CAMMAR: Culture-Aware Matryoshka for Metaphorical Arabic Representations

Abstract

Metaphor in Arabic is a culturally grounded mechanism for constructing meaning, encoding cultural knowledge that shapes interpretation. Yet current Arabic language models typically collapse lexical, cultural, and metaphorical information into a single representational space, a phenomenon we term "semantic smearing". We introduce CAMMAR (Culture-Aware Matryoshka for Metaphorical Arabic Representations), a representation learning framework that organizes meaning into nested lexical, cultural, and metaphorical embedding subspaces through a staged semantic curriculum. The design implements compositional principles of Al-Jurjani's theory of nazum, modeling figurative meaning as compositionally grounded in prior semantic relations, and yields a training-free geometric measure of metaphoricity based on the distance between lexical and metaphorical representations. Evaluated on a new span-annotated Arabic metaphor set as word-matched figurative/literal pairs, the geometric readout detects metaphor well above chance when the inter-layer geometry is shaped by paired supervision (AUC up to 0.84; figurative outscores its literal counterpart for the same word in 82.6% of pairs), but sits at chance under an unsupervised domain contrast alone, a clean separation between a legible-under-supervision regime and a non-emergent one. A controlled ablation shows that grounding the lexical layer in morphological roots gives a small but consistent gain, an effect absent from direct probing that reflects the layer's quality as a measurement anchor. We will release the datasets, cultural concept inventory, and code upon acceptance.

AraMIP: Extending MIPVU Towards Metaphor Identification in Arabic

Metaphor research has gained increasing attention due to its relevance to linguistic creativity, language use, cognitive processes, and related areas. While many efforts have been devoted to metaphor identification and annotation in English and other languages, Arabic remains under-resourced in this area. In this work, we propose the Arabic Metaphor Identification Procedure (AraMIP), a novel guideline for Arabic metaphor annotation. AraMIP builds on the widely used Metaphor Identification Procedure Vrije Universiteit (MIPVU) framework, incorporating adaptations that accounts for the language-specific properties of Arabic. We distinguish three major types of Arabic figurative language: Isti'ara (metaphor), kinaya (metonymy/indirect expression), and tashbih (simile), and annotate a pilot dataset of 300 sentences (5277 words). Our analysis reveals key challenges specific to Arabic, including morphological complexity, inconsistencies in dictionary sense ordering, and the absence of standardized contextual materials for annotators. This work contributes a first step toward standardized Arabic figurative instances and facilitates the development of larger annotated resources, thereby supporting future research on figurative language in Arabic.

Benchmarking Frontier LLMs on Arabic Cultural and Sociolinguistic Knowledge: A Cross-Evaluation Framework with Human SME Ground Truth

The cost of human expert evaluation is a principal bottleneck to deploying language models in specialized, high-stakes domains. This is particularly acute for Arabic sociolinguistic knowledge: credible grading requires not only linguistic fluency but deep cultural familiarity that cannot be approximated by surface-level metrics. We address this with a cross-evaluation framework instantiated on two underrepresented Arabic dialect communities: Egyptian and Iraqi Arabic. We contribute 103 validated prompt-rubric pairs (70 Egyptian, 33 Iraqi; 53 Cultural, 50 Linguistic), authored and graded by native-speaker SMEs using penalty-weighted rubrics distinguishing positive content requirements from answer-specific negative error criteria. Three frontier LLMs serve as target models (graded by human SMEs across 302 unique prompt-response pairs), while five frontier LLMs serve as automated judges enforcing a provider-level self-evaluation guard. A dual-metric scheme combining Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD) with Signed Mean Error separates directional grading bias from symmetric noise. Across 1,307 judge evaluations: GPT-5.4 is the most reliable judge (MADj = 10.21 pp, Signed Error = -1.12%); four of five judges show systematic leniency (+2.01% to +6.56%); Cultural tasks are harder to grade than Linguistic tasks for all judges (MAD gap 1.83-4.78 pp); and models substantially outperform on Egyptian prompts compared to Iraqi prompts. However, given leniency differences between Iraqi and Egyptian SMEs, we cannot solely attribute this gap to model knowledge. We therefore emphasize findings that do not assume identical leniency across human graders. Across all samples, implicit cultural reasoning -- requiring models to simulate native-speaker judgment rather than rely on lexical verification -- emerges as the primary failure mode for automated grading across all judge models.

BanglaMemeX: Advancing Cultural Metaphoric Image Interpretation in Bangla with a Multimodal Explainable Dataset

Vision Language Models have achieved strong performance on multimodal benchmarks, yet their ability to reason about culturally grounded and metaphor-rich content remains insufficiently studied. Internet memes present a challenging setting where meaning emerges from implicit interactions between image, overlaid text, sarcasm, and shared socio-cultural knowledge rather than literal visual recognition. This challenge is amplified in low-resource languages such as Bangla, where code-mixing, stylized scripts, and culturally specific symbolism introduce substantial distribution shift. In this work, we introduce BanglaMemeX, a culturally grounded multimodal benchmark comprising 3,000 Bangla memes annotated with multi-dimensional labels (humor, sarcasm, offensiveness, motivational intent, and overall sentiment) and human-written explanations that explicitly describe textual and visual metaphors. We systematically evaluate modern VLMs on both classification and explanation generation, revealing that current models struggle to interpret implicit cultural cues despite reasonable surface-level accuracy. Our results highlight the need for culturally-aware multimodal systems capable of grounded reasoning under linguistic and cultural distribution shift.
