Abstract

This paper presents our systems and results for the Hope Speech Detection in Code-Mixed Tulu Language shared task at the Sixth Workshop on Speech, Vision, and Language Technologies for Dravidian Languages (DravidianLangTech-2026). We trained an XLM-RoBERTa-based text classification system for detecting hope speech in code-mixed Tulu social media comments. We compared this organically adapted hope speech detection model with our baseline model. On the development set, the organically adapted model outperformed the baseline system. While our submitted systems performed more modestly on the official test set, these results suggest that further adapting XLM-RoBERTa on organically collected Tulu social media text containing code-mixed and mixed-script variation can improve hope speech detection in code-mixed Tulu.

Efficient Adaptation of LLMs for Hate Speech Detection in Low-Resource Languages: A Comparative Study on Roman Urdu

It is challenging to detect hate speech in Low Resource Languages (LRLs) because of the absence of annotated data, the informality of its language structure, and the lack of standardized grammar. A good example of such a challenge is Roman Urdu which is broadly used by South Asians on social media and has a high variation while lacking contextually consistent spellings. The objective of this paper is to conduct a comprehensive assessment of Large Language Models (LLMs) for Hate Speech Detection (HSD) in Roman Urdu script and fine-tune these models using the Parameter-Efficient Fine-Tuning (PEFT) method called Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA). To evaluate zero-shot inference, we benchmarked it against PEFT on different transformer models, including Mistral, LLaMA, Falcon, and multilingual BERT. Experiments are conducted on the PURUTT (Parallel Urdu and Roman Urdu Corpus for Toxic Comments and Transliteration) dataset with over 72,000 annotated comments. The results suggest that zero shot models perform moderately (F1 = 0.56), but updating a small fraction of the model trainable parameters improves the classification performance significantly (F1 > 0.93). Our results have shown that PEFT delivers outstanding performance alongside excellent computational efficiency, making it highly suitable for low-resource language processing tasks.

When Spoof Detectors Travel: Evaluation Across 66 Languages in the Low-Resource Language Spoofing Corpus

We introduce LRLspoof, a large-scale multilingual synthetic-speech corpus for cross-lingual spoof detection, comprising 2,732 hours of audio generated with 24 open-source TTS systems across 66 languages, including 45 low-resource languages under our operational definition. To evaluate robustness without requiring target-domain bonafide speech, we benchmark 11 publicly available countermeasures using threshold transfer: for each model we calibrate an EER operating point on pooled external benchmarks and apply the resulting threshold, reporting spoof rejection rate (SRR). Results show model-dependent cross-lingual disparity, with spoof rejection varying markedly across languages even under controlled conditions, highlighting language as an independent source of domain shift in spoof detection. Efficiently Adapting Spoken Language Models for the Singaporean Context

Spoken language models (SLMs) unify speech perception and reasoning, but adapting them to sensitive domains is underexplored, especially when the original training data is inaccessible and the use case demands multilingual, spoken-query interaction. We adapt an open-source SLM to the Singaporean Home Team context across five speech tasks in Singapore's four official languages, combining LoRA fine-tuning, a surrogate text-QA dataset that guards against catastrophic forgetting, and a multi-task objective that adapts the CoBa reweighting scheme to speech. We also build HTD-multilingual-QA, a 504,853 sample multilingual QA dataset in text and spoken form. The resulting HT-Moonstone (5B) matches or outperforms SLMs up to 7x its size on most tasks, attains the best accent and gender recognition among all models evaluated, and loses under 2% of its original speech QA ability.
