Evaluating and Preserving Lexical Stress in English-to-Chinese Speech-to-Speech Translation

Abstract

Speech-to-speech translation (S2ST) systems have achieved impressive progress in semantic accuracy and speech naturalness. However, the cross-lingual transfer of lexical stress, a vital cue for emphasis and speaker intent, remains heavily underexplored, compounded by a lack of reliable automatic evaluation metrics for tonal languages like Chinese. We investigate English-to-Chinese S2ST stress transfer by constructing a stress-annotated Chinese dataset and an XLS-R-based Mandarin stress detector. Integrating this with the English EmphAssess system, we propose a novel objective metric for cross-lingual stress evaluation. Furthermore, we fine-tune CosyVoice3 to build a stress-aware S2ST system. Experiments demonstrate that our proposed S2ST architecture significantly outperforms existing systems in stress translation capability while maintaining competitive translation quality. Furthermore, our evaluation metric exhibits a strong correlation with human subjective judgments.

Benchmarking Speech-to-Speech Translation Models

Speech-to-speech translation (S2ST) has advanced rapidly, but offline evaluation lacks a unified protocol: studies report non-overlapping metric subsets, preventing direct comparisons. We introduce COMPASS, a unified and reproducible benchmarking framework integrating 46 metrics across eight dimensions, and deploy it on 1,248 model-language configurations from FLEURS and CVSS, spanning cascaded and end-to-end architectures over ten language pairs. Architectures exhibit complementary strengths: best-vs-worst gaps exceed 30% on naturalness and speaker preservation but remain within a few points on translation quality, so single-metric rankings systematically misrepresent system quality. Correlation filtering reduces 46 metrics to 10 per direction, with three axes requiring different metrics across X\toEN and EN\toX (e.g., TER/UTMOS vs. ChrF++/NISQA-MOS); these subsets preserve rankings (Spearman's ρ>0.80ρ>0.80) while cutting evaluation time by 2.5×\approx 2.5\times. Human validation across dubbing, podcasts, and medical domains shows standalone MOS predictors fail to predict listener preference, while top domain-specific metrics correlate with human judgment (ρ0.90ρ\geq 0.90). We release COMPASS as a foundation for domain-aware S2ST evaluation.

STEB: A Speech-to-Speech Translation Expressiveness Benchmark for Evaluating Beyond Translation Fidelity

Speech-to-speech translation (S2ST) should preserve not only lexical meaning, but also expressive attributes: emotion, scenario style (e.g., news reporting vs. dramatic dialogue), and nonverbal vocalizations (NVs). Moreover, collecting cross-lingual target speech that is both translation-faithful and expressively aligned with the source is difficult at scale, making reference-based evaluation impractical. We introduce STEB (Speech-to-Speech Translation Expressiveness Benchmark), a 32.6-hour Chinese--English benchmark that evaluates both standard dimensions (translation fidelity, speaker similarity, duration alignment) and expressiveness dimensions (emotion, scenario style, NV preservation). For expressiveness evaluation, STEB uses a caption-then-summarize framework that converts speech into structured expressive attributes and compares source and hypothesis attributes with an LLM judge. Human validation shows statistically significant correlations with listener judgments across all expressive dimensions. We evaluate six S2ST systems covering cascaded systems, end-to-end models, and speech large language models. Many systems, especially cascaded ones, achieve strong translation fidelity, but they still struggle with emotion preservation (best: 3.82/5) and NV preservation (best: 2.31/5). These results reveal a gap between semantic transfer and expressive transfer, identifying expressiveness preservation as an open challenge for S2ST. OpenSTBench: Beyond Semantic Evaluation for Speech Translation

Speech translation systems increasingly span speech-to-text translation (S2TT), speech-to-speech translation (S2ST), offline translation, and streaming generation, producing outputs that differ in modality, speech realization, and timing behavior. Existing evaluation practices assess important aspects such as translation quality, speech quality, and temporal quality, but these aspects are often evaluated under separate protocols, making it difficult to compare heterogeneous systems comprehensively. To address this gap, we present OpenSTBench, a unified multidimensional evaluation framework that organizes heterogeneous speech translation outputs into a shared evaluation format. OpenSTBench supports both S2TT and S2ST systems in offline and streaming settings, and jointly evaluates translation quality, speech quality, speaker preservation, emotion and paralinguistic fidelity, temporal consistency, and latency. Through experiments on representative speech translation systems, we show that systems with strong translation quality can still differ substantially in speech quality, as well as in temporal quality. OpenSTBench provides a reproducible protocol for analyzing these cross-dimensional differences and supporting application-oriented comparison of speech translation systems.
