Abstract

Large language models (LLMs) are now deployed worldwide, inspiring a surge of benchmarks that measure their multilingual and multicultural abilities. However, these benchmarks prioritize generic language understanding or superficial cultural trivia, leaving the evaluation of grounded tasks -- where models must reason within real-world, context-rich scenarios -- largely unaddressed. To fill this gap, we present CulturALL, a comprehensive and challenging benchmark to assess LLMs' multilingual and multicultural competence on grounded tasks. CulturALL is built via a human--AI collaborative framework: expert annotators ensure appropriate difficulty and factual accuracy, while LLMs lighten the manual workload. By incorporating diverse sources, CulturALL ensures comprehensive scenario coverage. Each item is carefully designed to present a high level of difficulty, making CulturALL challenging. CulturALL contains 2,610 samples in 14 languages from 51 regions, distributed across 16 topics to capture the full breadth of grounded tasks. Experiments show that the best LLM achieves 44.48% accuracy on CulturALL, underscoring substantial room for improvement.

The GaoYao Benchmark: A Comprehensive Framework for Evaluating Multilingual and Multicultural Abilities of Large Language Models

Evaluating the multilingual and multicultural capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) is essential for their global utility. However, current benchmarks face three critical limitations: (1) fragmented evaluation dimensions that often neglect deep cultural nuances; (2) insufficient language coverage in subjective tasks relying on low-quality machine translation; and (3) shallow analysis that lacks diagnostic depth beyond simple rankings. To address these, we introduce GaoYao, a comprehensive benchmark with 182.3k samples, 26 languages and 51 nations/areas. First, GaoYao proposes a unified framework categorizing evaluation tasks into three cultural layers (General Multilingual, Cross-cultural, Monocultural) and nine cognitive sub-layers. Second, we achieve native-quality expansion by leveraging experts to rigorously localize subjective benchmarks into 19 languages and synthesizing cross-cultural test sets for 34 cultures, surpassing prior coverage by up to 111%. Third, we conduct an in-depth diagnostic analysis on 20+ flagship and compact LLMs. Our findings reveal significant geographical performance disparities and distinct gaps between tasks, offering a reliable map for future work. We release the benchmark (https://github.com/lunyiliu/GaoYao).

SemEval-2026 Task 7: Everyday Knowledge Across Diverse Languages and Cultures

We present our shared task on evaluating the adaptability of LLMs and NLP systems across multiple languages and cultures. The task data consist of an extended version of our manually constructed BLEnD benchmark (Myung et al. 2024), covering more than 30 language-culture pairs, predominantly representing low-resource languages spoken across multiple continents. As the task is designed strictly for evaluation, participants were not permitted to use the data for training, fine-tuning, few-shot learning, or any other form of model modification. Our task includes two tracks: (a) Short-Answer Questions (SAQ) and (b) Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQ). Participants were required to predict labels and were allowed to submit any NLP system and adopt diverse modelling strategies, provided that the benchmark was used solely for evaluation. The task attracted more than 140 registered participants, and we received final submissions from 62 teams, along with 19 system description papers. We report the results and present an analysis of the best-performing systems and the most commonly adopted approaches. Furthermore, we discuss shared insights into open questions and challenges related to evaluation, misalignment, and methodological perspectives on model behaviour in low-resource languages and for under-represented cultures.

BavGround: A Benchmark for Regional Cultural Grounding and Dialect Competence in Bavarian

Cultural evaluation of large language models (LLMs) often focuses on high-resource standard languages, leaving regional culture and dialect communities underrepresented. We introduce BavGround, a benchmark for evaluating Bavarian regional cultural grounding and dialect competence across English, German and Bavarian. BavGround contains 206 multiple-choice source questions across eight cultural domains per language, yielding 618 multi-parallel instances, with items covering both broadly accessible cultural knowledge and source-grounded regional knowledge from journalism, historical sources, and specialist literature. We evaluate fifteen 7B-10B open-weight instruction-tuned models and one closed-model reference. Strong multilingual models perform best overall, but performance drops on Bavarian items and source-grounded questions, indicating persistent difficulty with dialectal and localized cultural knowledge. We further show that conclusions depend strongly on evaluation protocol: raw answer-letter scoring, shuffled-letter scoring, option-text likelihood, generated-answer parsing, and semantic matching can produce different absolute scores and rankings, especially for regionally adapted models. Finally, an exploratory analysis of GENBA-10B checkpoints suggests that continued pretraining improves answer-content likelihood unevenly across domains, while dialect competence remains comparatively weak. BavGround supports localized, protocol-aware evaluation of cultural representation in LLMs.
