Abstract

Segment-level disclosures are a central component of financial reporting, providing insight into firms' internal organization and the allocation of economic activities across operating units. However, segment information is often presented in both qualitative and quantitative forms, dispersed across tables and narrative sections of Form 10-K filings. Empirical research relying on structured databases faces both completeness and comparability challenges, as some firm-year observations may be missing, nested segment disclosures are not captured, and support for longitudinal and cross-firm comparability is limited. This study develops a large language model-based framework to extract segment disclosures directly from Form 10-K filings and to preserve both reportable and nested segment information. We further design a retrieval augmented system that incorporates information across multiple filings to support comparability. We use two representative settings to demonstrate its application: longitudinal analysis within a firm to interpret segment changes over time, and cross firm alignment of geographic segments across firms with different reporting structures. The results indicate that the artifact accurately extracts segment-level information and effectively addresses questions that require cross-period knowledge, demonstrating the potential of LLM-based approaches to enhance the measurement and interpretation of segment disclosures.

A Training-Free, Alignment-Free Approach to Corporate Intelligence: Application to SEC Filings

High-dimensional dense text embeddings and large language models face real obstacles in financial-disclosure analysis: context-window limits, hallucination risk, high computational cost, and the arbitrary rotation of vector spaces across independently trained models. We present a training-free, alignment-free framework for corporate intelligence built on deterministic sparse seed vectors. Hashing word strings into a fixed high-dimensional basis places all documents and all temporal epochs in a common coordinate system by construction, removing any need for training or alignment. Accumulating these seed vectors across sentence contexts yields corpus-specific semantic signatures that compose linearly, supporting sub-second document comparison, issuer fingerprinting, tracking of how an issuer's vocabulary shifts between filings, and thematic sentence extraction, all on ordinary CPU hardware. Demonstrating the approach on a multi-year corpus of SEC filings (10-K, 10-Q, 8-K), we show how material corporate events, among them Boeing's 737 MAX crisis, Intel's supply-chain disruptions, and Bunge's acquisition of Viterra, emerge as distinct, interpretable semantic profiles, each traceable to the exact source sentences that produced it, with no domain-specific training and no LLM inference.

The Stanford EDGAR Filings Dataset: Reconstructing U.S. Corporate and Financial Disclosures into Layout-Faithful and Token-Efficient Pretraining Data

As high-quality public web corpora become increasingly exhausted, clean long-context documents have become a scarce and expensive source of training data for large language models (LLMs). Existing long-context corpora are often proprietary and costly to acquire, synthetically generated, or concentrated in narrow domains such as programming. We introduce the Stanford EDGAR Filings Dataset (SEFD), an open reconstruction of SEC filings into layout-faithful MultiMarkdown for financial language modeling and evaluation. SEFD makes audited financial statements, risk disclosures, ownership reports, accounting notes, and market-moving event filings usable as long-context pretraining data and as a basis for financial reasoning, forecasting, compliance, and document understanding. The resulting corpus is token-efficient, model-ready, and has less than 0.1% overlap with Common Crawl-derived corpora. We release SEFD-v1, a 152B-token initial public snapshot, and provide corpus-level analyses of a larger 18.5M-filing archive estimated at 550B tokens. We further introduce two SEFD-derived benchmarks: EDGAR-Forecast, which evaluates filing-grounded numerical forecasting after model knowledge cutoffs, and EDGAR-OCR, which evaluates transcription of complex financial tables.

LEDGER: A Long-Context Benchmark of Corporate Annual Reports for Grounded Financial Retrieval and Extraction

Finance reporting is a natural proving ground for large language models, and the very-long-context capabilities of recent models across all sizes make rigorous evaluation in this domain an increasingly pressing need. Yet most public financial resources reduce the task to plain-text SEC 10-K filings paired with a handful of question-answer items. We release LEDGER (Long-context Evaluation of Documents for Grounded Extraction and Retrieval), a corpus of 4,999 digitized corporate annual reports - full documents with figures, tables, and narrative, not just regulatory filings. Each report is labeled with 31 consolidated financial KPIs to be extracted and linked to the market's reaction at the earnings date. From this data we derive three evaluation benchmarks spanning the difficulty spectrum: a pure page-level KPI retrieval task with TREC-style relevance judgments over 118,048 questions in natural language, a conversational "needle-in-a-haystack" single-value lookup, and a full KPI extraction task, both from long, numerically dense reports. We additionally provide human OCR-quality annotations with inter-annotator agreement and the complete extraction, validation, and scoring toolchain. We further demonstrate the dataset's research utility with a case study linking CEO-letter rhetoric to post-publication market impact.
