Abstract

Knowledge distillation transfers knowledge from large teacher models to smaller students for efficient inference. While existing methods primarily focus on distillation strategies, they often overlook the importance of enhancing teacher knowledge quality. In this paper, we propose Text-guided Multi-view Knowledge Distillation (TMKD), which leverages dual-modality teachers, a visual teacher and a text teacher (CLIP), to provide richer supervisory signals. Specifically, we enhance the visual teacher with multi-view inputs incorporating visual priors (edge and high-frequency features), while the text teacher generates semantic weights through prior-aware prompts to guide adaptive feature fusion. Additionally, we introduce vision-language contrastive regularization to strengthen semantic knowledge in the student model. Extensive experiments on five benchmarks demonstrate that TMKD consistently improves knowledge distillation performance by up to 4.49%, validating the effectiveness of our dual-teacher multi-view enhancement strategy. KVE-KD: Key Visual Evidence-Guided Knowledge Distillation for Vision-Language Models

Knowledge distillation is crucial for deploying vision-language models on resource-constrained devices. However, existing methods typically impose uniform supervision across visual tokens or rely on static token selection, which confuses task-relevant cues with background noise and degrades cross-modal reasoning. To address this limitation, we propose Key Visual Evidence-guided Knowledge Distillation (KVE-KD), a framework that dynamically focuses feature distillation on task-relevant visual tokens identified by the teacher model. Specifically, KVE-KD appoints the final pre-generation textual token as a unified semantic anchor and identifies the target cross-modal fusion layer by analyzing changes in the anchor representation through iterative visual-token contribution removal. Within this layer, KVE-KD ranks visual tokens via the anchor-conditioned attention distribution and selects the most informative visual tokens as key visual evidence with normalized entropy. The key visual evidence subsequently guides focused visual feature distillation, making the student align closely with the teacher's task-relevant visual representations while suppressing irrelevant background information. Extensive experiments on six benchmarks demonstrate that KVE-KD outperforms state-of-the-art cross-modal distillation methods, with particularly pronounced gains on tasks requiring complex reasoning and fine-grained visual understanding. Importantly, these improvements are achieved without introducing any inference-time overhead. The source code is available at https://github.com/zhangjianbin07/KVE-KD.

Uncertainty-Aware Knowledge Distillation for Multimodal Large Language Models

Knowledge distillation establishes a learning paradigm that leverages both data supervision and teacher guidance. However, determining the optimal balance between learning from data and learning from the teacher is challenging, as some samples may be noisy while others are subject to teacher uncertainty. This motivates the need for adaptively balancing data and teacher supervision. We propose Beta-weighted Knowledge Distillation (Beta-KD), an uncertainty-aware distillation framework that adaptively modulates how much the student relies on teacher guidance. Specifically, we formulate teacher--student learning from a unified Bayesian perspective and interpret teacher supervision as a Gibbs prior over student activations. This yields a closed-form, uncertainty-aware weighting mechanism and supports arbitrary distillation objectives and their combinations. Extensive experiments on multimodal VQA benchmarks demonstrate that distilling student Vision-Language Models from a large teacher VLM consistently improves performance. The results show that Beta-KD outperforms existing knowledge distillation methods. The code is available at https://github.com/Jingchensun/beta-kd.

Single-Teacher View Augmentation: Enhancing Knowledge Distillation with Student-Guided Perturbations

Knowledge distillation (KD) typically relies on the fixed perspective of a single teacher, limiting the diversity of supervisory signals. While multi-teacher distillation addresses this by aggregating knowledge from multiple models, it incurs prohibitive computational and storage costs. To balance efficiency and diversity, recent research has focused on generating virtual views from a single teacher. However, existing methods face a trade-off: random perturbation approaches offer efficiency but lack controlled diversity, while structured augmentation methods require multi-stage training and incur linear parameter growth. We observe that this trade-off stems from a common design choice: using the teacher's strong but static features to generate views. Instead, we propose Shift-Augmented Knowledge Distillation (SAKD), a simple yet effective framework that leverages the student's evolving features as a dynamic condition for perturbation generation. This shift in perspective enables single-stage training while producing adaptive, diverse views through a parameter-free cyclic shift. Extensive experiments on CIFAR-100 and ImageNet demonstrate that SAKD consistently outperforms random perturbation methods and achieves accuracy on par with two-stage approaches, while using significantly fewer parameters and eliminating pre-training requirements.
