Abstract

Achieving globally optimal point cloud registration under partial overlaps and large misalignments remains a fundamental challenge. While simultaneous transformation (θ\boldsymbolθ) and correspondence (P\mathbf{P}) estimation has the advantage of being robust to nonrigid deformation, its non-convex coupled objective often leads to local minima for heuristic methods and prohibitive convergence times for existing global solvers due to loose lower bounds. To address this, we propose DC-Reg, a robust globally optimal framework that significantly tightens the Branch-and-Bound (BnB) search. Our core innovation is the derivation of a holistic concave underestimator for the coupled transformation-assignment objective, grounded in the Difference of Convex (DC) programming paradigm. Unlike prior works that rely on term-wise relaxations (e.g., McCormick envelopes) which neglect variable interplay, our holistic DC decomposition captures the joint structural interaction between θ\boldsymbolθ and P\mathbf{P}. This formulation enables the computation of remarkably tight lower bounds via efficient Linear Assignment Problems (LAP) evaluated at the vertices of the search boxes. We validate our framework on 2D similarity and 3D rigid registration, utilizing rotation-invariant features for the latter to achieve high efficiency without sacrificing optimality. Experimental results on synthetic data and the 3DMatch benchmark demonstrate that DC-Reg achieves significantly faster convergence and superior robustness to extreme noise and outliers compared to state-of-the-art global techniques.

Sinkhorn-CPD: Robust point cloud registration via unbalanced entropic optimal transport

Coherent Point Drift (CPD) is widely used for rigid point cloud registration because of its soft correspondences and closed-form parameter updates. However, CPD's target-side marginal constraint forces every observation, including outliers, to receive exactly unit probability mass. This assumption degrades registration accuracy under heavy outliers and partial overlap. Optimal transport (OT) methods can handle missing mass through unbalanced formulations, but require hand-tuned annealing schedules. In this paper, we propose Sinkhorn-CPD, which replaces CPD's target-side marginal constraint with dual Kullback-Leibler penalties, allowing the algorithm to discard outliers on both sides. The resulting formulation is a fully unbalanced entropic optimal transport problem, which can be efficiently solved by generalized Sinkhorn iterations. Moreover, Sinkhorn-CPD preserves the closed-form Procrustes and variance updates of CPD. In our method, the variance sigma^2 plays the role of the entropic regularization parameter, which induces an automatic annealing schedule from diffuse to sharp correspondences without manual temperature tuning. Experiments on synthetic, cross-category, and scan-to-CAD benchmarks show that Sinkhorn-CPD achieves state-of-the-art accuracy, with strong robustness to outliers and partial overlap.

PARTE: Plane-Assisted Robust Transformation Estimation for Point Cloud Registration

Global point-cloud registration remains challenging when limited overlap, repetitive geometry, and sensor noise produce correspondence sets dominated by outliers. Planar regions are particularly difficult for conventional point descriptors and are therefore often suppressed or discarded before matching. We present PARTE (Plane-Assisted Robust Transformation Estimation), a global registration method that instead treats planar structure as complementary registration evidence. PARTE extracts planar patches and represents them using our novel Plane Context Histogram (PCH), a descriptor that encodes the geometry surrounding each patch, while a two-level matching procedure identifies reliable plane correspondences. Candidate point and plane correspondences are combined in a confidence-weighted compatibility graph for joint outlier rejection, followed by rigid transformation estimation. When no usable plane correspondences are available, PARTE naturally reduces to point-only registration. We evaluate PARTE on 8,097 registration pairs across six indoor and outdoor benchmarks spanning dense RGB-D and sparse LiDAR measurements. Evaluations show PARTE achieves the highest overall success rate against 13 standard and state-of-the-art methods while maintaining low runtime. Scalable and Differentiable Point-Cloud Registration Using Maximum Mean Discrepancy

We present MMD-Reg, a novel correspondence-free approach to point-cloud registration that is differentiable and has linear computational complexity in the number of points. We model registration as a nonlinear least-squares problem based on the Maximum Mean Discrepancy, approximated using random Fourier features. The resulting objective can be solved efficiently with standard methods such as Levenberg-Marquardt, and the solution is differentiable via the implicit function theorem. This allows MMD-Reg to be used as a differentiable optimization layer within end-to-end trainable models, supporting registration under challenging conditions such as poor initial alignment and partial overlap. We demonstrate this Neural MMD-Reg formulation by integrating the layer with a set transformer, training the resulting model in supervised and unsupervised settings, and comparing its performance against recent learning-based methods. We also evaluate standalone MMD-Reg, comparing its accuracy and scalability against widely used non-learning-based registration methods.
