Same question, different history: language, national identity, and credit in large language models

Abstract

Who invented the radio, Russia's Alexander Popov or Italy's Guglielmo Marconi? Was the telephone the achievement of Bell in the United States or Meucci in Italy? Does printing belong to China's Bi Sheng or Germany's Gutenberg? The answer depends not only on historical record but also on language and perspective. We analyse eleven widely used large language models across 21 disputed inventions and discoveries, evaluated in twelve languages and 75,896 responses. While models generally acknowledge that credit is contested, query language systematically affects which claimant is surfaced. Lower-status claimants are more likely to appear when questions are asked in their associated language, whereas dominant Anglophone figures remain stable across languages. These patterns persist after controlling for response length, model differences, historical prominence, and levels of national commemoration. Language thus acts as a switch that activates different national versions of the same history, producing systematically different national memories from the same question. We interpret this as evidence that large language models function as distributed systems of cultural memory, where language conditions which histories become visible, contributing to a computational form of banal nationalism.

When English Rewrites Local Knowledge: Global Narrative Dominance in Large Language Models

Large language models (LLMs) are widely used as cross-lingual knowledge interfaces. However, culturally grounded questions often reflect globally dominant narratives rather than local contexts. We study this failure mode as \textit{global narrative dominance} in Bangla, a low-resource cultural context. We introduce \texttt{CulturalNB}, a dataset of 717 manually curated Bengali cultural instances with parallel Bangla--English question--answer pairs and supporting evidence, metadata, and sociocultural annotations. Using question-only and evidence-based prompting, we evaluate nine state-of-the-art LLMs with human and two independent LLM judges across metrics for cross-lingual consistency, language anchoring, global substitution, institutional bias, and epistemic perspective coverage. Results show that questions asked in English systematically increase global substitution and institutional framing while reducing local perspective coverage. Local evidence improves factual consistency and perspective coverage, but does not eliminate language-induced epistemic shifts. These findings suggest that cultural failures in LLMs are not only missing-knowledge errors but also failures of grounding and narrative prioritization.

DEPART: DEcomposing PARiTy across Multilingual LLMs

Multilingual Large Language Models (mLLMs) leaderboards report per-language accuracy but rarely explain why disparities emerge, leaving systemic biases unattributed and offering practitioners no actionable levers. We first establish that these gaps are systematic rather than artifacts of sampling noise via distribution-free Friedman and Kruskal--Wallis tests, then introduce a two-step Bayesian hierarchical framework that decomposes multilingual performance variance into interpretable components. First, isolating the variance attributable to language identity, we show that observable language features (script, family, typological distance) explain Rling2=79%R^2_{\text{ling}} = 79\% of this variance on understanding tasks and 92%92\% on reasoning, with a model's internal representational similarity to English emerging as the dominant predictor across both task buckets. Second, decomposing the full (model×\timesbenchmark×\timeslanguage) cube, we find that NLU and reasoning have fundamentally divergent variance profiles: model identity dominates understanding (66.7%66.7\% of variance), whereas the benchmark×\timesmodel interaction dominates reasoning (46.3%46.3\%). Together these results recast multilingual evaluation from passive performance mapping into an explainable, diagnostic framework with concrete levers for targeting the root drivers of language disparity.

Lingua Franca or Probing Artifact? Rethinking Latent Language in Multilingual LLMs

Latent language identification is often used to argue that multilingual language models route computation through language-specific states, such as English pivots. However, existing probes infer latent language from different signals, such as the geometry of hidden states or what can be decoded from intermediate representations. Since such claims shape conclusions about how models share and route information across languages, we ask whether these probes measure the same phenomenon or expose distinct aspects of multilingual computation. We study this question across model families, training regimes, domains, tasks, checkpoints, and up to 27 languages. We find that identification probes systematically disagree: the GMM-based representation probe, which draws evidence from hidden state geometry, shows earlier cross-lingual mixing, whereas decoding-based probes, which rely on output-space decodability, retain sharper language-specific and more English-biased signals. These differences track model multilinguality and training progression, but are comparatively stable across domains. Our results suggest a more cautious interpretation of latent language identification, where current probes expose different aspects of multilingual processing, rather than directly revealing a single internal lingua franca.
