Abstract

Multimodal story customization aims to generate coherent story flows conditioned on textual descriptions, reference identity images, and shot types. While recent progress in story generation has shown promising results, most approaches rely on text-only inputs. A few studies incorporate character identity cues (e.g., facial ID), but lack broader multimodal conditioning. In this work, we introduce VstoryGen, a multimodal framework that integrates descriptions with character and background references to enable customizable story generation. To enhance cinematic diversity, we introduce shot-type control via parameter-efficient prompt tuning on movie data, enabling the model to generate sequences that more faithfully reflect cinematic grammar. To evaluate our framework, we establish two new benchmarks that assess multimodal story customization from the perspectives of character and scene consistency, text-visual alignment, and shot-type control. Experiments demonstrate that VstoryGen achieves improved consistency and cinematic diversity compared to existing methods.

DreamShot: Personalized Storyboard Synthesis with Video Diffusion Prior

Storyboard synthesis plays a crucial role in visual storytelling, aiming to generate coherent shot sequences that visually narrate cinematic events with consistent characters, scenes, and transitions. However, existing approaches are mostly adapted from text-to-image diffusion models, which struggle to maintain long-range temporal coherence, consistent character identities, and narrative flow across multiple shots. In this paper, we introduce DreamShot, a video generative model based storyboard framework that fully exploits powerful video diffusion priors for controllable multi-shot synthesis. DreamShot supports both Text-to-Shot and Reference-to-Shot generation, as well as story continuation conditioned on previous frames, enabling flexible and context-aware storyboard generation. By leveraging the spatial-temporal consistency inherent in video generative models, DreamShot produces visually and semantically coherent sequences with improved narrative fidelity and character continuity. Furthermore, DreamShot incorporates a multi-reference role conditioning module that accepts multiple character reference images and enforces identity alignment via a Role-Attention Consistency Loss, explicitly constraining attention between reference and generated roles. Extensive experiments demonstrate that DreamShot achieves superior scene coherence, role consistency, and generation efficiency compared to state-of-the-art text-to-image storyboard models, establishing a new direction toward controllable video model-driven visual storytelling.

Towards Customized Multimodal Role-Play

Unified multimodal understanding and generation models enable richer human-AI interaction. Yet jointly customizing a character's persona, dialogue style, and visual identity while maintaining output consistency across modalities remains largely unexplored. To mitigate this gap, we introduce a new task, Customized Multimodal Role-Play (CMRP). We construct the RoleScape-20 dataset comprising 20 characters, including training and evaluation data that cover persona, stylistic descriptions, visual/expressive cues, and text-image interactions. Building on a unified model, we devise UniCharacter, a two-stage training framework containing Unified Supervised Finetuning (Unified-SFT) and character-specific group relative policy optimization (Character-GRPO). Given only 10 images plus corresponding interaction examples, the model acquires the target character and exhibits coherent persona, style, and visual identity in both generated text and images. This process takes about 100 GPU hours. Experiments on the RoleScape-20 dataset show that the proposed method substantially outperforms prior approaches. Ablation studies further validate the effectiveness of our cross-modal consistency design and few-shot customization strategy. We argue that CMRP, coupled with unified modeling, provides a basis for next-generation characterful and immersive interactive agents.

FreeStory: Training-Free Character Consistency for Free-Form Visual Storytelling

Visual storytelling aims to generate image sequences that are both aligned with narrative prompts and consistent in character appearance across images. Recent training-free methods improve character consistency by reusing attention features, but rely on structured prompts where full character descriptions are repeated in every prompt. This assumption simplifies the task but deviates from natural storytelling, where characters are typically introduced once and later referred to using pronouns or type-based expressions. We propose FreeStory, a training-free framework that reformulates character consistency under free-form prompts as entity-grounded feature reuse. Our method associates reference mentions with their corresponding character descriptions and combines dynamic character masks, correspondence-aware feature matching, key-value injection, and query blending to preserve identity while retaining generation diversity. We also introduce FreeStoryBench, a benchmark for this setting that includes both single- and multi-character stories. Experiments show that FreeStory achieves state-of-the-art performance among training-free methods on structured benchmarks and stronger overall consistency over baselines under free-form prompts.
