Auditing Framing-Sensitive Behavioral Instability in Large Language Models for Mental Health Interactions

Abstract

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly being integrated into mental health support tools and other psychologically sensitive conversational applications. In such settings, behavioral stability and consistency are important for trustworthy human-AI interaction. However, semantically similar concerns can be presented through different contextual framings, potentially eliciting different model responses. Such framing-sensitive variability may challenge user expectations regarding system behavior and complicate the assessment of AI reliability. While prior studies have primarily examined such effects at the behavioral level, less is known about how framing-related variation is reflected in the internal representations of aligned language models. In this work, we investigate these effects using controlled matched prompts spanning multiple contextual framing conditions across several instruction-tuned model families. Across architectures, framing systematically alters interpretive response tendencies. Layer-wise probing analyses show that behavior-associated information remains decodable throughout transformer depth, with architecture-dependent variation in decoding strength. Moreover, held-out framing probes remained consistently above chance across architectures despite strong lexical baselines. Activation steering experiments further suggest that framing-associated representational directions can partially modulate downstream behavioral outcomes. Finally, these findings indicate that robustness to contextual variation may represent an important consideration when evaluating the consistency and trustworthiness of conversational AI systems deployed in mental-health-oriented interactions.

Framing Matters: Addressing Framing Sensitivity in Decision-Making through Behaviorally-Grounded Value Alignment

Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly deployed in high-stakes decision-making settings such as legal reasoning, where consistency under factually equivalent inputs is critical. However, we find that fact-preserved but differently framed inputs can significantly destabilize LLM decisions. To systematically investigate this problem, we introduce Fragile, a large-scale benchmark that isolates fact-preserving semantic framing across three controlled dimensions: value-tinted narration, temporal slice, and narrative vividness. Our experiments reveal a high susceptibility of LLMs to framing, with an average decision flip rate of 28.6%. We find that simple prior prompt-level and activation-level interventions not only fail to suppress framing sensitivity but actively amplify it. We therefore propose Valign, a representation-level method that explicitly targets these framing dimensions by anchoring decisions to a stable value prior, steering hidden states toward the model's value-consistent direction, and projecting out temporal-vividness-sensitive directions from the model's hidden states. Valign consistently reduces framing-induced decision flips, demonstrating that robust mitigation requires directly targeting the internal pathways in which framing operates.

Confirming Our Biases? Evaluating the Capabilities, Risks, and Societal Impact of Large Language Models

It is well established that large language models (LLMs) are sensitive to prompt framing, reflecting patterns in their training data or prior prompts. In this study, we investigate the extent to which LLMs reinforce users biases expressed in the prompts and examine the boundary between implicit framing effects and explicit prompt manipulation. Specifically, we evaluate how susceptible LLMs are to direct and suggestive prompts that encourage models to support or challenge particular positions. We evaluate six LLMs using 160 distinct prompts spanning ten topics across opinion-based and factual domains. The prompts systematically vary in prompting strategy, support versus challenge instructions, prompt polarity, users' expressed beliefs, and topic domain, spanning both opinion-based and factual questions. Our results show that LLMs systematically adapt their responses to align with prompt framing, even in factual contexts. This suggests that prompt framing can outweigh factual consistency in model responses. Overall, our findings delineate the extent and boundaries of LLM manipulability. Furthermore, the results imply that LLMs can reinforce subtle user biases and are susceptible to explicit prompt manipulation even in domains where responses should remain factually stable.

Is This Your Final Answer? Cross-Contextual Consistency as a Measure of LLM Credibility

Large language models (LLMs) are powerful black-box systems, making it difficult to discern whether their answers reflect stable internal beliefs or superficial pattern matching. We identify cross-contextual consistency as an underutilized behavioral property of LLMs: a credible answer should remain stable when the same task is placed under topic-aligned, content-neutral contextual variation. Building on this intuition, we operationalize Cross-Contextual Consistency (C3) by comparing model generations under original and perturbed prompts. Across 26 models and six benchmarks spanning reasoning, factuality, and code generation, we find that answers with smaller cross-contextual shifts are more likely to be correct or factual. We demonstrate that C3 provides a complementary axis of evaluation and can serve as a benchmark usefulness diagnostic, identifying which portions of a benchmark remain informative even when aggregated scores are widely considered "saturate".
