Abstract

Continuous semantic mapping allows autonomous robots to understand both the spatial structure and the semantic content of complex environments. However, most existing methods process the entire space, treat voxels as independent units, and do not keep the semantic labels consistent over time. This leads to high computational cost and reduced robustness in dynamic scenes. This paper proposes a semantic mapping method that brings spatial and temporal relationships into the semantic inference process. The method adjusts the inference range according to the local semantic uncertainty and fuses labels over time to improve map stability and computational efficiency. Experiments on the SemanticKITTI dataset show that the proposed method improves mapping accuracy by about 12% and reaches an mIoU of 54.92%, which is 13.18 percentage points higher than spatial-only mapping. These results show that spatiotemporal reasoning is effective for continuous semantic mapping in autonomous robotic systems.

Change-Robust Online Spatial-Semantic Topological Mapping

Autonomous robots require change-robust spatial-semantic reasoning: using spatial and semantic knowledge to decide where to go, how to get there, and where the robot is despite environmental change. Existing approaches typically attach semantics to SLAM-built metric maps, but these pipelines are brittle under appearance shifts and scene dynamics, where data association and relocalization degrade. We propose a Change-Robust Online Spatial-Semantic (CROSS) representation that replaces a globally consistent metric substrate with an online, pose-aware topological graph of RGB-D keyframes. The system explicitly reasons over perceptual ambiguity using sequential hypothesis testing in continuous SE(3). Our estimator maintains a bounded Gaussian-mixture belief over poses, enabling principled handling of loop closures and kidnapped-robot events. Experiments under severe appearance change, including real-robot object-goal navigation with lighting shifts and furniture rearrangement, demonstrate improved robustness over SLAM-based and topological baselines while remaining safe under perceptual aliasing.

CrossMaps: Confidence-Aware Open-Vocabulary Semantic Mapping for Rover Navigation

Rovers rely on perception to maintain spatial maps that encode both objects and sensor quality (e.g., range reliability, lighting artifacts, data density), guiding data fusion, embedding updates, and navigation under partial observability. To study these coupled perception-navigation processes, we present CrossMaps, a real-time confidence-aware open-vocabulary semantic mapping pipeline that constructs language-queryable maps from RGB-D data. Building on VLMaps-style approaches, CrossMaps integrates multi-scale CLIP embeddings with confidence-aware fusion and a dual-memory architecture consisting of Short-Term Memory (STM) and Long-Term Memory (LTM). The STM aggregates noisy visual observations using geometric, semantic, and temporal confidence cues, while confident and coherent cells are promoted to the LTM as persistent semantic landmarks. Designed for deployment with a Jetson Orin-powered UGV alongside SLAM, CrossMaps runs in real time and produces semantic heatmaps that can be queried with natural language to guide rover navigation.

FastMap: Real-Time Semantic Map Completion via Bitwise Masked Modeling

Semantic map completion, which predicts the layout of unobserved regions from partial observations, is a critical capability for indoor robot navigation. Existing approaches either rely on high-dimensional discrete codebooks that inflate memory, or on iterative diffusion sampling that is too slow for real-time use. We present FastMap, a lightweight two-stage framework for completing top-down categorical semantic maps. First, a lookup-free BitVAE exploits the inherently binary (one-hot) structure of semantic maps to compress each map patch into compact bitwise tokens, yielding a 0.41GB model that is 3.7 times smaller than the prior masked-modeling baseline. Second, a Masked AutoEncoder (MAE)-style transformer reconstructs missing tokens in a single forward pass at 0.011s/map. To support object goal navigation, we additionally introduce an object-aware masking strategy that masks the target category during training and conditions generation on a learnable category embedding, without adding inference cost. On the Gibson benchmark, FastMap achieves 34.10% mIoU and 45.84% semantic Success Rate (sSR), more than doubling the previous best (21.88%), and reaches 83.8% Success Rate on downstream ObjectNav, the highest among the compared navigation methods.
