Abstract

Facial beauty prediction (FBP) is an important and challenging problem in the fields of computer vision and machine learning. Not only it is easily prone to overfitting due to the lack of large-scale and effective data, but also difficult to quickly build robust and effective facial beauty evaluation models because of the variability of facial appearance and the complexity of human perception. Transfer Learning can be able to reduce the dependence on large amounts of data as well as avoid overfitting problems. Broad learning system (BLS) can be capable of quickly completing models building and training. For this purpose, Transfer Learning was fused with BLS for FBP in this paper. Firstly, a feature extractor is constructed by way of CNNs models based on transfer learning for facial feature extraction, in which EfficientNets are used in this paper, and the fused features of facial beauty extracted are transferred to BLS for FBP, called E-BLS. Secondly, on the basis of E-BLS, a connection layer is designed to connect the feature extractor and BLS, called ER-BLS. Finally, experimental results show that, compared with the previous BLS and CNNs methods existed, the accuracy of FBP was improved by E-BLS and ER-BLS, demonstrating the effectiveness and superiority of the method presented, which can also be widely used in pattern recognition, object detection and image classification.

A Comparative Transfer-Learning Study of CNN Backbones for Partial Face Recognition on the SoF Dataset

Face recognition is widely deployed in surveillance, access control, and forensic workflows, yet accuracy degrades sharply once the face is occluded by accessories, foreground objects, or the frame edge. Because most faces in the wild are partial, robust partial face recognition (PFR) remains open. This paper compares three pretrained convolutional backbones, ResNet-50, VGG-16, and FaceNet, fine-tuned for PFR by transfer learning under identical preprocessing, splitting, and optimization protocols on the Specs-on-Faces (SoF) dataset. All three arms use a common 160x160 input and a frozen backbone with a trainable head under a fixed epoch budget and no per-backbone hyperparameter search. The FaceNet configuration, denoted PFN (Partial FaceNet), substantially outperforms the other two, reaching 97.4% test accuracy with macro-averaged 87.04% precision, 84.61% recall, and 84.17% F1 over the 112 identity classes, the highest accuracy and recall reported on SoF.

MeFEm: Medical Face Embedding model

We present MeFEm, a vision model based on a modified Joint Embedding Predictive Architecture (JEPA) for biometric and medical analysis from facial images. Key modifications include an axial stripe masking strategy to focus learning on semantically relevant regions, a circular loss weighting scheme, and the probabilistic reassignment of the CLS token for high quality linear probing. Trained on a consolidated dataset of curated images, MeFEm outperforms strong baselines like FaRL and Franca on core anthropometric tasks despite using significantly less data. It also shows promising results on Body Mass Index (BMI) estimation, evaluated on a novel, consolidated closed-source dataset that addresses the domain bias prevalent in existing data. Model weights are available at https://huggingface.co/boretsyury/MeFEm , offering a strong baseline for future work in this domain.

UniBioTransfer: A Unified Framework for Multiple Biometrics Transfer

Deepface generation has traditionally followed a task-driven paradigm, where distinct tasks (e.g., face transfer and hair transfer) are addressed by task-specific models. Nevertheless, this single-task setting severely limits model generalization and scalability. A unified model capable of solving multiple deepface generation tasks in a single pass represents a promising and practical direction, yet remains challenging due to data scarcity and cross-task conflicts arising from heterogeneous attribute transformations. To this end, we propose UniBioTransfer, the first unified framework capable of handling both conventional deepface tasks (e.g., face transfer and face reenactment) and shape-varying transformations (e.g., hair transfer and head transfer). Besides, UniBioTransfer naturally generalizes to unseen tasks, like lip, eye, and glasses transfer, with minimal fine-tuning. Generally, UniBioTransfer addresses data insufficiency in multi-task generation through a unified data construction strategy, including a swapping-based corruption mechanism designed for spatially dynamic attributes like hair. It further mitigates cross-task interference via an innovative BioMoE, a mixture-of-experts based model coupled with a novel two-stage training strategy that effectively disentangles task-specific knowledge. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness, generalization, and scalability of UniBioTransfer, outperforming both existing unified models and task-specific methods across a wide range of deepface generation tasks.
