Abstract

Layout-to-image diffusion models have achieved impressive semantic controllability by conditioning generation on category-level segmentation maps. However, such category-aligned control is not necessarily instance-addressable: multiple nearby objects from the same category are often treated as a shared semantic region, leading to ambiguous boundaries, averaged appearances, and feature confusion among instances. This limitation is particularly evident in urban scene synthesis, where small and crowded pedestrians or vehicles require fine-grained instance separation while preserving global scene consistency. In this paper, we propose InstancePin, an instance-addressable layout-to-image diffusion framework that pins each object instance with an explicit coordinate anchor. Instead of directly injecting instance masks into the pretrained backbone, InstancePin introduces an independent instance-aware adapter to preserve the category-level generation prior while learning instance-specific spatial control. For each instance, its center coordinate is encoded with Fourier features and projected into a coordinate token, which serves as a spatial anchor queried by latent image features through coordinate pinning attention. To make these anchors spatially meaningful, we further supervise the coordinate attention maps with instance regions, encouraging each coordinate token to activate its corresponding object area. Finally, an instance-mask guided fusion module routes pretrained backbone features to non-instance regions and adapter features to instance regions, enabling local instance refinement without sacrificing global semantic fidelity. Extensive experiments on Cityscapes demonstrate that InstancePin mitigates instance entanglement in dense layouts and improves both image fidelity and semantic consistency.

ControlRef: Efficient Layout-Guided Multi-Instance Generation via Anchored 4D-RoPE

Layout-guided multi-instance generation is essential for controllable image synthesis in Multi-Modal Diffusion Transformers (MM-DiTs). However, integrating this capability into unified architectures remains challenging. Prior frameworks rely on redundant full-resolution canvas padding and Shifted-RoPE to manage multiple reference images. This mechanism drastically inflates computational overhead for sparse layouts and disrupts critical low-frequency RoPE features, creating a severe spatial-frequency compromise that blurs absolute spatial correspondence. To overcome these limitations, we propose ControlRef, a highly efficient and precise multi-instance synthesis framework. ControlRef utilizes a Unified Instance-Layout Control (UILC) attention mask to strictly decouple inter-instance semantic interactions and enforce precise regional binding. To further promote region-level spatial alignment, we introduce Anchored 4D-RoPE, a novel positional encoding mechanism that directly anchors tokens to their absolute geometric centers. By pre-aligning reference images to their corresponding bounding box resolutions, physically anchoring both layout and reference tokens to their absolute geometric centers, and stacking the references along the z-axis, Anchored 4D-RoPE natively preserves spatial priors and mitigates the spatial-frequency compromise without lossy shifting. Extensive experiments demonstrate that ControlRef achieves state-of-the-art visual fidelity and localization accuracy, while concurrently slashing inference latency by over 80% in sparse layouts and reducing memory overhead by 50% in dense scenarios.

Learning to Generate Multiple Objects from Dense and Occluded Layouts

Text-to-image diffusion models fail to generate correct object counts in dense scenes, where overlapping instances collapse into indistinguishable structures despite appearing visually plausible. We identify this as instance ownership collapse: tokens from overlapping objects interact freely through attention, while heavily occluded instances receive weak supervision due to their small visible areas. We address this through layout-aware attention biases that softly bias token interactions toward region-consistent grouping and suppress cross-instance leakage, paired with an amodal-balanced loss that amplifies gradients for occluded objects based on their occlusion level. To enable systematic evaluation, we introduce OverlapDepth-45K, a benchmark of densely overlapping scenes with amodal supervision. Our approach substantially improves count accuracy and prevents instance merging while preserving image quality. Project page: https://bachngoh.github.io/AIBL

Envisioning Beyond the Few: Disentangled Semantics and Primitives for Few-Shot Atypical Layout-to-Image Generation

The layout-to-image (L2I) task enables fine-grained control over image generation via object categories and spatial layouts. However, existing L2I methods yield fragmented and distorted generations under few-shot atypical settings. We term this failure as representation fragmentation, arising from a granularity mismatch that entangles semantic identity with visual details. To address this issue, we propose a representation-driven framework that disentangles semantics from primitives for robust few-shot adaptation. Specifically, Semantic Anchoring aggregates categorical semantics into anchors for stable identity, while Primitive Imbuing models recomposable primitives for robust local detail modeling. Conceptual Steering further regulates optimization with a saliency-aware objective to preserve foreground semantic consistency. Extensive experiments demonstrate consistent improvements in the 5-shot regime over state-of-the-art L2I methods in both visual fidelity and alignment across diverse atypical domains.
