Uncertainty-Aware Knowledge Distillation
Overview
This field studies how to transfer a large model’s knowledge to a smaller one while accounting for uncertainty in the teacher’s advice, the student’s predictions, or both. Methods include entropy- and confidence-weighted losses, selective filtering or intervention, Bayesian and evidential outputs, and adaptive forward- or reverse-KL objectives. They are used in settings such as language-model reasoning and agents, multimodal question answering, vision, and forecasting, where teacher guidance can improve capability without the cost of deploying the teacher. A central tension is deciding when uncertain predictions contain useful learning signals and when they reflect unreliable supervision, while balancing accuracy, calibration, diversity, and training cost.
