Reddit2Deezer: A Scalable Dataset for Real-World Grounded Conversational Music Recommendation

Abstract

Conversational music recommendation (CMR) research currently faces a tradeoff between authentic dialogue corpora that are limited in scale and synthesized corpora that scale up but whose conversations are artificially constructed rather than naturally observed. In this paper, we introduce Reddit2Deezer, a reality-grounded CMR resource derived from 190k unique {thread, leaf-comment} pairs. We release the resource in two versions: a raw version that preserves authenticity, and a paraphrased version that maximizes long-term reproducibility. Each musical entity is linked to a Deezer identifier, which provides straightforward access to audio previews and rich metadata (e.g., genre tags, popularity, BPM), opening the door to future research on content-grounded conversational recommendation. A human validation confirms the quality of the dialogues, item grounding, and paraphrases. The dataset is available at https://huggingface.co/datasets/McAuley-Lab/Reddit2Deezer.

Two Views, One Voice: Evidence-Grounded Conversational Music Recommendation

Traditional conversational recommenders entangle retrieval and response generation within a single text interface, so exact entity cues fade as the dialogue's intent evolves, which compromises explanation credibility. We address this within the ACM RecSys Challenge 2026, which mandates both top-20 ranking and evidence-grounded response generation. This paper presents the third-place solution by team "swyoo" for the Blind-B industry track. We decouple retrieval and response into separate pipelines connected strictly via ranked tracks and metadata. Retrieval combines a hybrid lexical-dense pool for exact matching with a task-adapted pool driven by fine-tuned Qwen 8B adapters. Candidates are calibrated via LightGBM, then routed to an evidence-grounded propose-assign-select (PAS) framework to structure responses. This system also ranked second on the explanation-quality leaderboard in the final blind evaluation. Our findings demonstrate that: (i) isolating retrieval and response preserves both catalog cues and fluid intent; (ii) structuring generation via explicit evidence assignment is key to this near-best-in-class explanation reliability.

MUUNRiver-Bench: Diagnosing Relation-Dependent Music Retrieval with Multimodal Instructions

Music retrieval is relation-dependent: given a reference track, a listener may seek its style with a new theme, a cover, or a comparable voice, and these intents demand contradictory rankings. We present MUUNRiver-Bench, a diagnostic benchmark whose reference-audio queries use natural-language instructions to define relevance. A pipeline combining expert genre priors, LLM-generated prompts and lyrics, synthesis, and expert review yields 3,440 tracks spanning 13 genres and 116 sub-genres, and seven tasks: similar-music, style-preserving lyric-rewriting, lyric-preserving style-rewriting, cover, vocal-timbre, isolated-vocal, and segment retrieval. Across six models in eight configurations, task-wise rank reversals reveal complementary biases: acoustic encoders favour local identity, whereas text-aligned encoders favour semantic relations. Frozen encoders diagnose default similarity preferences; instruction-aware and audio-text fusion systems provide exploratory tests of textual conditioning, with neither simple fusion scheme consistently improving its backbone

TuneJury: An Open Metric for Improving Music Generation Preference Alignment

We introduce TuneJury, an open, instance-level pairwise reward model for text-to-music that predicts a music preference score from a text prompt and an audio clip. The released checkpoint is trained on publicly available human-preference labels covering arena-style (A vs. B) votes, metric-alignment preference pairs, crowdsourced pairwise comparisons, and expert aesthetic ratings. The predicted score margin between two clips is well calibrated on our held-out test split, supporting data filtering via a simple score threshold. TuneJury generalizes to both held-out test pairs and out-of-distribution benchmarks, remaining competitive with prior baselines on the latter. For generators released after training, we introduce anchor calibration, a post-hoc, per-system Bradley-Terry calibration that recovers agreement at substantially better data efficiency than from-scratch retraining. The same frozen reward drives consistent reward-axis gains across three downstream applications: inference-time best-of-N selection, DITTO-style latent optimization, and expert-iteration post-training.
