Abstract

This work presents ROSA, a microring-based optical neural network architecture that improves robustness and energy efficiency using an optical shift-and-add (OSA) module and a layer-wise hybrid mapping strategy. It introduces a noise-aware voltage-to-weight model considering DAC and thermal variations, and a workload-aware framework to co-optimize MRR array size and layer-wise dataflow. Optimized arrays reduce the aggregated relative energy-delay product (EDP) by 64% and 26% compared with DEAP-CNNs and a general compact array, respectively. OSA further contributes 29% EDP reduction. The proposed hybrid mapping strategy improves CIFAR-10 accuracy by 8.3% over weight-stationary mapping while achieving an average 54.7% lower EDP than DEAP-CNNs.

A Reconfigurable Multiplier Architecture for Error-Resilient Applications in RISC-V Core

Neural Networks (NNs) have been widely adopted due to their outstanding efficacy and adaptability across computer vision and deep learning applications. The optimization of NNs is necessary to enable their deployment on energy constrained embedded devices, where the limited available energy poses a significant challenge for efficient inference. This paper presents a runtime reconfigurable multiplier architecture integrated into the RISC-V core, targeting energy efficient neural network inference and edge AI applications. The proposed multiplier supports adaptability for exact and approximate computation with multiple configurable accuracy levels via a dedicated mulscr, enabling fine-grained energy accuracy control within a standard processor pipeline. The proposed design achieves 44%-52% and 62%-68% power reduction in exact and approximate modes respectively, while maintaining the computational performance of 1.89 DMIPS/MHz. Evaluations on error-tolerant workloads including 2d convolution and matrix multiplication demonstrate up to 63% reduction in energy consumption, with the proposed design achieving 1.21 pJ/instruction for matrix multiplication, confirming its effectiveness for energy-constrained edge AI deployments.

Deep Binarized Photonic Reservoir Computing for Ultrafast Multimedia Signal Processing

We present a deep photonic neural network architecture based on ultrafast binary optical modulation from a digital micro-mirror device (DMD), optical scattering in random medium, high-speed photodetection with a CMOS sensor, and time-multiplexed deep layer structure. Operating at Gigabit-per-second (Gb/s) processing rates, our system based on the reservoir computing (RC) framework achieves state-of-the-art performance across various multimedia tasks, including video, image and speech recognition. We show that the careful optimization of key physical intra- and inter-layer hyper-parameters can significantly enhance the deep photonic RC system ability to extract relevant temporal and spatial features via balancing memory retention and dynamical response of individual layers. This approach paves the way for highly scalable hierarchical photonic reservoir computing systems for high-throughput real-time multimedia signal processing.

An Integrated Hardware-Software Design for Low-Data Spatial Defect Detection in Robotic Visual Inspection with Hybrid Optoelectronic Neural Networks

To address data overload and inefficient shape-level annotation in robotic visual inspection, this paper proposes a hardware-software integrated optoelectronic architecture. A non-imaging, low-data paradigm is established to minimize annotation dependency. First, a sensor-in-the-loop strategy reconfigures a Digital Micromirror Device (DMD) as a physical optical convolutional layer, enabling photonic-domain feature extraction that unifies sensing hardware and processing software. To suppress data volume at the source, a block-based compressed sensing strategy encodes spatial information into low-dimensional temporal signals, drastically reducing redundancy. Subsequently, to bypass laborious manual defect shape annotation, natural language descriptions guide the network to align with highly generalizable features from Contrastive Language-Image Pre-training (CLIP), steering the attention maps of the optoelectronic neural network toward defect shapes. Furthermore, a Localization Accuracy for Attention (LAA) metric is proposed to quantify shape-level defect localization performance. Experiments on transparent material defect detection validate the system's effectiveness. Parametric analysis reveals how measurement matrices, compression ratios, and block sizes affect accuracy. Results show that, compared to traditional imaging, the proposed architecture maintains equivalent accuracy while reducing data volume by 90% for Vision Transformers and computational workload by 60% for Convolutional Neural Networks. This low-data paradigm offers an efficient solution for industrial automation scenarios involving massive data streams, high acquisition costs, or constrained edge resources.
