Different Strokes for Different Folks: Writer Identification for Historical Arabic Manuscripts

Abstract

Handwritten Arabic manuscripts preserve the Arab world's intellectual and cultural heritage, and writer identification supports provenance, authenticity verification, and historical analysis. Using the Muharaf dataset of historical Arabic manuscripts, we evaluate writer identification from individual line images and, to the best of our knowledge, provide the first baselines reported under both line-level and page-disjoint evaluation protocols. Since the dataset is only partially labeled for writer identification, we manually verified and expanded writer labels in the public portion from 6,858 (28.00%) to 21,249 lines (86.75%) out of 24,495 line images, correcting inconsistencies and removing non-handwritten text. After further filtering, we retained 18,987 lines (77.51%). We propose a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based model with attention mechanisms for closed-set writer identification, including rare two-writer lines modeled as composite writer-pair classes. We benchmark fourteen configurations and conduct ablations across different feature extractors and training regimes. To assess generalization to unseen pages, the page-disjoint protocol assigns all lines from each page to a single split. Under the line-level protocol, a fine-tuned DenseNet201 with attention achieves 99.05% Top-1 accuracy, 99.73% Top-5 accuracy, and 97.44% F1-score. Under the more challenging page-disjoint protocol, the best observed results are 78.61% Top-1 accuracy, 87.79% Top-5 accuracy, and 66.55% F1-score, thus quantifying the impact of page-level cues. By expanding the Muharaf dataset's labeled subset and reporting both protocols, we provide a clearer benchmark and a practical resource for historians and linguists engaged with culturally and historically significant documents. TextileNet: Towards Zero-shot Text-style Segmentation of Manuscripts

Automatic writer identification systems have progressed remarkably in recent years, yet their deployment in archival paleography remains limited by the scarcity of labeled training data, open scribe sets, and degraded image quality. We present TextileNet, a fully convolutional multi-task network trained exclusively on synthetic data to produce dense pixel-level texture embeddings, which we transfer zeroshot to historical manuscript analysis. As an original contribution to evaluation methodology, we designed a paleographic visual quiz of 80 pair and triplet questions and administered it to a range from lay participants to senior paleographers under strict anonymity, establishing to our knowledge for the first time a human baseline for script-style discrimination on late medieval text. We employ TextileNet embeddings to perform zero-shot retrieval on sub-word granularity for hand and gender identification. Our experimental results help in building the credibility of TextileNet in the paleographic domain, but more than that demonstrate in experimental terms that the question of gender in handwriting needs to be treated with caution.

ICDAR 2026 Competition on Writer Identification and Pen Classification from Hand-Drawn Circles

This paper presents CircleID, a large-scale ICDAR 2026 competition on writer identification and pen classification from scanned hand-drawn circles. The primary objective is to investigate how biometric writer characteristics and physical pen features naturally entangle within minimal, static traces. CircleID comprises two distinct tasks: (1) open-set writer identification, requiring models to recognize known writers while explicitly rejecting unknown ones, and (2) cross-writer pen classification, evaluated across both seen and unseen writers. Participants were provided with a new, controlled dataset of 46,155 tightly cropped circle images, digitized at 400 DPI and annotated for writer identity and pen type. The dataset comprises samples from 44 known and 22 unknown writers using eight different pens. Hosted on Kaggle as two separate tracks with public and private leaderboards, the competition provided participants with a ResNet baseline. In total, 389 teams (436 participants) made 3,185 submissions for the pen classification task, and 113 teams (141 participants) made 1,737 submissions for the writer identification track. The best-performing private leaderboard submissions achieved a Top-1 accuracy of 64.801% for writer identification and 92.726% for pen classification. This paper details the dataset, evaluates the winning methodologies, and analyzes the impact of out-of-distribution writers on model generalization and feature disentanglement. In this large-scale competition, CircleID establishes a new baseline for minimal-trace analysis.

BullingerDB: A Dataset for Handwritten Text Recognition and Writer Retrieval

We present BullingerDB, a large-scale benchmark dataset for historical document analysis based on the correspondence of Heinrich Bullinger (1504-1575). The corpus comprises 20,898 pages and 499,222 text lines written by 796 writers over six decades, featuring stylistic variation, multilingual content (mostly Latin and Early New High German) as well as meta-information such as writer identity and time. We evaluate BullingerDB on text recognition and writer retrieval. TrOCR, the best performing model, achieves a CER of 9.1%. For writer retrieval, we introduce a temporal nDCG metric to assess time-aware retrieval. While temporally coherent retrieval is achievable, mAP (78.3%) scores indicate challenges due to long-term stylistic variation. With BullingerDB, we aim to establish a new benchmark for multilingual historical text recognition and temporally-aware writer analysis.
