Sustainability and Artificial Intelligence: Necessary, Challenging, and Promising Intersections

Abstract

Both digital economy and digital technology researchers increasingly recognize the need to better address the role that artificial intelligence (AI) plays in shaping the evolution of the environmental, social and governance aspects of development. It appears that sustainability and AI research converge on the features of wicked problems that are complex, interconnected and dynamic. Building off such convergence, this article aims to map out the necessary, challenging, and promising intersections by providing an overview of the state of art research. Based on 541 bibliographic data collected from the Web of Science (WoS) database, the findings reveal the increasingly central body of work on green and sustainable science and technology in bridging various disciplines, main journals and key topics and concepts. The findings reveal how such interactions can be necessary, challenging, and promising. The article concludes with few general arguments regarding how to diversify and expand the community of practice regarding AI for sustainable development, especially in the areas of expected AI application areas and institutions.

Artificial Intelligence Literacy and Sustainable Development: An Ethical Governance and Development Goals Framework

AI literacy provides foundational competencies that support ethical, transparent, and sustainable technological development, although higher-order capabilities such as governance, critical evaluation, and strategic decision-making extend beyond basic literacy into advanced levels of AI competency. This study positions AI literacy as a governance capacity that complements and strengthens all 17 SDGs. It introduces a six-level taxonomy of artificial intelligence reasoning and ethics that extends traditional learning models by incorporating ethical judgement and strategic foresight. This taxonomy forms the foundation of an integrated framework linking education, governance, and sustainable development. A survey of 300 participants from diverse professional backgrounds within a national context which reveals strong technical awareness but limited ethical and governance readiness, highlighting critical gaps in public capacity to manage artificial intelligence responsibly. Findings show that ethical reasoning and reflective thinking are the strongest predictors of sustainable and trustworthy artificial intelligence use. The study proposed to embed literacy-based competencies into curricula, institutional policies, and governance mechanisms to accelerate equitable and responsible progress toward sustainable development goals

When AI Meets Science: Research Diversity, Interdisciplinarity, Visibility, and Retractions across Disciplines in a Global Surge

The extent to which Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies can trigger generalized paradigm shifts in science is unclear. Although these technologies have revolutionized data collection and analysis in specific fields, their overall impact depends on the scope and ways of adoption. We analyze over 227 million scholarly works from the OpenAlex collection (1960-2024) spanning four scientific domains and 46 fields. To distinguish the use of AI as research method (AI adoption) from mentioning AI-related terms (AI engagement), we developed a two-step AI-assisted semantic classification pipeline, validated through human coding of 911 abstracts and a robustness check on 348,000 full-text articles (PLOS One). We document differences in the timing and extent of AI adoption across domains, with generalized exponential growth after 2015. The transformative nature of this growth, however, is less apparent. AI-supported research is confined to a few topics with strong ties to Computer Science and conventional statistical frameworks, suggesting limited epistemological transformation. It is also associated with an unwarranted citation premium and substantially higher retraction rates than non-AI-supported. Geographically, while wealthy countries lead in AI publications per capita, global South countries in a belt from Indonesia to Algeria lead in AI adoption relative to their national output, signaling a distinctive resource concentration pattern. The transformative capacity of AI in science thus remains untapped, and its rapid adoption underlines challenges in research openness, transparency, reproducibility, and ethics. We discuss how best research practices could boost the benefits of AI adoption and highlight areas that warrant closer scrutiny.

Artificial Intelligence and Innovation Ecosystem: Evolutionary Developments, Challenges, and Future Directions

The development of the Innovative Ecosystem (IE) presents a new paradigm for economic integration, collaborative advancement, and shared achievements. The rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has significantly accelerated the global processes of digitization, informatization, and intelligence. Exploring how AI can leverage inherent characteristics to influence the development trajectory of IE is a topic that warrants further investigation. Given AI's increasing prominence and role within IE, the paper analyzes this new form, examining both AI's unique contributions to IE and its potential challenges. Firstly, the paper synthesizes the conceptual frameworks surrounding IE, decomposing them into manifestations in physical, social, and thinking spaces. Furthermore, the concept of Artificial Intelligence IE (AIIE) is introduced from a spatial perspective, with an exploration of the characteristics AI contributes to IE. Subsequently, the paper employs an evolutionary perspective to analyze the roles provided by AI during different development periods of AIIE. The paper then verifies the feasibility, effectiveness, and rationality of the AIIE's definition and analyzes AIIE development from an evolutionary perspective using enterprise development examples. Finally, acknowledging AI's inherent limitations, the paper examines potential challenges facing AIIE in the future from four perspectives, aiming to identify new research avenues for the further development of AIIE.
