Abstract

Copy Detection Patterns (CDPs) are structures printed on physical objects to enable cost-effective authentication. Verification is achieved by comparing a captured image with the digital template from which the CDP was printed. In practice, printer stochasticity and camera distortions hinder this comparison, limiting robustness against counterfeiting. Prior work addressed camera effects by synthesising reference images in the verification camera domain, but it ignored printing variability. We introduce an enrolment-based cross-camera dual-synthetic referencing framework. Each printed CDP is first captured by a controlled enrolment camera, and a deep-learning-based translator jointly exploits the digital template and the enrolled capture to generate a high-quality reference for the verification image. We provide an information-theoretic justification showing that the dual reference is more informative than template-based references. Experiments on heterogeneous mobile cameras demonstrate improved authentication performance, robustness to machine-learning-based copy attacks, and reliable verification from small CDP regions and on low-end devices.

Diffusion-Based Multi-Class Normality for OOD Detection: An Application to CDP Authentication

Reconstruction-based generative models offer a natural framework for unsupervised out-of-distribution (OOD) detection, but multi-class normality modelling requires a single detector to capture multiple in-distribution manifolds and produce comparable anomaly scores across classes. We study this problem in copy detection pattern (CDP) authentication, where authentic and counterfeit samples are visually similar but differ in subtle printing-and-digitisation (P&D) signatures. We propose a diffusion based multi-class normality framework in which a single class-conditional ControlNet is trained exclusively on authentic CDPs from multiple P&D classes and detects counterfeits through reconstruction error under authentic-class conditioning. We further introduce dual template masking, which hides complementary regions of the input template and scores only withheld pixels, reducing reliance on visible binary structure. On the Indigo 1 x 1 Base dataset, the proposed method outperforms traditional and adapted generative baselines under multi-class authentic-versus-counterfeit evaluation, without using counterfeit samples for training or threshold calibration.

REVEAL: Reference-Grounded Reasoning for Multimodal Manipulation Detection

Multimodal manipulation detection aims to simultaneously identify forged image--text pairs and localize tampered regions, yet existing methods typically rely on memorizing isolated artifacts and struggle with imperceptible manipulation traces or domain shifts. Inspired by human comparative reasoning, we reformulate this task as a reference-grounded verification problem, where authenticity is assessed by comparing a query against retrieved authentic evidence. We propose REVEAL Reference-Enabled Verification for Evidence Analysis and Localization), a framework explicitly designed for this comparative paradigm. To support this paradigm, we construct a large-scale reference library comprising 170K authentic news image--text pairs featuring over 40K public figures. Technically, REVEAL employs a difference-aware fusion mechanism to capture fine-grained discrepancies between the query and retrieved evidence. Furthermore, we introduce a task-decoupled Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architecture to jointly execute instance-level detection and fine-grained grounding, effectively mitigating optimization conflicts between these heterogeneous objectives. Extensive experiments demonstrate that REVEAL significantly outperforms state-of-the-art methods, and notably enables \emph{training-free domain adaptation} by simply updating the reference library, offering a robust and practical solution for detecting evolving misinformation. DeepSignature: Digitally Signed, Content-Encoding Watermarks for Robust and Transparent Image Authentication

AI-powered generative models have significantly expanded the possibilities for editing, manipulating, and creating high-quality images. Particularly, images that falsely appear to originate from trusted sources pose a serious threat, undermining public trust in image authenticity. We propose DeepSignature, a novel approach that integrates the guarantees of digital signatures with the capabilities of deep neural networks. Neural networks are used both to generate content-encoding watermarks and to embed them imperceptibly into images while ensuring robust extraction. These watermarks are cryptographically verifiable, enabling source attribution and image integrity validation. DeepSignature is compatible with existing image formats and requires no special handling of signed images. It supports client-side verification, requiring only the signer's public key. Additionally, we introduce a novel latent-space verification approach to detect and localize tampering attempts. We evaluate DeepSignature in terms of imperceptibility, robustness to benign transformations, forgery detection, and its resilience against various attack scenarios. Our results highlight the inherent trade-offs between imperceptibility, robustness, and integrity verification. We demonstrate that DeepSignature reliably identifies significant forgery attempts -- achieving near 100% in our experiments. Finally, we emphasize DeepSignature's modularity and tunable parameters, allowing adaptation to application-specific requirements. Code and model weights will be published.
