalness and pedagogical value. While grounded in the CSE, our framework is designed for flexibility and can be readily adapted to other educational standards. Our models, data, and code will all be open-sourced, providing a scalable platform for personalized English speaking practice that effectively addresses the unique challenges faced by K-12 learners in non-immersive environments.
