Abstract

This paper addresses the challenge of simultaneously compensating for state-dependent uncertainties and enforcing time-varying state constraints in Euler-Lagrange systems, a common requirement in robotics that remains underserved by existing control designs. A novel adaptive control framework is developed that combines an artificial time-delay-based uncertainty estimation strategy, also known as time-delay estimation, with a barrier Lyapunov function to enforce constraint-aware control design. Specifically, a state-dependent upper bound on the time-delay estimation approximation error is analytically formulated, and an adaptive law is constructed to estimate its parameters online, enabling real-time state-dependent uncertainty compensation without relying on prior model knowledge. To ensure constraint compliance, the barrier Lyapunov function-based controller enforces time-varying bounds on both position and velocity. The resulting architecture is provably stable via Lyapunov analysis. Experimental results on a five-degree-of-freedom robotic manipulator validate the framework's capability, compared with the state of the art, in maintaining strict adherence to safety-critical constraints under dynamic uncertainties.

Input-Constrained Spatiotemporal Tubes for Safe Navigation of Unknown Euler-Lagrange Systems in Dynamic Environments

Safe navigation in dynamic environments is challenging when system dynamics are unknown and actuator inputs are limited. Existing methods either rely on accurate models, require online optimization, or do not explicitly account for input constraints. This paper presents a real-time control framework for unknown Euler-Lagrange systems that guarantees finite-time reach-avoid-stay (FT-RAS) specifications while respecting actuator limits. We extend the spatiotemporal tube (STT) framework by incorporating input constraints into the controller design and derive offline-verifiable feasibility conditions that relate the available control authority to the tube design and uncertainty bounds. The resulting framework is approximation-free and computationally efficient, making it suitable for real-time implementation. The proposed approach is validated through simulations on a mobile robot, a quadrotor, and a spacecraft, together with hardware experiments on a mobile robot, demonstrating safe navigation while satisfying actuator constraints.

Temporal Attention for Adaptive Control of Euler-Lagrange Systems with Unobservable Memory

Adaptive control of Euler-Lagrange systems is challenging when friction is governed by a finite-horizon internal state that is not directly observable from joint measurements. In this setting, the measured closed-loop state is no longer Markovian, and standard certainty-equivalence adaptive laws may lose their convergence guarantees. The paper proposes a meta-control architecture in which the gains of a computed-torque controller are generated by a self-attention block processing a short window of recent motion history. The number of attention heads is selected before policy training through a surrogate analysis of the autocovariance of the memory-state gradient along the temporal window. This surrogate is based on a temporal adaptation of an incremental rank-tracking framework previously developed by the authors. The selected head count is then fixed and used as an architectural hyperparameter in a reinforcement-learning stage, where the policy is trained under a shielded admissibility constraint. The approach is tested on a 2-DOF manipulator with nonlinear friction and variable payload. In the short and matched memory regimes, the single-layer attention-only meta-controller outperforms a deeper Transformer baseline, with tracking-error reductions of 12 and 19 percentage points, respectively. The reported effect sizes are large, with d approximately -1.1 and -2.1, and Mann-Whitney p < 0.05 in both cases. In the long memory regime, however, the advantage disappears. Four out of ten training runs show either divergence or payload-invariant policy collapse, revealing a weakness in the static Phase-1 head-count prescription. This motivates moving rank-tracking inside the reinforcement-learning loop, allowing attention heads to be pruned or grown at runtime instead of fixed before training.

Safety-Critical Adaptive Impedance Control via Nonsmooth Control Barrier Functions under State and Input Constraints

Safe physical interaction is critical for deploying robotic manipulators in human-robot interaction and contact-rich tasks, where uncertainty, external forces, and actuator limitations can compromise both performance and safety. We propose an online adaptive impedance control framework that enforces joint-state safety while achieving compliant interaction under uncertain dynamics. The approach combines a quadratic-program-based safety filter with a novel composed position-velocity non-smooth control barrier function (NCBF), enabling joint position and velocity constraints to be enforced through a unified relative-degree-one barrier. Unknown dynamics are compensated online using an interval type-2 fuzzy logic system, while actuator torque limits are handled through soft constraints with exact penalty recovery of feasible solutions. A disturbance-observer-enhanced safety mechanism improves robustness against modelling errors and external interaction forces. Using composite Lyapunov analysis, we prove forward invariance of the safe set and the uniform ultimately boundedness of the impedance-tracking error. Simulations on a 7-DOF manipulator with severe parametric uncertainty and external interaction wrenches demonstrate safe constraint satisfaction and robust impedance tracking.
