Abstract

Designing visually diverse and high-quality designs remains a manual, time-consuming process, limiting scalability and personalization in creative workflows. We present a system for generating editable design variations using a decoder-only language model, the Creative Pre-trained Transformer (CPT), trained to predict visual style attributes in design templates. At the core of our approach is a new representation called Creative Markup Language (CML), a compact, machine-learning-friendly format that captures canvas-level structure, page layout, and element-level details (text, images, and vector graphics), including both content and style. We fine-tune CPT on a large corpus of design templates authored by professional designers, enabling it to learn meaningful, context-aware predictions for attributes such as color schemes and font choices. The model produces semantically structured and stylistically coherent outputs, preserving internal consistency across elements. Unlike generative image models, our system yields fully editable design documents rather than pixel-only images, allowing users to iterate and personalize within a design editor. In experiments, our approach generates contextual color and font variations for existing templates and shows promise in adjusting layouts while maintaining design principles.

Editable Visual Design

While diffusion base models such as GPT-Image-2 and Nano-Banana exhibit remarkable visual expressiveness, their end-to-end generation inherently yields flattened bitmaps with error-prone text, precluding layer-wise post-editing. Conversely, code-based visual generation via Coding Agents provides precise layout control and decoupled layers, yet remains constrained by a lack of global aesthetic intuition and the difficulty of coding complex visual assets. To address this, we propose Editable Visual Design, a new paradigm driven by a Coding Agent. We designate the VLM as the creative brain'' for requirement comprehension, task planning, and aesthetic judgment, while utilizing the image generation model as an on-demand visual world simulator'' to synthesize standalone visual assets. Operating under an ``imagine first, then act'' closed-loop workflow, the agent generates isolated assets, writes native HTML/CSS, and iteratively refines the design against visual rendering feedback. Furthermore, Agent Design Replay faithfully reproduces the creative and reasoning trajectory akin to that of professional human designers. Ultimately, the system delivers editable artifacts with decoupled layers and real text, enabling users to perform intuitive mouse dragging and layout adjustments on a graphical user interface. Validations on posters, infographics, and other scenarios show that this paradigm successfully achieves both refined aesthetics and production-grade editability.

StructuredEdit: Constraint-Aware Graphic Design Editing via Differentiable Parameter Propagation

Graphic design editing requires precise manipulation of typography, layout, and visual hierarchy under strict design constraints. Following the introduction of large language models, organizations have increasingly promoted vision-language models to enhance productivity. However, current models operate on pixels and achieve only 52% constraint satisfaction on structured design edits, thereby limiting their reliability for professional workflows. We present StructuredEdit, a pipeline that reframes design editing as parameter manipulation rather than pixel generation. Our core technical contribution is Differentiable Parameter Propagation (DPP), a training method that embeds hard design constraints into vision-language model fine-tuning by backpropagating pixel-level constraint violations through a lightweight differentiable rasterizer. A hybrid candidate-and-filter pipeline produces 125k validated edit triplets. The resulting system reaches 89% constraint satisfaction versus 52% for GPT-4V, 0.82 matched-element Intersection over Union, and 76% top-1 font accuracy over the 100 most-frequent design typefaces. In a user study (N=35), editing time drops 33% and correction iterations drop 44% relative to a GPT-4V baseline.

PLAYGROUND: Progressive Layout Generation with Render-Grounded Planning

Generating editable graphic designs requires arranging visual and textual elements into a coherent composition while preserving their content and editability. Although recent MLLM-based approaches employ iterative generation and visual refinement to reflect the real-world design workflows, their high-level plans are predetermined prior to execution, limiting their adaptability as the design evolves. To address this limitation, we propose PlayGround, a progressive layout generation framework that dynamically adapts to the current rendered canvas. PlayGround establishes a progressive design loop comprising a Progressive Planner, a Layout Generator, and a Visual Verifier, guided by a Structure-Aware Retriever. Given an initial set of unordered elements, the Structure-Aware Retriever initially infers a coarse layout structure to retrieve structurally similar reference designs. Subsequently, at each turn, the Progressive Planner examines the current rendered canvas alongside the remaining elements, forms the next functional group, and plans its composition. The Layout Generator then predicts editable layout attributes, while the Visual Verifier evaluates rendered candidates and provides feedback when refinement is necessary. To train the Progressive Planner with step-wise supervision, we construct a two-stage data generation pipeline that extracts functional groups and turn-level planning trajectories from completed designs. Experiments on Crello and LICA demonstrate the effectiveness of PlayGround over existing methods. Our code and weights will be publicly released.
