Abstract

Multimodal agentic search systems increasingly rely on external tools to answer knowledge-intensive visual questions. However, existing evaluations mainly focus on final-answer accuracy and may miss failures in the search trajectory. In this work, we study such hidden reliability issues as silent failures. We introduce a six-category taxonomy covering modality shortcuts, phantom grounding, wrong-evidence-right-answer cases, over-retrieval laundering, cross-modal contradiction, and provenance hallucination. Based on this taxonomy, we build a trajectory-level diagnostic pipeline that evaluates both answer correctness and evidence-grounding quality under a unified ReAct-style scaffold. Experiments on MMSearch-Plus trajectories across four frontier multimodal models show that surface accuracy consistently overestimates true trajectory-level correctness. We further use cross-judge validation, blank-image stress tests, and tool ablations to show that silent failures are capability-dependent and often shift rather than disappear. WeAgent-MMSearch: Native Text-Vision Interaction for Multimodal Search Agents

Multimodal search agents extend parametric knowledge with newly emerging and long-tail evidence from the open web. Yet many existing agentic search environments often expose retrieved evidence only as text and omit tool-returned images from subsequent context, reducing visually grounded trajectories to text-only reasoning. Long-horizon interaction also compounds tool-call, response-length, timeout, and budget failures, which can discard salvageable trajectories, waste rollout computation, and disturb policy updates. To address these issues, we introduce WeAgent-Harness, a multimodal agentic harness that supports native text-vision interaction and runtime recovery. Retrieved images receive persistent disk references, allowing the model to inspect, process, and cite them throughout the trajectory. Based on this harness, we develop WeAgent-MMSearch, an integrated system spanning data construction, agentic post-training, and multimodal rollout. For data construction, a strong MLLM uses WeAgent-Harness to discover, synthesize, and verify MMSearch-style tasks and collect expert trajectories. During post-training, our Failure-Aware GSPO (FA-GSPO) recovers salvageable abnormal rollouts and filters invalid ones to improve bounded multimodal planning and search. We also introduce VisTarget-Bench, a 150-task human-verified benchmark that pairs each question with a held-out target image, distinguishing image-retrieval failures from visual-perception failures. Evaluation on VisTarget-Bench and seven public benchmarks shows that agentic post-training improves the average score by 19.22 points, enabling our model to outperform similarly sized open-source models and rival models with roughly ten times its parameter count.

SimpleSearch-VL: A Simple Recipe for Multimodal Agentic Deep Search

We present SimpleSearch-VL, an efficient, reliable, and practical framework for multimodal agentic search. Its core idea is to improve the agent's own search-and-verification process rather than scaling data, tools, or auxiliary model components. For efficiency, Factorized Adaptive Rollout (FAR) improves sampling efficiency by forming more informative training groups while using redundant samples to mitigate long-tail latency and expose hard samples. For reliability, SimpleSearch-VL performs evidence-verified reasoning, explicitly using chain-of-thought verification to assess the relevance of retrieved visual and textual cues to the original context. For practicality, SimpleSearch-VL keeps a lightweight tool interface and performs webpage self-summary within the agent, requiring no additional external dependencies. With only 5K supervised tool-interleaved trajectories and 2K RL data, SimpleSearch-VL improves Qwen3-VL agentic baselines by 15.8 and 16.0 average points for the 8B and 30B-A3B variants, respectively. The SimpleSearch-VL-30B-A3B model further achieves performance competitive with agentic Gemini-3-Pro.

InterLV-Search: Benchmarking Interleaved Multimodal Agentic Search

Existing benchmarks for multimodal agentic search evaluate multimodal search and visual browsing, but visual evidence is either confined to the input or treated as an answer endpoint rather than part of an interleaved search trajectory. We introduce \textbf{InterLV-Search}, a benchmark for Interleaved Language-Vision Agentic Search, in which textual and visual evidence is repeatedly used to condition later search. It contains 2,061 examples across three levels: active visual evidence seeking, controlled offline interleaved multimodal search, and open-web interleaved multimodal search. Beyond existing benchmarks, it also includes multimodal multi-branch samples that involve comparison between multiple entities during the evidence search. We construct Level 1 and Level 2 with automated pipelines and Level 3 with a machine-led, human-supervised open-web pipeline. We further provide InterLV-Agent for standardized tool use, trajectory logging, and evaluation. Experiments on proprietary and open-source multimodal agents show that current systems remain far from solving interleaved multimodal search, with the best model below 50% overall accuracy, highlighting challenges in visual evidence seeking, search control, and multimodal evidence integration.
