From Task-Guided Conversational Graphs to Goal-Oriented Dialogue Runtimes

Abstract

Graph and multi-agent orchestration frameworks make production large language model (LLM) workflows practical, but they do not by themselves solve conversational continuity when users maintain several interdependent objectives. This conceptual systems paper focuses on the high-complexity end of that design space, where goals can be suspended, resumed, revised, and invalidated by actions in other goals. We introduce the Goal-Oriented Dialogue Runtime (GODR), a framework-neutral design pattern that treats goals, task frames, lifecycle state, invalidation rules, and resumption contracts as first-class runtime objects while delegating bounded execution to graph runtimes, agents, tools, or application programming interfaces (APIs). GODR is not proposed as a replacement for workflow graphs in simple guided processes; it is intended for complex, multi-domain, interruptible conversations where objective continuity cannot be recovered reliably from agent identity, chat history, or execution-graph position alone. The paper formalizes the problem, proposes runtime objects and architecture-selection criteria, and frames evaluation as an agenda for future empirical validation rather than as a measured performance claim.

In-Context Prompting Obsoletes Agent Orchestration for Procedural Tasks

Agent orchestration frameworks -- LangGraph, CrewAI, Google ADK, OpenAI Agents SDK, and others -- place an external orchestrator above the LLM, tracking state and injecting routing instructions at every turn. We present a controlled comparison showing that for procedural tasks, this architecture is dominated by a simpler alternative: putting the entire procedure in the system prompt and letting the model self-orchestrate. Across three domains -- travel booking (14 nodes), Zoom technical support (14 nodes), and insurance claims processing (55 nodes) -- we evaluate 200 conversations per condition using LLM-as-judge scoring on five quality criteria. The in-context approach scores 4.53--5.00 on a 5-point scale while a LangGraph orchestrator using the same model scores 4.17--4.84. The orchestrated system fails on 24% of travel, 9% of Zoom, and 17% of insurance conversations, compared to 11.5%, 0.5%, and 5% for the in-context baseline. While external orchestration may have been necessary for earlier models, advances in frontier model capabilities have made it unnecessary for multi-turn conversations following a defined procedure.

Context: Proactive Goal-Directed Intelligence via Composable Sandboxed Programs, Declarative Wiring, and Structured Interaction

We present Context, the intelligence layer of the Magarshak Architecture, which replaces reactive query-response chatbots with proactive goal-directed agents that advance shared tasks without waiting for user prompts. The architecture rests on three mutually reinforcing mechanisms. Write-time context assembly precomputes enriched typed attributes via Groker agents, assembling interaction context as a deterministic pure function of graph state; context blocks are byte-identical across turns between semantic changes, enabling near-100% KV-cache reuse. Composable sandboxed wisdom programs form a governed library of LM-generated imperative programs declaratively wired to goal types via typed stream relations, composed via phase ordering, and executed at interaction time without further LM calls. Proactive goal stream state machines drive conversations toward terminal states by inspecting graph state and emitting structured interaction content (option arrays, governance affordances, clarification prompts) without awaiting user input. We prove six formal results: the Context Stability Theorem, bounding per-turn LM cost as a function of semantic change rate; a Program Composition Correctness Theorem; a Declarative Wiring Soundness Theorem; the Proactive Dominance Theorem, proving proactive agents weakly dominate reactive agents on expected turns-to-terminal-state; Coordination Overhead Elimination and Quality Preservation, establishing Pareto improvements in multi-participant goal chats; and a Cross-Platform Vote Consistency Theorem. Implemented in the open-source Qbix / Safebox / Safebots stack.

An Auditable Symbolic-RAG-Generative AI Architecture for Goal-Oriented Conversation Orchestration

Goal-oriented conversational systems must answer factual questions, understand visitor-provided information, and advance business objectives without becoming rigid questionnaires. This paper proposes a Symbolic-RAG-Generative architecture centered on the Goal-oriented Retrieval-Augmented Conversation Engine (GRACE). An instruction-constrained Business Goal Compiler transforms business intent into an immutable objective set, normalized priority vector, canonical questions, and initial state vector. At runtime, GRACE receives the complete conversation history, latest visitor message, current state, and grounded answer generated by a separate RAG component. It updates completion only from visitor-authored evidence and selects one contextually modulated follow-up. The core policy maximizes expected business progress subject to a minimum visitor-utility constraint. We formalize the state, monotonic transitions, source separation, question modulation, and constrained policy; present the reference architecture; and define an evaluation comprising 24 English real-estate and 10 Spanish professional-cleaning conversations, totaling 119 protocol-defined visitor turns. Across both domains, GRACE achieves 84.9% exact state-transition accuracy, 91.6% evidence precision, 89.6% evidence recall, 100% monotonicity, and 94.1% terminal-state accuracy. The evaluation establishes compelling symbolic-state performance across standard, multi-goal, RAG-detour, validation, refusal, and robustness scenarios.
