When Web Agents Finish but Still Fail: Reproducible Triggers and Trace Diagnostics for Parallel Web Exploration

Abstract

Long-horizon web agents often fail in ways hidden by final-answer evaluation: they may visit useful pages, produce a well-formed answer, and terminate confidently while still missing fields, over-including unsupported items, or relying on stale evidence. We study these failures with Parallel WebBench, a parallel web-exploration benchmark containing 1,679 verified records: 350 manually curated parallel tasks and 1,329 reconstructed records with verified URL-based trajectories. We train WebExplorer-style agents with GRPO under human-only, balanced human-synthetic, and synthetic-heavy data mixtures. At 16k context and 16 interaction rounds, the best GRPO model improves completion over WebExplorer-8B from 50.7% to 96.0% and GPT-4.1-mini-judged element-wise F1 from 0.2489 to 0.4529, but binary accuracy remains far below completion. Trace-level analysis identifies three persistent failure modes: context-bound search loops, premature termination on partial answers, and synthesis collapse after relevant evidence has already been retrieved. These results show that synthetic-data GRPO reduces abstention and improves partial correctness, but leaves a completion-correctness gap that requires evidence-grounded coverage and synthesis diagnostics.

SearchAuditor: Auditing and Attributing Failures in Long-Horizon Search Agents

Deep search agents tackle challenging questions through long-horizon web interactions, a process that is both complex and fragile: small reasoning errors may propagate through long, noisy trajectories into fluent but incorrect answers. Diagnosing such failures is difficult, requiring the manual inspection of extremely long execution traces, which could be beyond human capacity. We therefore introduce SearchAuditBench, a benchmark that evaluates whether LLM auditors can localize, attribute, and repair these failures, thereby reducing the human burden. SearchAuditBench comprises 1,243 failed trajectories, averaging 73.1 messages and 65.1K tokens, collected from eight open-weight models on five deep-search benchmarks, each expert-annotated with the critical error step, a search-specific root cause, and a reference repair with grading rubrics. We further propose SearchAuditor, a multi-perspective auditing framework that effectively localizes, attributes, and repairs search-agent failures through evidence-grounded adjudication. Experimental results show that even the strongest baseline, when powered by a frontier model like GPT-5.5, attains only a 26.6% end-to-end pass rate. In contrast, our SearchAuditor consistently outperforms all baselines across different frontier models, achieving an end-to-end pass rate of 32.3%, and resuming failed runs with its repairs enables agents to better recover from errors.

Falsifiable Commitment Planning for Self-Correcting Web Agents

Long-horizon web agents often go off track before final failure: a trajectory can remain locally plausible even after the current state, reused skill, or plan assumption no longer supports the user instruction. Existing agents can plan, reflect, or reuse experience, but their plans rarely specify the evidence under which an active step should still be trusted. We propose FCPAgent, a falsifiable commitment planning framework for robust long-horizon web agents. FCPAgent represents each plan step as a Falsifiable Commitment Unit (FCU): a subgoal grounded in a reusable skill, together with confirming evidence, falsifying evidence, and a confidence score. Execution is organized as a plan-test-repair loop. The hybrid commitment testing module checks candidate actions before they modify the browser and checks observations after execution; for efficiency, it combines lightweight evidence matching with LLM-based diagnostic verification. When evidence falsifies a commitment, scope-aware repair localizes the contradiction to the execution, skill, or planning level and revises the smallest adequate part. On WebArena, FCPAgent achieves a 13.8% relative improvement in average success over the strongest baseline, with especially large gains on long-horizon tasks.

Do Web Agents Investigate Before They Decide?

Autonomous web agents are increasingly deployed in moderation and policy enforcement, where correct decisions often depend on evidence that is not immediately visible and must be actively investigated. Yet existing benchmarks largely assume task critical information is immediately accessible. They do not measure investigative competence: recognizing when visible context is insufficient, retrieving hidden evidence, and integrating it into a final decision. We introduce MIRAGE, a benchmark of 750 multi step decision tasks across three domains: Wikipedia Forensics, Shopping Admin adjudication, and Reddit Moderation. Each task has two layers: a visible surface context that often points to the wrong action, and a hidden context, reachable only by active investigation, that contains the decisive evidence. We decompose agent performance into Investigation, Reasoning, and Decision Accuracy, complemented by an Investigative Hallucination Rate. We evaluate eight LLM agents across two model generations. Three patterns emerge. First, agents reach relevant pages but rarely extract the decisive evidence on them. Second, procedural hints improve investigation but do not consistently improve decisions on Wikipedia tasks, where decisive evidence often contradicts surface impressions. Third, 12.6% of trajectories cite fabricated facts. We call these the Navigation Discovery Gap, Collapse under Contradiction, and Investigative Hallucination. These patterns persist across model scale, generation, and reasoning architecture.
