The "Small World of Words" German Free-Association Norms

Abstract

Free-association norms provide essential empirical data for investigating linguistic, semantic, and cultural phenomena in the cognitive sciences. Although large-scale norms exist for languages such as English, Dutch, Spanish, and Mandarin Chinese, no comparable resource has been available for German. To address this gap, we present free-association norms for 5,877 German cue words as part of the German version of the multilingual Small World of Words (SWOW) project. We describe the data collection procedures, participant characteristics, and our comprehensive preprocessing pipeline before introducing the resulting SWOW-DE data set. Using data from three established psycholinguistic paradigms, we show that SWOW-DE norms robustly predict performance in lexical decision tasks, relatedness judgments, and psycholinguistic word ratings. Furthermore, we demonstrate that SWOW-DE responses compare favorably with existing German resources and provide a preliminary cross-linguistic comparison revealing both shared and language-specific association patterns, highlighting promising directions for future research. Overall, SWOW-DE represents the largest collection of German free associations to date and offers a unique resource for linguistic, psychological, and cross-cultural research.

Swap distance minimization shapes the order of subject, object and verb in languages of the world

Languages of the world vary concerning the order of subject, object and verb. The most frequent dominant orders are SOV and SVO, and researchers have tailored models to this fact. However, there are still languages whose dominant order does not conform to these expectations or even lack a dominant order. Here we show that across linguistic families and macroareas, word order variation within languages is shaped by the principle of swap distance minimization even when the dominant order is not SOV/SVO and even when a dominant order is lacking.

Supervised Semantic Differential for Cross-Cultural Concept Analysis: A Case Study of Human Affect

Cross-cultural comparison of psychological meaning requires methods that go beyond word-level translation and examine how semantic dimensions are organized across languages. We introduce a cross-lingual extension of the Supervised Semantic Differential (SSD), which estimates supervised semantic gradients in embedding space and compares them across aligned multilingual word embeddings. The method tests gradient alignment and difference using permutation procedures and bootstrap intervals, and interprets residual differences through clustering around the difference gradient. We demonstrate the approach on Polish, English, and French affective norm lexicons, modeling Valence, Arousal, and Dominance where available. Affective dimensions were significantly recoverable across languages and model settings. Cross-lingual comparisons showed broad alignment together with structured residual differences: Valence appeared mostly shared, whereas Arousal and Dominance produced more interpretable contrasts involving bodily threat, aesthetic stimulation, internal emotionality, macro-level authority, and everyday control. Several clusters also reflected corpus-specific artifacts, underscoring the need for cautious interpretation. Cross-lingual SSD offers an explainable framework for testing semantic alignment, identifying divergence, and generating hypotheses about cross-cultural differences in psychological meaning.

GRUFF: LLM Pronoun Fidelity, Reasoning, and Biases in German

Third-person singular pronouns have long been used to study stereotypical biases in language models and to test their abilities to reason about reference. More recently, the interplay between reasoning and bias has been investigated with the task of pronoun fidelity, which assesses models' abilities to correctly reuse a previously-specified pronoun for a discourse entity, independent of other potentially distracting discourse entities mentioned in between. However, such research focuses on English, which is a language with limited grammatical gender and almost no gender agreement. In this paper we contribute a novel, large-scale dataset, GRUFF, to measure pronoun fidelity in German, covering four different gender agreement systems in nouns, and four sets of pronouns. With this dataset, we show that LLMs show strong grammatical agreement for masculine and feminine entities in the absence of explicit context, but not for neopronouns xier and en. Models are generally not robust to distractors, but encoder-only models are more robust in German than in English, reflecting the importance of grammatical gender. Finally, we show that occupational stereotypes in this context are poorly correlated across grammatical cases, and across most models, except ones with closely related architectures. We release all code and data to encourage further work on gender-inclusive language and referential reasoning in German.
