Abstract

As wireless communication systems become more advanced, Open Radio Access Networks (O-RAN) stand out as a notable framework that promotes interoperability and cost-effectiveness. An examination of the progression of RAN architectures, as well as O-RAN's underlying principles, reveals the importance of machine learning (ML) in addressing various challenges, including spectrum management, resource allocation, and security. Hence, this survey provides a comprehensive overview of the integration of ML within O-RAN, highlighting its transformative potential in enhancing network performance and efficiency. This survey aims to describe the current status of ML applications in O-RAN while indicating possible directions for future research by analyzing existing literature. The findings aim to assist researchers and stakeholders in formulating optimal service strategies and advancing the understanding of intelligent wireless networks.

Machine Learning for Underwater Optical Wireless Communication Systems: A Comprehensive Survey

Underwater Optical Wireless Communication (UOWC) has emerged as a promising technology for high-speed underwater data transmission, offering significantly higher bandwidth and lower latency compared to acoustic and Radio Frequency (RF) technologies. However, the underwater medium introduces severe impairments that degrade link performance and limit communication range. The growing complexity of these challenges has increased research interest in Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) approaches, which offer powerful tools for channel modeling, signal processing, and system adaptation in ways that conventional analytical methods struggle to achieve. This survey provides a comprehensive review of ML methods applied across the full UOWC system pipeline, covering channel modeling, transmitter design, receiver detection and equalization, link alignment, and emerging applications, including wireless power transfer, semantic communication, object detection, optical sensing, and localization. Finally, we discuss open challenges and future research directions to motivate further work in this rapidly growing field.

Advanced AI Service Provisioning in O-RAN through LLM Engine Integration

The Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) architecture allows AI to be embedded directly into the RAN through modular xApps and rApps, yet creating these applications collecting data, training models, writing code, and deploying them safely remains slow and largely manual. Large Language Models (LLMs) offer strong reasoning and code-generation capabilities but are unsuited for the fast, deterministic inference required in real-time RAN control. We present a proof-of-concept Dual-Brain architecture that combines both strengths: an LLM-based orchestrator translates operator intents into data-collection policies and deployment code, while an automated ML engine, NeuralSmith, trains lightweight classifiers on demand via an API. We describe the architecture and provisioning workflow, share practical insights from a containerized O-RAN 5G~SA testbed, and discuss open research directions.

RISC-V and machine learning: a survey

The intersection of open-source processor architectures and machine learning is driving the demand for customizable, efficient, and accessible hardware. This survey examines the state of the RISC-V ISA in machine learning applications, analyzing current capabilities, challenges, and future directions based on recent research. The analysis covers academic and commercial implementations, software frameworks, and real-world applications. The RISC-V machine learning ecosystem is evaluated, from instruction set extensions and core implementations to compiler optimizations and deployment strategies. Key contributions include a unified taxonomy of RISC-V ML implementations, a comparative analysis of performance and design trade-offs, an evaluation of software toolchain maturity, and the identification of emerging trends in instruction set extensions and specialized accelerators. Findings reveal progress in energy efficiency, specialized instruction development, and framework integration, while highlighting challenges in standardization, verification complexity, and ecosystem fragmentation. The analysis proposes four research directions to address current limitations: specialized neural processing extensions, adaptive and modular processor architectures, security frameworks, and energy-efficient multi-domain architectures. These directions provide a roadmap for advancing RISC-V as a foundational platform for next-generation machine learning systems.
