Recognition Without Authorization: LLMs and the Moral Order of Online Advice

Abstract

Large language models are increasingly used to mediate everyday interpersonal dilemmas, yet how their advisory defaults interact with the concentrated moral orders of specific communities remains poorly understood. This article compares four assistant-style LLMs with community-endorsed advice on 11,565 posts from r/relationship_advice, using the subreddit as a concentrated, vote-ratified moral formation whose prescriptive clarity makes divergence measurable. Across models, LLMs identify many of the same dynamics as human commenters, but are markedly less likely to convert that recognition into directive authorization for action. The gap is sharpest where community consensus is strongest: on high-consensus posts involving abuse or safety threats, models recommend exit at roughly half the human rate while maintaining elevated levels of hedging, validation, and therapeutic framing. The article describes this pattern as recognition without authorization: the capacity to register harm while withholding socially ratified permission for consequential action. This divergence is not incidental but structural: a portable advisory style that remains validating, risk-averse, and weakly directive across contexts. Safety alignment is one plausible contributor to this pattern, alongside training-data averaging and broader assistant design. The article argues that model divergence can be reframed from a technical error to a way of seeing what standardized assistant norms flatten when they encounter situated moral worlds.

Right or Wrong, Models Comply: Directional Blindness in LLM Moral Judgment

As language models take integrated roles across many domains, the response of LLMs to user pushback becomes a critical alignment property. Yet many existing evaluations treat compliance as unidirectional, measuring whether models resist pressure but not whether they resist it selectively. We introduce Compliance Asymmetry (A = BCR/HCR), a bidirectional diagnostic that compares beneficial output change under helpful nudges with harmful change under misleading nudges. Across 9 models and 972,000 nudge-condition responses, we find that this selectivity differs in factual and moral judgments: models follow helpful nudges more than harmful ones on factual questions (A = 1.58), but follow both directions at nearly identical rates on moral questions (A = 1.04). This phenomenon persists across model families, capability levels, and nudging types. Interestingly, we also find that chain-of-thought prompting amplifies helpful and harmful compliance together, while identity-based prompting suppresses both by nearly identical margins. These results identify direction-blind moral compliance as a distinct failure mode in current LLMs and suggest that alignment should target directionally calibrated updating rather than lower compliance alone.

The Refusal--Compliance Tradeoff: A Large-Scale Safety Behavior Audit of Large Language Models

Refusal rates are a poor proxy for LLM safety, i.e., a model may over-refuse benign prompts while still complying with harmful ones. We audit both failure modes across 21 open-weight LLMs on four safety benchmarks (OR-Bench, XSTest, ToxiGen, BOLD), using a composition adjustment to isolate model sensitivity from dataset toxicity confounds. We report three findings. First, models adopt fundamentally different calibration strategies: conservative ecosystems such as Llama suppress unsafe outputs at the cost of elevated over-refusals, while permissive ecosystems such as DeepSeek and Qwen preserve helpfulness but tolerate higher harmful compliance. Second, demographic protection is unequal: models over-protect prominent racial and religious groups, frequently refusing even benign prompts about them, while providing substantially weaker protection against disability-targeted attacks. Third, refusal and compliance tendencies are stable within model families across generations and scales, suggesting that post-training objectives shape safety behavior more than architecture. Our results call for joint, demographically-aware, and multi-judge safety evaluation.

You Shouldn't Have Asked: A Pragmatics-Inspired Taxonomy for Evaluating LLM Refusals

Refusals are often treated as face-threatening acts in pragmatics because they can challenge the requester's socially claimed self-image. Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly trained to refuse unsafe and inappropriate requests, and these refusals may harm users when models fail to manage this interactional cost properly. While existing work has mainly approached LLM non-compliance as a safety-alignment outcome, it does not provide a way to evaluate whether LLMs refuse appropriately across different harmful contexts. To study this question, we propose (to our knowledge) the first taxonomy of LLM refusals that is grounded in pragmatic theory. Applying this taxonomy to responses from 16 modern LLMs across 14 harm categories, we find that although models differ in how they refuse, their refusals are overall explicit and strongly morally evaluative, with interactional repair occurring mainly through offering or providing safer alternatives instead of interpersonal facework. This pattern is especially consequential in sensitive harm contexts, where overuse of negative framing may make users feel shamed or provoked, undermining the purpose of safe non-compliance. We therefore call for alignment evaluation that considers not only whether models refuse harmful requests, but also whether they refuse in ways that are contextually adaptive and socially accountable for the interactional consequences of saying no.
