Abstract

Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) have recently shown strong performance in visual understanding, yet they often lack temporal awareness, particularly in egocentric settings where reasoning depends on the correct ordering and evolution of events. This deficiency stems in part from training objectives that fail to explicitly reward temporal reasoning and instead rely on frame-level spatial shortcuts. To address this limitation, we propose Temporal Global Policy Optimization (TGPO), a reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards (RLVR) algorithm designed to incentivize temporal awareness in MLLMs. TGPO contrasts model outputs generated from temporally ordered versus shuffled video frames to derive calibrated, globally normalized reward signals that explicitly favor temporally coherent reasoning. Integrated with GRPO and GSPO, TGPO supports cold-start RL training and effectively suppresses spatial shortcut behaviors learned by existing MLLMs. Experiments across five egocentric video benchmarks demonstrate that TGPO consistently improves temporal grounding and causal coherence, outperforming prior RL-based video reasoning approaches. Our results suggest that TGPO offers a simple and scalable pathway toward temporally robust MLLMs for egocentric video understanding.

Temporal-Aware Reasoning Optimization for Video Temporal Grounding

Multi-modal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have achieved remarkable progress in video temporal grounding with reinforcement learning for generating reasoning paths. However, existing models often produce superficial reasoning, which offers limited guidance for precise temporal localization. This limitation stems from (1) inefficient random exploration and (2) reward functions that focus solely on the answer correctness while ignoring reasoning quality. To address these issues, we propose TaRO (Temporal-Aware Reasoning Optimization), a framework that explicitly enhances the model's ability of thinking with time. First, we introduce a Constructive Reasoning Exploration that leverages pre-generated dense captions to construct reasoning paths grounded in explicit visual cues and timestamps, enabling efficient exploration of high-quality time-aware reasoning. Second, to evaluate reasoning quality, we design a Temporal-Sensitivity Reward. High-quality reasoning should be anchored to specific events and timestamps. If the event boundary under thinking is disrupted, such reasoning should become invalid, leading to a drop in the logit of the reasoning path. We utilize this drop as a critique of reasoning quality. Finally, TaRO follows a progressive curriculum, which starts by utilizing this reward to select better constructed reasoning paths, and evolves to a free exploration phase where the model autonomously generates effective reasoning. Experiments demonstrate that TaRO achieves state-of-the-art performance on VTG benchmarks. Code is available at https://github.com/oceanflowlab/TaRO.

TimeThink: Reasoning with Time for Video LLMs

Video reasoning requires models to identify and verify temporally localized evidence within long video sequences. Recent Video Large Language Models (Video-LLMs) have shown promising reasoning abilities when aligned with reinforcement learning, yet existing approaches typically rely on outcome-based rewards that supervise only the final prediction. Such supervision provides limited guidance on how models should discover the relevant temporal evidence during intermediate reasoning. In this work, we propose TimeThink, a reinforcement learning framework that explicitly guides temporal evidence discovery in Video-LLMs. Our key idea is to treat temporal clue steps as the fundamental optimization primitive of video reasoning, where each reasoning step references a candidate time interval in the video. We introduce a step-wise temporal process reward that provides localized credit assignment for these clues and a joint process--outcome optimization objective that balances reasoning fidelity with task correctness. To enable scalable training, we construct TimeThink-RFT-20K, a dataset with automatically derived temporal evidence segments. Extensive experiments across video reasoning, temporal grounding, and general video understanding benchmarks show that TimeThink consistently improves both temporal localization and reasoning performance, achieving state-of-the-art results among open-source video RL models.

EgoVITA: Learning to Plan and Verify for Egocentric Video Reasoning

Egocentric video understanding requires procedural reasoning under partial observability and continuously shifting viewpoints. Current multimodal large language models (MLLMs) struggle with this setting, often generating plausible but visually inconsistent or weakly grounded responses. We introduce EgoVITA\textbf{EgoVITA}, a framework that decomposes egocentric video reasoning into a structured plan-then-verify\textit{plan-then-verify} process. The model first generates an egocentric plan\textbf{egocentric plan}: a causal sequence of anticipated actions from a first-person perspective. This plan is then evaluated by an exocentric verification\textbf{exocentric verification} stage that uses third-person reasoning over the same video to verify its spatiotemporal and logical consistency, without exocentric video input. This decomposition enables cross-perspective feedback without requiring paired ego-exo supervision. To train this reasoning process, we adopt Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO) with two dense reward signals: one that grounds anticipated actions in subsequent visual observations and another that reinforces consistent third-person verification. EgoVITA\textbf{EgoVITA} achieves state-of-the-art performance on egocentric reasoning benchmarks, outperforming Qwen2.5-VL-7B by +7.7\mathbf{+7.7} on EgoBlind and +4.4\mathbf{+4.4} on EgoOrient, while maintaining strong generalization on exocentric video tasks with only 52k52k training samples.
