Abstract

Micro-actions are subtle, localized movements lasting 1-3 seconds such as scratching one's head or tapping fingers. Such subtle actions are essential for social communication, ubiquitously used in natural interactions, and thus critical for fine-grained video understanding, yet remain poorly understood by current computer vision systems. We identify a fundamental challenge: micro-actions exhibit diverse spatio-temporal characteristics where some are defined by spatial configurations while others manifest through temporal dynamics. Existing methods that commit to a single spatio-temporal decomposition cannot accommodate this diversity. We propose a dual-path network that processes anatomically-grounded spatial entities through parallel Spatial-Temporal (ST) and Temporal-Spatial (TS) pathways. The ST path captures spatial configurations before modeling temporal dynamics, while the TS path inverts this order to prioritize temporal dynamics. Rather than fixed fusion, we introduce entity-level adaptive routing where each body part learns its optimal processing preference, complemented by Mutual Action Consistency (MAC) loss that enforces cross-path coherence. Extensive experiments demonstrate competitive performance on MA-52 dataset and state-of-the-art results on iMiGUE dataset. Our work reveals that architectural adaptation to the inherent complexity of micro-actions is essential for advancing fine-grained video understanding.

SoftRerank: Hierarchical Soft Fusion with Candidate-Label Reranking for Long-Tailed Micro-Action Recognition

Micro-actions are subtle, low-intensity non-verbal behaviors that provide cues to fine-grained human states, including emotions and intentions. Recognizing them remains difficult because they are brief, contain weak visual changes, and often exhibit similar motion patterns across categories. This paper addresses these challenges with a fine-grained micro-action recognition method that combines full fine-tuning of InternVideo2.5, hierarchical soft fusion, and a lightweight candidate-label reranker. For the long-tailed label distribution in MA-52, we use class-balanced sampling and inverse-frequency reweighting to reduce the effect of frequent classes during training. We fine-tune InternVideo2.5 end to end and attach coarse and group-conditional fine-grained classification heads to the shared video representation, improving the consistency between coarse and fine predictions. For ambiguous samples, the candidate-label reranker uses hard samples and video-label matching to focus on easily confused fine-grained actions. Experiments validate the proposed method, which achieves a 79.99% F1-mean on MA-52 and ranks first in the 3rd Micro-Action Analysis Grand Challenge at ACM Multimedia 2026.

STAG: Spatio-temporal Evolving Structural Representation of Action Units for Micro-expression Recognition

Micro-expression recognition is challenging due to subtle and short-lived facial muscle movements. Existing methods rely heavily on apex-onset frames, overlook fine-grained inter-frame dynamics, and separately model spatial and temporal information, limiting generalization across datasets. To address these challenges, we propose STAG, a dynamic ROI-AU-coupled spatial-temporal network that jointly models motion flow and adaptive facial connectivity. The framework extracts optical flow from discriminative frames using magnitude-based selection and temporal attention. A dual-branch architecture combines an enhanced graph attention network for structured spatial reasoning with a transformer encoder for temporal modeling. A bidirectional cross-attention module enables mutual refinement of spatial and temporal features, while AU-guided dynamic connectivity adapts facial region interactions according to muscle activation patterns. The transformer captures subtle temporal dynamics beyond apex-based approaches, improving semantic consistency and interpretability for explainable micro-expression recognition. The fused representation is optimized using focal loss and evaluated on CASME II, 4DME, DFME, NaME, SAMM, and SMIC-HS. Extensive experiments demonstrate improved robustness, generalization, interpretability, and computational efficiency, confirming the effectiveness of adaptive relational reasoning, AU-guided dynamic connectivity, and deep spatial-temporal feature fusion for accurate cross-dataset micro-expression recognition.

Spatial-Temporal Decoupled Adapter for Micro-gesture Online Recognition

Micro-gesture online recognition aims to temporally localize and classify subtle gestures in untrimmed videos. Owing to their extremely short duration, low motion amplitude, and ambiguous visual cues, capturing discriminative spatiotemporal representations remains highly challenging. Existing parameter-efficient adapters typically employ a single branch to model spatial and temporal cues jointly, which may fail to capture the fine-grained patterns of micro-gestures. To address this limitation, we propose a Spatial-Temporal Decoupled Adapter that decomposes video adaptation into independent temporal and spatial branches via lightweight depthwise convolutions. In addition, to address the long-tail distribution problem in the benchmark dataset, we introduce Adaptive Soft Balanced Augmentation, which dynamically allocates augmentation intensity based on class rarity and learning difficulty, without manual thresholds. Our method achieves an F1 score of 0.43808, ranking 1st in Track 2 of the 4th EI-MiGA-IJCAI Challenge.
