Abstract

We present JoyAI-Talker, a full-duplex speech dialogue system that delivers robust foundation model capabilities while empowering empathetic interaction and voice agent intelligence. JoyAI-Talker adopts a modular Thinker-Talker architecture and further implements a unified speech-text joint training pipeline to mitigate the common "cognitive degradation" bottleneck, thereby largely preserving the model's core textual reasoning, STEM, and logical capabilities while extending them to speech-based interaction. For expressive speech synthesis, the Talker module employs a text-controllable generation paradigm that enables natural-language instructions to flexibly control vocal attributes and localized paralinguistic events, such as laughter and sighs, supporting more expressive and fine-grained speech responses. To enhance conversational empathy, we introduce the Persona-Adaptive Empathetic Response (PAER) framework. PAER employs a hierarchical cognitive pipeline to extract non-verbal speaker cues, such as gender, age, and emotional state, from raw input audio, incorporate them into the Thinker's CoT reasoning, and generate context-adaptive responses that align semantically appropriate text with fine-grained control over utterance-level expressiveness and localized paralinguistic events, including sighs, speaking rate, and volume. We further integrate Joy-Duplex, a state-driven, plug-and-play full-duplex framework that functions as an efficient gating engine for real-time turn control. Extensive evaluations show that JoyAI-Talker achieves highly competitive performance on foundational T2T and S2T benchmarks. In full-duplex evaluation, the system reaches a high response rate of 0.88 under user interruptions while maintaining an extremely low false-trigger rate under background speech, demonstrating its readiness for fluid and natural speech dialogue.

TASTE2: Text-Aligned Speech Modeling and Deployment toward Full-Duplex Voice Interaction

Full-duplex voice interaction requires more than utterance-level conversion. It must process streaming speech, manage turn-taking and interruptions, while preserving pretrained linguistic competence and acoustic paralinguistic cues. We ask whether TASTE (Text-Aligned Speech Tokenization and Embedding) provides a viable path toward this goal. We present TASTE2, which transforms utterance-level TASTE into an incremental dialogue stack. A shared text-token vocabulary removes word-level averaging, while modality-aligned dialogue training predicts one continuous audio latent per text token without interleaving heterogeneous token streams. An incremental Speech Detokenizer enables streaming synthesis through CosyVoice2. After speech and dialogue training, TASTE2 (Merge) reaches 56.3% on LLaMA-Questions against a 57.3% Qwen2.5-7B Instruct text-only reference (98.2% accuracy retention), and TASTE2 (Direct) reaches 53.0% (92.4% retention). We build TASTE2 VoiceBot, which processes user speech incrementally, streams synthesized audio, and stops generation on barge-in. On Full-Duplex-Bench v1.0, TASTE2 and TASTE2 VoiceBot handle interruptions well while maintaining high conversational coherence. Natural conversation remains challenging, and deployed mean time to first audio is 2.701 s on two NVIDIA RTX A6000 after TensorRT acceleration. Finally, to our knowledge, we provide the first systematic characterization of explicit paralinguistic control in a TASTE based model. Fast speaking rate serves as a cross-strategy proof of concept after dialogue SFT, while emotion control is strategy dependent and the remaining attributes stay weak. Together, these results establish TASTE based modeling as a practical route toward full-duplex systems while identifying natural conversation robustness, speech generation latency, and feature general paralinguistic control as open challenges. PRISM: Prosody-Integrated Multi-Agent Reasoning Framework for Empathetic Spoken Dialogue

Empathetic spoken dialogue systems require not only semantically appropriate responses but also emotionally aligned prosodic expression. However, cascade pipelines often discard acoustic cues during speech-to-text conversion, while end-to-end speech models lack interpretable control over emotion and knowledge integration. To address these challenges, we propose PRISM, a multi-agent framework for empathetic spoken dialogue that decouples speech perception, response generation, and speech synthesis into coordinated components. PRISM introduces a prosody-to-language translation mechanism to stabilize large language model reasoning and enables on-demand invocation of external knowledge tools for empathetic dialogue generation. Experimental results demonstrate that PRISM achieves consistent improvements in empathy, prosodic appropriateness, and text response generation quality across objective and subjective metrics. Sympatheia: Emotionally Adaptive Voice Assistant with Continuous Affect Conditioning

Empathetic spoken dialogue systems must infer a user's emotional state to respond appropriately, yet everyday speech often carries weak, neutral, or ambiguous affective cues. To address this, we introduce Sympatheia, a speech-to-speech dialogue framework conditioned on affect inferred from the user's speech and, when available, explicit affect specifications provided as a continuous valence--arousal (VA) control signal by a multimodal sensing module or user interface. To train our model, we construct Sympatheia-18k, an emotion-conditioned synthetic spoken dialogue corpus with 12 emotion anchors. This dataset includes an emotional split for learning affective speech behavior, and a neutral split that pairs emotionally neutral queries with multiple emotion-conditioned responses to isolate explicit emotion control in emotionally ambiguous cases. Empirical results show that Sympatheia outperforms speech conversational baselines in generating responses whose semantic content and spoken delivery are both emotionally appropriate. We further show that the same VA interface can integrate emotion estimates from diverse sensing modules, including facial expression, biosignals, and textual affect descriptions, improving response alignment when speech alone provides limited emotional evidence. These results suggest that continuous affect conditioning is an effective practical step for building emotionally adaptive voice assistants.
