Abstract

The proliferation of data across the system lifecycle presents both a significant opportunity and a challenge for Engineering Design and Systems Engineering (EDSE). While this "digital thread" has the potential to drive innovation, the fragmented and inaccessible nature of existing datasets hinders method validation, limits reproducibility, and slows research progress. Unlike fields such as computer vision and natural language processing, which benefit from established benchmark ecosystems, engineering design research often relies on small, proprietary, or ad-hoc datasets. This paper addresses this challenge by proposing a systematic framework for a "Map of Datasets in EDSE." The framework is built upon a multi-dimensional taxonomy designed to classify engineering datasets by domain, lifecycle stage, data type, and format, enabling faceted discovery. An architecture for an interactive discovery tool is detailed and demonstrated through a working prototype, employing a knowledge graph data model to capture rich semantic relationships between datasets, tools, and publications. An analysis of the current data landscape reveals underrepresented areas ("data deserts") in early-stage design and system architecture, as well as relatively well-represented areas ("data oases") in predictive maintenance and autonomous systems. The paper identifies key challenges in curation and sustainability and proposes mitigation strategies, laying the groundwork for a dynamic, community-driven resource to accelerate data-centric engineering research.

SeDa: A Unified System for Dataset Discovery and Multi-Entity Augmented Semantic Exploration

The continuous expansion of open data platforms and research repositories has led to a fragmented dataset ecosystem, posing significant challenges for cross-source data discovery and interpretation. To address these challenges, we introduce SeDa--a unified framework for dataset discovery, semantic annotation, and multi-entity augmented navigation. SeDa integrates more than 7.6 million datasets from over 200 platforms, spanning governmental, academic, and industrial domains. The framework first performs semantic extraction and standardization to harmonize heterogeneous metadata representations. On this basis, a topic-tagging mechanism constructs an extensible tag graph that supports thematic retrieval and cross-domain association, while a provenance assurance module embedded within the annotation process continuously validates dataset sources and monitors link availability to ensure reliability and traceability. Furthermore, SeDa employs a multi-entity augmented navigation strategy that organizes datasets within a knowledge space of sites, institutions, and enterprises, enabling contextual and provenance-aware exploration beyond traditional search paradigms. Comparative experiments with popular dataset search platforms, such as ChatPD and Google Dataset Search, demonstrate that SeDa achieves superior coverage, timeliness, and traceability. Taken together, SeDa establishes a foundation for trustworthy, semantically enriched, and globally scalable dataset exploration.

GENAI WORKBENCH: AI-Assisted Analysis and Synthesis of Engineering Systems from Multimodal Engineering Data

Modern engineering design platforms excel at discipline-specific tasks such as CAD, CAM, and CAE, but often lack native systems engineering frameworks. This creates a disconnect where system-level requirements and architectures are managed separately from detailed component design, hindering holistic development and increasing integration risks. To address this, we present the conceptual framework for the GenAI Workbench, a Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) environment that integrates systems engineering principles into the designer's workflow. Built on an open-source PLM platform, it establishes a unified digital thread by linking semantic data from documents, physical B-rep geometry, and relational system graphs. The workbench facilitates an AI-assisted workflow where a designer can ingest source documents, from which the system automatically extracts requirements and uses vision-language models to generate an initial system architecture, such as a Design Structure Matrix (DSM). This paper presents the conceptual architecture, proposed methodology, and anticipated impact of this work-in-progress framework, which aims to foster a more integrated, data-driven, and informed engineering design methodology.

Open Datasets in Learning Analytics: Trends, Challenges, and Best PRACTICE

Open datasets play a crucial role in three research domains that intersect data science and education: learning analytics, educational data mining, and artificial intelligence in education. Researchers in these domains apply computational methods to analyze data from educational contexts, aiming to better understand and improve teaching and learning. Providing open datasets alongside research papers supports reproducibility, collaboration, and trust in research findings. It also provides individual benefits for authors, such as greater visibility, credibility, and citation potential. Despite these advantages, the availability of open datasets and the associated practices within the learning analytics research communities, especially at their flagship conference venues, remain unclear. We surveyed available datasets published alongside research papers in learning analytics. We manually examined 1,125 papers from three flagship conferences (LAK, EDM, and AIED) over the past five years. We discovered, categorized, and analyzed 172 datasets used in 204 publications. Our study presents the most comprehensive collection and analysis of open educational datasets to date, along with the most detailed categorization. Of the 172 datasets identified, 143 were not captured in any prior survey of open data in learning analytics. We provide insights into the datasets' context, analytical methods, use, and other properties. Based on this survey, we summarize the current gaps in the field. Furthermore, we list practical recommendations, advice, and 8-item guidelines under the acronym PRACTICE with a checklist to help researchers publish their data. Lastly, we share our original dataset: an annotated inventory detailing the discovered datasets and the corresponding publications. We hope these findings will support further adoption of open data practices in learning analytics communities and beyond.
