EmoteGPT: 3D Human Facial Expressions from Natural Language Descriptions

Abstract

Precise control of 3D facial expressions from text is crucial for virtual avatars, animation, and human-computer interaction, yet existing text-to-3D methods jointly generate identity, expression, and texture, making fine-grained expression control difficult. We instead formulate text-driven expression synthesis as a regression problem in the disentangled parameter space of a 3D Morphable Model (3DMM). This setting, however, requires paired data linking detailed language to precise expression parameters, which are missing from existing resources. To fill this gap, we introduce Txt2Emote, a benchmark of diverse 3D facial expressions with fine-grained textual annotations obtained from GPT-4o and a high-fidelity face tracker, providing both explicit descriptions detailing facial features and implicit descriptions referencing the situational context behind the expression. Leveraging this dataset, we present EmoteGPT, a text-to-3D expression framework based on a Multimodal Large Language Model (MLLM) with a dedicated <Expr> token to semantically ground expression representations, which are then decoded into 3DMM parameters. We further improve EmoteGPT by augmenting training with large-scale image-to-3DMM data, enabling it to surpass state-of-the-art text-to-3D face synthesis methods on emotion recognition metrics and in perceived expressiveness. Integrated into avatar pipelines, our method enables photorealistic and stylized 3D avatars, as well as expressive 3D-consistent 2D face synthesis from textual input.

Ex-Omni: Enabling 3D Facial Animation Generation for Omni-modal Large Language Models

Omni-modal large language models (OLLMs) aim to unify multimodal understanding and generation, yet extending them to jointly produce speech and 3D facial animation remains largely underexplored. A key challenge is the mismatch between the discrete semantic reasoning of LLMs and the dense temporal dynamics required for 3D facial motion. We propose Expressive Omni (Ex-Omni), a framework that augments OLLMs with speech-accompanied 3D facial animation. Ex-Omni decouples semantic reasoning from temporal generation through a speech-unit generator with blendshape co-supervision and a non-autoregressive blendshape decoder, where speech units provide temporal scaffolding and hidden speech representations carry facially relevant cues. We further introduce a token-as-query gated fusion (TQGF) interface for controlled semantic injection, as well as InstructS2SF-1200K, a 1.2M-sample weakly supervised dataset for speech-accompanied facial animation. Extensive experiments show that Ex-Omni retains competitive speech QA capability while natively generating coordinated text, speech, and 3D facial animation, and approaches the Audio2Face-3D teacher cascade in synchronization and human preference.

EmoZone-Talker: Regional Semantic Control of Audio-Driven 3DGS Talking Heads via Facial Action Units

3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has shown strong potential for high-fidelity talking head synthesis. However, enabling fine-grained, interpretable, and editable facial expression control remains fundamentally challenging due to intrinsic conflicts between speech-driven facial dynamics and explicit expression signals. Existing methods rely on implicit multimodal fusion, leading to spatial entanglement and temporal instability. We present EmoZone-Talker, a novel framework that reformulates audio-driven facial animation as a structured spatial-temporal coordination problem under cross-modal conflicts. Our approach introduces an explicit spatial disentanglement and temporal dynamics modeling of facial motion. Specifically, we propose Synergy Zones with Prioritized Attention Bias (SZ-PAB) to explicitly decouple modality contributions via region-wise constraints guided by anatomical priors, and a Channel-Independent Temporal AU Encoder (CIT-AE) to model temporally coherent AU dynamics. By integrating these representations into 3D Gaussian deformation, EmoZone-Talker enables precise and interpretable control over facial expressions. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method improves expression controllability and realism, with notable gains in upper-face accuracy and temporal coherence, while preserving high rendering quality and accurate lip synchronization. Code will be publicly released to facilitate reproducibility and further research.

RAGMesh with FaME-G2E: Long-Form Text-Driven 3D Face Generation and Editing

Text-driven 3D face generation and editing remains challenging due to the difficulty of translating long-form descriptions into fine-grained facial geometry. Existing methods primarily align global textual semantics with facial structures but often struggle to capture subtle local deformations, such as eyebrow tension, cheek contraction, and asymmetric mouth motions, resulting in limited geometric fidelity and editing precision. To facilitate fine-grained text-driven facial modeling, we first construct FaME-G2E, a large-scale multimodal dataset containing detailed text--mesh annotations and paired text--blendshape samples for unified 3D facial generation and editing. Based on this dataset, we propose RAGMesh, a retrieval-augmented framework that leverages text-correlated geometric priors to improve high-fidelity facial synthesis and editing. Specifically, the Multi-Scale Retrieval Fusion (MSRF) module retrieves semantically consistent global and regional facial priors and fuses them in the blendshape space, suppressing conflicting local deformations while preserving coherent deformation patterns. Furthermore, we introduce Adaptive RAG-guided Supervision (AdaRAGS), a region-aware constraint that explicitly aligns textual semantics with corresponding facial regions, enhancing regional controllability and editing accuracy. Extensive experiments on FaME-G2E demonstrate that RAGMesh achieves superior performance over state-of-the-art methods in local geometric accuracy, text-guided controllability, regional editing precision, and inference efficiency.
