Decentralized Scalable Exploration via Emergent Adaptive Lévy Walks on Minimal-Sensing Platforms

Authors: Wai Lun LeongTeo Swee Huat Rodney

Abstract

Efficient autonomous exploration with palm-sized nano-UAVs remains challenging due to severe limitations in sensing, computation, and flight endurance. We present a lightweight sensor-driven Lévy walk (SDLW) controller for aerial robots weighing under 50 grams and equipped with sparse local sensing. The method combines discrete Lévy step-length sampling with a sensor-reactive heading policy using directional range measurements. Each robot independently samples its Lévy exponent from a uniform prior to diversify exploration without inter-robot communication for exploration control. Each robot then selects headings using a von Mises distribution that biases motion toward open directions while preserving superdiffusive exploration properties. The controller operates at constant computational cost, enabling scalable multi-UAV exploration. Simulation results show coverage improvements of 79.6% in open arenas, 43.1% in rooms-and-corridors layouts, and 13.6% in cluttered environments, with collision reductions of 13.0%, 7.1%, and 1.4%, respectively, relative to a uniform-heading Lévy walk baseline. This work provides a practical framework for scalable multi-robot exploration on minimal-sensing, resource-constrained nano-UAVs.

Dec-MARVEL: Decentralized Multi-Agent Exploration without Communication under Budget Constraints

Multi-UAV exploration is often constrained by unreliable communication, limited field-of-view sensing (e.g., lightweight onboard camera), and finite travel budgets that require each robot to reserve enough budget to return to its base. We present Dec-MARVEL, a decentralized budget-aware exploration framework for communication-free teams with directional sensing. Rather than exchanging maps, goals, or messages, each robot coordinates through its incidental observations: any teammate trajectory within its field of view serves as a coordination signal. A graph-attention actor fuses local frontier geometry, teammate motion, and budget features to select return-feasible waypoint-heading actions. The actor is trained with phase-conditioned critics, a training-only task-oriented privileged critic, and a mixture-based budget curriculum. Across 900 held-out trials spanning three team sizes (2, 4, 8 robots) and three travel budgets (720, 800, 1024 meters) against four baselines, Dec-MARVEL achieves the highest or tied-highest exploration rate and lowest sensing overlap across all nine team-size budget configurations. Under our tightest 720m budget, it reaches 53%, 94%, and 100% success for 2, 4, and 8 robots, versus 37%, 83%, and 99% for the strongest baseline. Physical-robot experiments demonstrate successful sim-to-real transfer and real-world deployment of Dec-MARVEL.

Semantic-Aware Autonomous Exploration for UAVs in Unknown Indoor Environments

Autonomous exploration in unknown environments requires unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to efficiently generate informative trajectories while simultaneously constructing accurate maps. Although many existing exploration methods rely on geometric information, they often lack semantic awareness, resulting in suboptimal exploration efficiency and limited environmental understanding. To address this limitation, this paper proposes a semantic-aware exploration framework that adds semantic information to a roadmap-based exploration strategy. The proposed method builds on the Dynamic Exploration Planner (DEP), which incrementally constructs a Probabilistic Roadmap (PRM), and augments this roadmap with a semantic layer. A semantic reward function is introduced to prioritize regions containing meaningful objects and structures, enabling the UAV to focus on areas with higher information value. Furthermore, the roadmap is continuously updated to support efficient frontier selection and path planning during exploration. The proposed framework is implemented in ROS Noetic and Gazebo using an RGB-D sensor for simultaneous acquisition of geometric and semantic information. Experimental results in multiple simulated environments demonstrate that the proposed approach achieves exploration coverage rates between 90% and 94% while reducing exploration time and travel distance compared with conventional geometry-based exploration methods.

Palm-sized Omnidirectional Vision-Based UAV Exploration with Sparse Topological Map Guidance

Classic exploration methods often rely on dense occupancy maps or high-resolution point clouds for frontier detection and path planning, resulting in substantial memory consumption and computational overhead. Moreover, micro UAVs under size, weight, and power (SWaP) constraints are not practical to be equipped with sensors like LiDAR to obtain accurate environmental geometric measurements. This paper presents a lightweight autonomous exploration system that leverages omnidirectional vision and sparse topological map guidance. Specifically, we utilize a multi-fisheye camera setup to achieve omnidirectional Field of View (FoV) and perform depth estimation. To address the limited depth estimation accuracy, frontiers are represented as potential unexplored regions characterized by topological nodes instead of explicit boundaries, enabling efficient identification of frontier regions without maintaining occupancy grids or global point clouds. Unlike classic dense representations, our approach abstracts the environment using a sparse topological map composed of key nodes and their descriptors, reducing memory consumption and computational demands. Global path planning is performed directly on the sparse graph. The proposed method is validated in both simulation and on a palm-sized vision-based UAV with an 11 cm wheelbase and a 400 g weight in real-world experiments, demonstrating that our method can achieve efficient exploration with extremely low computational consumption.
