Abstract

Graphic design creation involves harmoniously assembling multimodal components such as images, text, logos, and other visual assets collected from diverse sources, into a visually-appealing and cohesive design. Recent methods have largely focused on layout prediction or complementary element generation, while retaining input elements exactly, implicitly assuming that provided components are already stylistically harmonious. In practice, inputs often come from disparate sources and exhibit visual mismatch, making this assumption limiting. We argue that identity-preserving stylization and compositing of input elements is a critical missing ingredient for truly harmonized components-to-design pipelines. To this end, we propose GIST, a training-free, identity-preserving image compositor that sits between layout prediction and typography generation, and can be plugged into any existing components-to-design or design-refining pipeline without modification. We demonstrate this by integrating GIST with two substantially different existing methods, LaDeCo and Design-o-meter. GIST shows significant improvements in visual harmony and aesthetic quality across both pipelines, as validated by LLaVA-OV and GPT-4V on aspect-wise ratings and pairwise preference over naive pasting. Learning Interaction between Image and Layout Priors for Joint Image-Layout Generation in Design Templates

In this paper, we address the problem of graphic design template creation, which generates a background image and a layout of foreground elements over the background to form a harmonious composition from an input text. Prior work on graphic design generation mostly adopts a sequential paradigm, where design elements are generated sequentially. We argue that such a sequential scheme falls short of faithfully capturing the dependency between the background and layout (and thus the joint image-layout distribution), which limits the quality of generated design templates. To overcome this limitation, we propose a model, InterIL, which jointly generates the two modalities, background image and layout, in a single generative process. The novel design of our joint model connects the backbones of pretrained image and layout diffusion models with a learnable communication module to explicitly model bidirectional image-layout interaction. During training, the image and layout backbones are frozen to maintain and leverage the vast pretrained single-modality prior knowledge, while only the communication module is updated, so that the model can focus on learning image-layout interaction and thereby better capture the joint image-layout distribution for improved composition harmony. Our model has no design-specific inductive bias, which allows it to better preserve the original characteristics of realistic designs. We further introduce a test-time guidance strategy to enable users to impose their specific preferences on generated results. Our experiments show that, compared with prior approaches, our model can generate significantly better results in terms of image, layout and image-layout harmonization, producing outputs closer to real samples. We also demonstrate the flexibility of our model in enforcing user preferences at inference without retraining.

COMPASS: Grounding Composition-Intent Guidance in Unified Multimodal Models

Composition is a high-level visual intent that governs where subjects are placed and how a scene is organized, yet current unified multimodal models remain unreliable at fine-grained composition recognition and struggle to turn such intent into controllable generation. We present COMPASS, the first unified multimodal framework that grounds composition-intent control in a single system spanning both composition perception and composition-guided generation, with a shared expert token τcτ_c as the central intent anchor. On the perception side, COMPASS injects composition expertise into an MoE backbone in a minimally invasive manner and distills the inferred intent into τcτ_c. On the generation side, COMPASS reuses τcτ_c as a global conditioning signal that steers the denoising trajectory, effectively converting passive composition analysis into explicit layout control. To support systematic instruction-following composition learning and evaluation at scale, we construct Comp-11, a large-scale dataset with an 11-class taxonomy and reasoning-augmented annotations. Extensive experiments show that COMPASS substantially improves category-level composition understanding and delivers more composition-consistent, prompt-faithful generation than strong baselines.

StyleComposer: Training-Free Multi-Reference Style Composition

The style of a painting is not monolithic: color, texture, and structure may come from different sources. Existing reference-guided methods transfer them as one style signal, leaving each attribute's source and strength outside the user's control. We ask where in a diffusion model one attribute can change while the others hold, and find that no single representation isolates all three. The proposed StyleComposer therefore routes each style attribute through the representation where it separates best and coordinates the routes over denoising time. Without training or inversion, it satisfies three references and the prompt jointly more closely than prior methods, and exposes one strength slider per attribute.
