A Reproducible Universal Dependencies-Style Pipeline for Katharevousa Greek Parliamentary Text

Abstract

Katharevousa Greek remains poorly served by contemporary NLP pipelines despite its importance for legal, administrative, and parliamentary archives. We present a reproducible workflow for building and evaluating a Universal Dependencies-style parsing resource for Katharevousa parliamentary questions from Greece's early post-junta period. The pipeline links OCR-aware reconstruction, schema-constrained LLM-assisted annotation, automatic validation, deterministic CoNLL-U snapshotting, fixed-split evaluation, and model-family comparison. The frozen automatically validated reference set contains 1{,}697 sentences, split into 1{,}357 training sentences and 340 held-out test sentences. We compare off-the-shelf Greek and Ancient Greek parsers, a feature-based parser, mBERT, XLM-R, and custom Stanza training under the same scoring protocol. Off-the-shelf systems show substantial register mismatch: the strongest external baseline, spaCy Greek, reaches 0.4183 LAS. The best structural parser, an XLM-R model, reaches 0.8893 UPOS accuracy, 0.7250 dependency-relation F1, 0.6098 UAS, and 0.5162 LAS, an absolute LAS gain of 0.0980 over the best external baseline. The feature-based model remains competitive for UPOS and relation labeling, indicating that transparent lexical-context features still matter at this data scale. Beyond scores, the paper contributes an auditable methodology for turning difficult historical parliamentary OCR into reusable syntactic NLP infrastructure. The entire pipeline -- code, schema, frozen reference annotations, fixed train/test split, and per-model benchmark reports -- is released as an open-access companion to this paper.

AthDGC: An Open Diachronic Greek Treebank with Indo-European Parallels

AthDGC ("Athens-PROIEL") is an open, end-to-end workflow and dataset. It is, to the best of our knowledge, the first openly licensed dependency-parsed treebank of Greek that spans eight diachronic periods, namely Archaic, Classical, Koine, Late Antique, Byzantine, Late Byzantine, Early Modern, and Modern Greek, under a single PROIEL XML 2.0 schema, with verse-level cross-alignment of the New Testament to Latin (Vulgate), Gothic (Wulfila), Old Church Slavonic (Marianus), and Classical Armenian. AthDGC builds on the PROIEL Treebank Family (Haug and Johndal 2008; Eckhoff et al. 2018), which established the schema and the Koine-Greek reference set for the project. Annotation uses the Stanford Stanza PROIEL-trained workflow; sentence-level alignment uses LaBSE, a multilingual sentence-embedding model; word-level alignment uses multilingual-BERT attention through the AwesomeAlign procedure. The v0.4 release provides curated samples and the open-source toolkit; the full annotated corpus partitions remain under v0.5 audit on the Greek national HPC. Quantitative scale, per-witness verse counts, and per-period annotated-row counts are reported in the v0.5 release notes, after the audit pass completes. Concept DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.20439182.

Stoicheia: Character-Level Masked Diffusion for Ancient Greek Textual Restoration, Parsing, and Metrical Scansion

We introduce Stoicheia, a 405M-parameter character-level masked-diffusion encoder for Ancient Greek whose input factors into five aligned, independently maskable planes: letters, word and sentence boundaries, diacritics, capitalization, and punctuation. A single backbone can therefore restore lacunae, re-segment, accentuate, and punctuate unspaced text without task-specific retokenization. We pretrain it on an open, revision-pinned corpus of 380M words and release eleven checkpoints: ten rotated, decontaminated folds, guaranteeing that for any given literary passage at least one released model has never seen its text, and one with no exposure to documentary texts. Three experiments - reconstruction of damaged inscriptions and papyri, morphosyntactic tagging and dependency parsing, and macronization with metrical scansion - each carry a matched random-initialization control, isolating what character-level diffusion pretraining contributes: 5.6 CER points on inscription reconstruction, 12.9 LAS on parsing, and 6.0 points of balanced accuracy on macronization. On Ithaca's own test split, with identical frozen samples and strict scoring, Stoicheia reduces character error relative to both prior state-of-the-art systems, from 24.6 (Ithaca) and 23.5 (its 2025 Aeneas-framework successor) to 15.5, and raises top-1 accuracy from 63.0 and 64.0 to 74.5.

Ancient Greek to Modern Greek Machine Translation: A Novel Benchmark and Fine-Tuning Experiments on LLMs and NMT Models

Machine Translation (MT) for Ancient Greek (AG) to Modern Greek (MG) is a low-resource task, constrained by the lack of large-scale, high-quality parallel data. We address this gap by introducing the AG-MG Parallel Corpus, a new resource containing 132,481 sentence-aligned pairs derived from literary, historical, and biblical texts. We present a novel corpus creation pipeline that combines web-scraped, excerpt-level data with a multi-stage sentence-level alignment, and refinement process. Our method uses VecAlign with LaBSE embeddings, which we first fine-tune on a manually-aligned AG-MG subset, followed by an LLM-based error/misalignment correction phase using Gemini 2.5 Flash to ensure high alignment quality. Furthermore, we provide the first comprehensive benchmark of modern MT models on this task, evaluating three fine-tuning strategies across NMT models (NLLB, M2M100) and a Greek LLM (Llama-Krikri-8B). Our experiments show that fine-tuning yields significant improvements over base models, increasing performance by up to +10.3 BLEU points. Specifically, full-parameter fine-tuning of Llama-Krikri-8B achieves the highest overall performance with a BLEU score of 13.16, while the QLoRA-adapted M2M100-1.2B model demonstrates the largest relative gains and highly competitive results. Our dataset and models represent a significant contribution to Greek NLP.
