Abstract
Text simplification plays a crucial role in improving the accessibility and comprehensibility of written information for diverse audiences, including language learners and readers with limited literacy. Despite its importance, large-scale, high-quality datasets for training and evaluating text simplification models remain scarce for languages other than English. This paper reports an experimental study on the collection and processing of crowd-sourced simplification data from comparable corpora to construct a corpus suitable for both training and testing text simplification systems across multiple languages (Catalan, English, French, Italian and Spanish). We report mechanisms for sentence-level alignment from document-level data. The resulting dataset of the aligned sentence pairs is publicly available.
We introduce the first dataset that jointly covers both lexical complexity prediction (LCP) annotations and lexical simplification (LS) for Romanian, along with a comparison of lexical simplification approaches. We propose a methodology for ordering simplification suggestions using a pairwise ranking approximation method, arranging candidates from simple to complex based on a separate set of human judgments. In addition, we provide human lexical complexity annotations for 3,921 word samples in context. Finally, we explore several novel pipelines for complexity prediction and simplification and present the first text simplification system for Romanian.

Cross-Lingual Text Simplification (CLTS) aims to make content more accessible across languages by simultaneously addressing both linguistic complexity and translation. This study investigates the effectiveness of different prompting strategies for CLTS between English and French using large language models (LLMs). We examine five distinct prompting systems: a direct prompt instructing the LLM to perform both translation and simplification simultaneously, two Composition approaches that either translate-then-simplify or simplify-then-translate within a single prompt, and two decomposition approaches that perform the same operations in separate, consecutive prompts. These systems are evaluated across a diverse set of five corpora of different genres (Wikipedia and medical texts) using seven state-of-the-art LLMs. Output quality is assessed through a multi-faceted evaluation framework comprising automatic metrics, comprehensive linguistic feature analysis, and human evaluation of simplicity and meaning preservation. Our findings reveal that while direct prompting consistently achieves the highest BLEU scores, indicating meaning fidelity, Translate-then-Simplify approaches demonstrate the highest simplicity, as measured by the linguistic features.
Several of the world's languages are still under-resourced in terms of Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools. This is mostly due to the lack of high-quality datasets to train, develop, and evaluate systems and models for several tasks, such as Machine Translation (MT). We conduct a manual audit of the parallel and monolingual corpora available for Lombard, an under-resourced language continuum from Italy. Our analysis reveals that the perceived abundance of web-scraped data is an illusion, with massive datasets plagued by severe language misidentification, boilerplate text, and non-linguistic noise. Furthermore, we analyze the orthographic composition of the valid Lombard portions across web-scraped datasets, curated corpora, and benchmarks. Our findings show conflicting orthographical systems and severe representational bias across all corpora: high-quality data is heavily skewed towards Western Lombard varieties, with Eastern ones left on the margins. This underscores the need for variety-aware, community-driven data curation rather than purely quantity-driven scraping.
