Abstract

Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP-OLS) and Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (SNPP-VIIRS) nighttime light (NTL) data are vital for monitoring urbanization, yet sensor incompatibilities hinder long-term analysis. This study proposes a cross-sensor calibration method using Contrastive Unpaired Translation (CUT) network to transform DMSP data into VIIRS-like format, correcting DMSP defects. The method employs multilayer patch-wise contrastive learning to maximize mutual information between corresponding patches, preserving content consistency while learning cross-domain similarity. Utilizing 2012-2013 overlapping data for training, the network processes 1992-2013 DMSP imagery to generate enhanced VIIRS-style raster data. Validation results demonstrate that generated VIIRS-like data exhibits high consistency with actual VIIRS observations (R-squared greater than 0.87) and socioeconomic indicators. This approach effectively resolves cross-sensor data fusion issues and calibrates DMSP defects, providing reliable attempt for extended NTL time-series.

VPRef: A Cross-Domain Benchmark for Referring Remote Sensing Image Segmentation

Rapid advancements in vision-language models have propelled Referring Remote Sensing Image Segmentation (RRSIS) to the forefront of Earth observation. However, practical deployments suffer severe performance degradation under a coupled dual-drift paradigm: visual domain drift from cross-spatial-resolution mismatches and spectral variations, alongside textual logic drift from unconstrained, variable user-input granularities. To mitigate these bottlenecks, this paper establishes the first cross-domain RRSIS benchmark, designated as the Vaihingen-Potsdam Referring (VPRef) dataset, comprising 46,972 language-image-annotation triplets organized into a three-tier linguistic hierarchy. Building upon this benchmark, we develop a tailored parameter-efficient domain adaptation baseline anchored on the Segment Anything Model (SAM3) via Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA). Our framework counteracts visual distribution discrepancies through pseudo-label-driven self-training and addresses textual logic drift via random multi-granularity text prompt mixing. Crucially, the distribution of empirical metrics across ablative variants suggests a potential decoupling between cross-modal semantic robustification and visual domain alignment, demonstrating that linguistic variance drives fine-grained semantic invariance while pseudo-label propagation governs macro-scale spatial grid alignment. Extensive benchmarks demonstrate the proposed framework achieves superior cross-domain segmentation boundaries while modifying merely 1.08% of the foundational parameter footprint, establishing a robust baseline for future multi-modal remote sensing domain adaptation research. Beyond Strict Pairing: Arbitrarily Paired Training for High-Performance Infrared and Visible Image Fusion

Infrared and visible image fusion(IVIF) combines complementary modalities while preserving natural textures and salient thermal signatures. Existing solutions predominantly rely on extensive sets of rigidly aligned image pairs for training. However, acquiring such data is often impractical due to the costly and labour-intensive alignment process. Besides, maintaining a rigid pairing setting during training restricts the volume of cross-modal relationships, thereby limiting generalisation performance. To this end, this work challenges the necessity of Strictly Paired Training Paradigm (SPTP) by systematically investigating UnPaired and Arbitrarily Paired Training Paradigms (UPTP and APTP) for high-performance IVIF. We establish a theoretical objective of APTP, reflecting the complementary nature between UPTP and SPTP. More importantly, we develop a practical framework capable of significantly enriching cross-modal relationships even with severely limited and unaligned training data. To validate our propositions, three end-to-end lightweight baselines, alongside a set of innovative loss functions, are designed to cover three classic frameworks (CNN, Transformer, GAN). Comprehensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed APTP and UPTP are feasible and capable of training models on a severely limited and content-inconsistent infrared and visible dataset, achieving performance comparable to that of a dataset 100×\times larger in SPTP. This finding fundamentally alleviates the cost and difficulty of data collection while enhancing model robustness from the data perspective, delivering a feasible solution for IVIF studies. BeyondFusion: Self-Aligned Latent Diffusion for Calibration-Free Infrared Super-Resolution and Infrared-Visible Fusion

Mobile infrared-visible imaging typically pairs a compact infrared sensor with a high-resolution visible camera for complementary perception. While cross-sensor misalignment caused by different optics, viewpoints, fields of view, and exposure timings hinders practical deployment. In this paper, we propose BeyondFusion, a unified latent diffusion framework for calibration-free visible-guided infrared super-resolution and infrared-visible fusion tasks. The proposed framework supports both task-specific training and joint training where two tasks are optimized and executed as two readouts of the same generative process. Instead of relying on explicit registration or geometric warping, BeyondFusion introduces a cross-modal self-aligning (CMSA) module into the denoising U-Net. CMSA reorganizes infrared and visible latent tokens into a shared attention space to learn content-adaptive cross-modal correspondence during the denoising process. Together with misalignment augmentation module, the model is facilitated to exploit visible structural and semantic cues while preserving thermal consistency, enabling high-frequency infrared reconstruction and informative fused-image generation under uncalibrated conditions. Extensive experiments on public benchmarks and a mobile infrared-visible imaging system show strong performance across aligned inputs, low-resolution infrared observations, synthetic misalignments, and real mobile captures with unsynchronized sensors. Ablation studies, unified training analysis, and downstream pedestrian detection further validate the effectiveness of BeyondFusion for calibration-free multimodal imaging.
