ALIVE: Warnings Before Exclusion in Budgeted Multi-Source Learning

Abstract

A routing decision can be revised at the next transaction, but a latched source exclusion persists across later decisions. We ask what evidence should authorize these unequal-persistence actions when finite-population auditing and learning share a budget. ALIVE (Action-Layered Intervention via Evidence) is an auditable control layer: one randomized without-replacement prefix supplies cached evidence, heuristic warnings drive non-latching floor-bounded routing, and only two fresh simultaneous certificate separations may latch an exclusion request subject to capacity-feasible activation. Conditional on fixed support and labels under an ideal uniform audit permutation, any predictable controller preserving this interface inherits an anytime familywise bound of δon acting against a source that fails the pre-fixed absolute or relative strict-majority-disagreement predicate. With a published known-size, all-strict-majority PPR engine, median evidence count fell from 304 to 96 identities in e40 and from 171 to 62 in e60, while both engines used 48 in e80. In the matched CIFAR controller, the persistent-action layer added +0.1935 accuracy-AUBC percentage points over routing-only in all ten paired seed clusters. The +0.1954-point full-system contrast against CBR was also positive but did not meet the predeclared multiplicity-adjusted criterion (conditional Holm-adjusted sign-flip reference value =.097656). On a fixed natural panel, exploratory PPR used a median closure prefix of 95 rather than 105 for exploratory Serfling/FPC, but still exposed 88.0% of the panel and had no downstream task. Together these results map a restraint--power--cost--utility boundary: the action contract controls a defined persistent decision, while net value depends on evidence margin, audit cost, and budget regime.

When Validation Stops Learning: Auditing Update Admission for Continual Embodied Agents

Independent evaluation can reject harmful policy updates yet also prevent useful continual learning. We argue that update admission must be assessed through both error control and retained learning opportunities at a stated interaction budget. We identify a concrete failure: a range-based confidence gate cannot certify unchanged old-task behavior within otherwise substantial budgets. A standard paired-binomial construction reduces this burden when outcome disagreements are rare. We also specify certified historical-reference promotion and a round-level missed-opportunity metric. In a constructed one-step pushing diagnostic with 32 seeds, fresh paired checks admit 31.6% of a common update stream at 2,000 episodes per stage, versus zero for the range-based gate; unconditional replay nevertheless learns better in closed-loop runs. A separate learned-dynamics stress test distinguishes model bias from feedback-selection error. The contribution is an admission-audit protocol with analytical and synthetic evidence; physical-robot and VLA validation remain open.

Signed Compression Progress on a Sealed Audit is Goodhart-Resistant

Compression progress is a long-standing proposal for intrinsic motivation: reward an agent when its world model becomes better at predicting or compressing experience. The folk claim is that this reward is "credible" because it is paid only for learning. We make this precise and prove it. If intrinsic reward is the signed decrease of a fixed sealed-audit loss, r_t = E(theta_{t-1}) - E(theta_t), then cumulative reward telescopes exactly to endpoint audit improvement, so no policy can push reward up indefinitely while true audit performance stagnates or degrades. For finite audit panels the same result holds with a sharp false-positive budget: cumulative empirical reward is at most true audit improvement plus 2 Delta_n(F, delta), the uniform audit deviation of the model class. This is horizon-free: adaptivity over time costs nothing once the sealed panel uniformly controls the class. The theorem also identifies the failure modes: the guarantee disappears if progress is clipped, scored on the agent's own stream, exposed to a high-capacity model on a reusable panel, or applied to a neural class that makes Delta_n vacuous. We give a Lean 4 mechanization of the structural core (telescoping, the finite-audit bound, finite Gibbs, and the entropy floor) and an experiment suite on ARC-TGI grid-transformation generators with adaptive holdout attacks. Experiments confirm the theory: finite-audit deviation scales as n^{-0.527}; signed progress resists clip-farming, stream leakage, and noisy-TV curiosity; naive reusable audits are exploitable by black-box scalar feedback, while standard release defenses keep the attack below the 2 Delta_n threshold. Signed compression progress on a sealed audit is an accounting signal of genuine improvement.

Certify or Refuse: A Cross-Model Map for Selective Risk Control with Coverage Floors under Covariate Shift

Certified selective predictors attain whatever coverage they attain; operators impose an automation floor: answer at least a ββ-fraction of shifted target traffic with at most an αα-fraction of answers wrong. Under bounded-ratio covariate shift we prove the Floor Certification Map: once that floor must be certified alongside the selection-conditioned risk αα, certification acquires a feasibility frontier and a two-resource complexity map, additive up to constants: risk in labeled source, the floor in unlabeled target samples. The rates are local, needing a regular frontier margin, slack below the local-regime threshold, and lattice conditions: pre-registered with a lattice margin for the upper bounds, compatible per-slack for the lower. The displayed split is the operational route; oracle weights also allow a labeled-source floor estimate. Three model-tagged results: a lower bound (Model-B), a matching oracle-weight upper bound (Model-A), and an implementable upper bound (Model-B') valid under a pre-registered exact stratified-shift model with nuisance cost priced explicitly. The match is across these models rather than a single-model minimax theorem, and necessarily so: over the full bounded-ratio class no unknown-weight procedure matches at any sample size (Model-B is inconsistent, witnessed at α=β=1/2α=β=1/2). The nuisance's necessity is only partially settled. Complexity tracks a localized accepted-region functional, not global effective sample size (ESS), on both sides, though a fixed-ESS separation theorem is left open; both lower-bound axes vanish as β0β\to0, so the floor creates the map. Empirically, the registered bite family diverges with log-log slope 2.002-2.002 within its pre-registered band; a 1,024-cell audit records 0 violations where the formal certificates fire; and a single-corpus SQuAD-to-NewsQA feasibility audit returns honest refusal.
