Cross-Trajectory Chimera Interventions Reveal Dissociable Roles of Weight Magnitude and Direction in Grokking

Abstract

Which properties of a partially trained network are causally portable to a different, independently trained network? Single-trajectory interventions show necessity within one run, not portability across runs. We introduce cross-trajectory chimera interventions: given two runs from different seeds, we split each weight vector into a norm and a unit direction, recombine one run's norm with the other's direction, and continue training. On two modular-arithmetic tasks that grok, the components dissociate. Direction carries a transferable, donor-specific circuit identity: implanting a donor's direction at the recipient's norm drives the run to the donor's circuit in 40/40 cases, while an angle-matched random control yields no shift. The transfer is threshold-like, and its location is predicted by the recipient's norm, separating perfectly by norm class over all 20 pairs (joint permutation probability 1.9e-4). Norm carries only a modest, distributed delay effect and no identity signal. An adaptive bisection procedure localizes the threshold to +/-1/64. Direction indexes which solution a trajectory approaches; norm governs how susceptible that identity is to being overwritten.

Beyond Embedding Transfer: Component Roles in Grokking Transfer and Stability

Warm-start transfer can make algorithmic tasks generalize rapidly, yet it is unclear which model components provide the gain and whether that gain remains stable under continued optimization. We study cross-operator transfer on modular arithmetic and separate efficacy (early velocity) from stability (post-reach drawdown). In a scale-matched 108-run battery across 12 seed blocks (96-run 2^3 factorial plus 12-run scale control), transferring internal attention/MLP weights (B) alongside token embeddings and readout (E+U) improves early accuracy by 5.46 pp (Holm p=0.0039) and cuts confirmation latency by 558 steps (Holm p=0.0088). While readout plus internal-block transfer satisfies the pre-specified +/-500-step latency equivalence criterion in 1-layer models (TOST p=0.0011, though Full is faster in 11/12 paired seeds), a prospective 2-layer replication confirms the internal-block advantage (12/12 seeds, +704.67 integral units, p=4.88x10^-4) while revealing an architectural boundary: omitting donor embeddings falls 4475.6 units below Full, outside the +/-250-unit margin. Continued target training frequently triggers severe post-grokking relapse. Freezing transferred representation carriers (E, U) nearly eliminates offline relapse (19.40% -> 0.07%, Holm p=0.005859). Online validation-triggered gating slashes True Max Drawdown from 22.06% to 0.60% on 2a+b (p=0.000488), with prospective confirmations extending protection across affine, nonlinear quadratic, and 2-layer targets (10.94-23.47 pp reductions), distinguishing continual stabilization from static early stopping. In non-abelian S_5, unshielded transfer surges transiently (95.4% peak), but a prospective shielding cohort yields no confirmed benefit (+0.15 +/- 1.14 pp). These results establish a component-level dissociation between transfer acceleration and trajectory stability, and expose the empirical boundaries of parameter shielding.

State Transfer Reveals Reuse in Controlled Routing

Prompt-based interventions can change model behavior, but trained success alone does not identify where the behaviorally relevant state is represented. We study this question in controlled routing tasks using interfaces chosen on support data, held-out query evaluation, and matched necessity, sufficiency, and wrong-interface controls. On GPT-2 triop, an early interface supports exact transfer under these tests. On GPT-2 add/sub, zero-retrain compiled transfer at the fixed interface recovers most of donor routing accuracy, while trainable prompt slots can relearn the same behavior at several other positions only after additional support examples and optimization. These results distinguish fixed-interface reuse from prompt relocation in a setting where the two can be tested directly. Qwen routing provides a cross-architecture consistency check for the same matched-interface pattern at the operator token, although donor-specific identity on the local V-path remains unresolved. Generation and reasoning branches are used to map scope: they show broader transport or weaker controller identifiability once control depends on longer trajectories or harder selection. In controlled routing, fixed-interface transfer is therefore stronger evidence of reuse than trained prompt success alone.

Beyond Coordinate Gauge: An Audited Protocol for Detecting Donor-Specific Functional Fingerprints after Neural Collapse

Independently trained neural networks have no shared neuron-index reference frame, so comparing them requires accounting for coordinate freedom. Neural Collapse sharpens this problem: networks converge toward a shared, low-dimensional geometry, raising the question of whether trajectory-specific functional variation remains distinguishable after convergence. We distinguish three claims - detectability, transplantability, and causal persistence - and address the first. Using five independently trained networks reconstructing Neural Collapse on MNIST, we apply a verified affine-correct alignment mapping donor heads into recipient coordinates. Donor-specific functional fingerprints remain distinguishable after recipient-level baseline correction: all 20 ordered donor-recipient pairs are correctly identified, with an exact permutation p=0.0083, robust to a leakage audit. These findings establish detectability under the test used here, but not transplantability or causal persistence. The study shows how alignment, ambiguity diagnostics, and leakage control combine to test cross-network variation in a controlled setting; whether this generalizes beyond it is open.
