Abstract

Federated learning (FL) has emerged as a promising paradigm for privacy-preserving multi-camera video understanding. However, applying FL to cross-view scenarios faces three major challenges: (i) heterogeneous viewpoints and backgrounds lead to highly non-IID client distributions and overfitting to view-specific patterns, (ii) local distribution biases cause misaligned representations that hinder consistent cross-view semantics, and (iii) large video architectures incur prohibitive communication overhead. To address these issues, we propose FedCVU, a federated framework with three components: VS-Norm, which preserves normalization parameters to handle view-specific statistics; CV-Align, a lightweight contrastive regularization module to improve cross-view representation alignment; and SLA, a selective layer aggregation strategy that reduces communication without sacrificing accuracy. Extensive experiments on action understanding and person re-identification tasks under a cross-view protocol demonstrate that FedCVU consistently boosts unseen-view accuracy while maintaining strong seen-view performance, outperforming state-of-the-art FL baselines and showing robustness to domain heterogeneity and communication constraints.

Multi-Scale Temporal Domain Alignment for Federated Video Domain Adaptation

Federated Video Domain Adaptation (FVDA) enables collaborative learning across distributed and non-IID video datasets while preserving privacy, but is under-explored due to challenges in aligning temporal information. We propose Multi-scalE Temporal domAin aLignment (METAL), a novel framework that leverages temporal information at multiple resolutions to improve cross-domain video action recognition with only model parameter transfers. METAL trains per-scale transformer encoders on source-clients, then performs independent knowledge voting at each temporal scale to generate robust pseudo-labels on the target-server. A novel L2L_2 variance penalty enforces cross-scale consistency during scale-based knowledge distillation, preventing a singular dominant scale. The late fusion aggregates features across different scales, where the fusion head is trained via knowledge distillation using confidence-weighted aggregation of scale-wise predictions, enabling the model to effectively exploit complementary temporal information for final predictions. Experiments on Epic-Kitchens-55 and Daily-DA demonstrate state-of-the-art performances, with gains up to 28.47% over current FDA methods. Ablation studies prove that multi-scale distillation and scale coordination are critical for effective temporal knowledge transfer.

FedVAR: Prototype-Aligned Federated Framework for Video Anomaly Recognition

In the era of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), Federated Learning (FL) offers a promising decentralized intelligence paradigm for Video Anomaly Recognition (VAR). This task is vital for maintaining high-fidelity Digital Twins and ensuring safety in mission-critical environments. However, the inherent data heterogeneity across distributed edge clients leads to a fundamental challenge known as semantic misalignment, where clients learn divergent feature representations of "normal" and "abnormal" events. The problem becomes particularly pronounced in VAR, where the presence of diverse and fine-grained anomaly categories leads each client to develop distinct semantic interpretations of abnormality. Existing federated methods primarily focus on binary anomaly detection and fail to address this misalignment, preventing effective fine-grained recognition. In this paper, we introduce FedVAR, a weakly-supervised FL framework explicitly designed for VAR. Leveraging the rich representations of Vision-Language Models (VLMs), FedVAR employs a prototype-based alignment mechanism that creates a shared semantic anchor for all clients to re-center and align their visual and textual feature spaces. This process enforces a consistent representation of "normality" across the decentralized network, directly mitigating semantic misalignment and enabling robust prompt-learning of anomaly direction vectors with minimal communication overhead. We conduct extensive experiments on challenging benchmarks under various non-IID data partitioning schemes, unseen domains, and novel anomaly classes. The results demonstrate that FedVAR consistently outperforms state-of-the-art federated baselines, establishing a robust framework for distributed intelligence in video-based CPS.

Privacy-Preserving Federated Action Recognition via Differentially Private Selective Tuning and Efficient Communication

Federated video action recognition enables collaborative model training without sharing raw video data, yet remains vulnerable to two key challenges: model exposure and communication overhead. Gradients exchanged between clients and the server can leak private motion patterns, while full-model synchronization of high-dimensional video networks causes significant bandwidth and communication costs. To address these issues, we propose Federated Differential Privacy with Selective Tuning and Efficient Communication for Action Recognition, namely FedDP-STECAR. Our FedDP-STECAR framework selectively fine-tunes and perturbs only a small subset of task-relevant layers under Differential Privacy (DP), reducing the surface of information leakage while preserving temporal coherence in video features. By transmitting only the tuned layers during aggregation, communication traffic is reduced by over 99% compared to full-model updates. Experiments on the UCF-101 dataset using the MViT-B-16x4 transformer show that FedDP-STECAR achieves up to 70.2% higher accuracy under strict privacy (ε=0.65ε=0.65) in centralized settings and 48% faster training with 73.1% accuracy in federated setups, enabling scalable and privacy-preserving video action recognition.
