Next-Generation Parallel Decoder for LPDR: Architectural Optimization and Class-Balanced GAN-Augmentation

Authors: Shawaiz ObaidNida ChandioNeha JamilMuhammad Khuram Shahzad

Abstract

Real-Time License Plate Detection and Recognition (LPDR) forms the backbone of modern smart cities. Although the YOLOV5-PDLPR model substantially improved system efficiency through a parallel decoder approach, its performance is still affected by spatial character mismatches and data imbalance within the training set. This paper addresses these limitations by introducing Cross-Spatial Hybrid Attention (CSHA) and Class-Balanced Synthetic Augmentation (CBSA). An extensive study involving 75,000 synthetic samples is conducted and evaluated on four benchmarks: CCPD, CLPD, PKU, and an application-specific dataset. Experimental results demonstrate a substantial improvement in the recognition rate of minority provincial license plates from 78.2% to 91.5% while maintaining real-time processing performance of 152 FPS. The results indicate that spatially-aware parallel decoding combined with class-balanced augmentation provides an effective solution for high-speed license plate recognition systems.

HAT Super-Resolution and a PARSeq+CLIP4STR Voting Ensemble for Extreme In-the-Wild License Plate Recognition

We describe our entry to the ICIP 2026 Grand Challenge on Extreme In-the-Wild License Plate Super-Resolution (XLPSR), which scored 9.73 wECR on the public validation leaderboard. The system pairs a Hybrid Attention Transformer super-resolution (HAT) front-end with an ensemble of two scene-text recognisers (PARSeq-S and CLIP4STR-B) and a confidence-weighted character-voting scheme that abstains on uncertain positions. We treat XLPSR as a recognition task gated by image legibility: the SR step exists to lift characters out of sub-pixel territory, and the asymmetric scoring rule (+2 / -1 / 0) is exploited explicitly through abstention. Our pipeline runs in 1.7 s per sequence on RTX 3090 (max 2.7 s, p99 2.4 s), well under the 60 s/sequence Docker budget.

MicroCharNet: Less is More for License Plate Character Detection

License plate character detection is a crucial component of intelligent transportation systems, where high accuracy and computational efficiency are required for real-time deployment. Although recent deep learning-based methods have substantially improved detection performance, many high-accuracy models rely on large-scale architectures that incur substantial computational overhead, limiting their applicability to resource-constrained devices. In this paper, we propose MicroCharNet, an ultra-lightweight model specifically designed for license plate character detection. The proposed architecture employs a compact backbone composed of C2f blocks, integrated with CoordAtt module to enhance feature extraction while preserving spatial information. A lightweight C3k2-based neck fuses multi-level features, followed by a single-level anchor-free detection head that enables end-to-end prediction. Experiments conducted on the UFPR-ALPR dataset demonstrate that MicroCharNet achieves competitive detection accuracy with only 0.08M parameters and 0.096 GFLOPs, while outperforming several recent YOLO-based baselines. Hardware-level evaluations further confirm its efficiency for real-time deployment on edge devices. These results indicate that carefully designed ultra-lightweight architectures can effectively balance accuracy and efficiency in license plate character detection. BLPR: Robust License Plate Recognition under Viewpoint and Illumination Variations via Confidence-Driven VLM Fallback

Robust license plate recognition in unconstrained environments remains a significant challenge, particularly in underrepresented regions with limited data availability and unique visual characteristics, such as Bolivia. Recognition accuracy in real-world conditions is often degraded by illumination changes and viewpoint distortion. To address these challenges, we introduce BLPR, a deep learning-based License Plate Detection and Recognition (LPDR) framework designed for Bolivian license plates. BLPR adaptively applies geometric rectification, illumination correction, and VLM-assisted fallback based on image-condition and confidence cues. The proposed system uses a YOLO-based detector pretrained on synthetic data generated in Blender to simulate extreme perspectives and lighting conditions, and is fine-tuned on street-level data collected in La Paz, Bolivia. Detected plates are processed by a YOLO-based character recognizer, while a lightweight vision-language model (Gemma3 4B) is selectively triggered in ambiguous cases as a confidence-driven fallback mechanism. We also introduce the first publicly available Bolivian LPDR dataset for academic research, supporting evaluation under diverse viewpoint and illumination conditions. The system achieves a character-level recognition accuracy of 89.6% on real-world data, demonstrating its effectiveness for deployment in challenging urban environments.
