Matching Meaning at Scale: Evaluating Semantic Search for 18th-Century Intellectual History through the Case of Locke

Abstract

While digitized corpora have transformed the study of intellectual transmission, current methods rely heavily on lexical text reuse detection, capturing verbatim quotations but fundamentally missing paraphrases and complex implicit engagement. This paper evaluates semantic search in 18th-century intellectual history through the reception of John Locke's foundational work. Using expert annotation grounded in a semantic taxonomy, we examine whether an off-the-shelf semantic search pipeline can surface meaning-level correspondences overlooked by lexical methods. Our results demonstrate that semantic search retrieves substantially more implicit receptions than lexical baselines. However, linguistic diagnostics also reveal a "lexical gatekeeping" effect, where retrieval remains partially constrained by surface vocabulary overlap. These findings highlight both the potential and the limitations of semantic retrieval for analyzing the circulation of ideas in large historical corpora. Comparing Semantic Navigation in Humans and Large Language Models using Natural Language Processing

Semantic memory retrieval can be conceptualized as navigation through conceptual space. We compared semantic search dynamics between humans and three large language models (GPT-4o, Gemini-2.5-Pro, Claude-Sonnet-4.5) using verbal fluency data. By applying trajectory-based NLP metrics to the items generated by 82 human participants and LLM output across eight temperature settings, we quantified three complementary dimensions: entropy (step size predictability), distance to next (successive semantic steps), and distance to centroid (global dispersion). Humans exhibited higher entropy, larger semantic steps and broader dispersion than all LLMs, indicating more variable and exploratory search. Temperature tuning produced only partial alignments, as individual metrics matched between humans and LLMs at specific settings, but no configuration reproduced the complete human profile (in all dimensions). These findings suggest that human semantic search implements a distinctive balance between local exploitation and global exploration that current model architectures fail to reproduce.

OBLIQ-Bench: Exposing Overlooked Bottlenecks in Modern Retrievers with Latent and Implicit Queries

Retrieval benchmarks are increasingly saturating, but we argue that efficient search is far from a solved problem. We identify a class of queries we call oblique, which seek documents that instantiate a latent pattern, like finding all tweets that express an implicit stance, chat logs that demonstrate a particular failure mode, or transcripts that match an abstract scenario. We study three mechanisms through which obliqueness may arise and introduce OBLIQ-Bench, a suite of five oblique search problems over real long-tail corpora. OBLIQ-Bench exposes an overlooked asymmetry between retrieval and verification, where reasoning LLMs reliably recognize latent relevance whenever relevant documents are surfaced, but even sophisticated retrieval pipelines fail to surface most relevant documents in the first place. We hope that OBLIQ-Bench will drive research into retrieval architectures that efficiently capture latent patterns and implicit signals in large corpora.

Inspicio: Open-Vocabulary, LLM-Based Sense Retrieval for Historical Languages

Word Sense Disambiguation has advanced rapidly for English and a handful of well-resourced modern languages, but it continues to assume the existence of a sense inventory and a word-to-sense mapping in the source language (Navigli, 2026). These assumptions break down for most historical and low-resource languages, whose dedicated WordNets are either incomplete or still under construction. We present Inspicio, an open-vocabulary retrieval pipeline that links tokens in context to synsets of the Open English WordNet (McCrae et al., 2020) without requiring any source-language inventory or mapping. For each occurrence, an instruction-tuned LLM produces two English translations of the surrounding sentence, a small set of candidate dictionary-style definitions, and a few candidate English lemmas. These outputs drive a hybrid retrieval step that combines dense definition-synset similarity, sparse lemma matching, and Maximal Marginal Relevance re-ranking. We evaluate the pipeline across a 6x6 grid of LLMs and sentence-embedding models on a new bilingual set of manually annotated Latin and Ancient Greek perception verbs, on a subset of PREMOVE dataset (Farina, 2025), and on a diachronic sample of Italian. The best configuration reaches 96% Recall@50 on the perception-verb test set, with each component contributing measurable gains, and remains competitive in the out-of-domain and cross-lingual settings.
