Mapping Armenian Paris: Extracting and Geocoding Commercial Advertisements from the 20th-Century Diaspora Press

Abstract

This paper presents an end-to-end, IIIF-based pipeline that turns the digitised Armenian press of France into an interactive map of the 20th-century Parisian Armenian commercial community. On each page, commercial advertisements are located, read, and parsed into structured records, which are then geocoded and placed on the map. Western Armenian is under-resourced and unsupported by off-the-shelf layout and OCR models, so the pipeline uses vision-language models (VLMs) as a data-bootstrapping strategy: they produce usable structured records at a scale hand annotation could not reach, and stay reliable on the strongly curved scans where conventional line-level CRNN OCR breaks down. The contribution includes a 500-page Western Armenian press corpus with 3,270 advertisement-level annotations, a Label Studio template that captures detection and semantic fields in a single annotation pass, and a reproducible workflow transposable to other under-resourced historical corpora. More broadly, the work shows that VLM-driven data bootstrapping is an effective lever for under-resourced historical languages such as (Western) Armenian.

Semantic-Guided Reading Order Reconstruction in Historical Armenian Newspapers with LLMs

This paper addresses reading order reconstruction in historical Armenian newspapers, which combine complex layouts with limited language resources. We introduce a new annotated dataset of 66 pages and compare geometric heuristics, YOLO-based layout parsing, an end-to-end document model ECLAIR, and a hybrid method combining semantic zone detection with a generative LLM. Our hybrid method achieves the lowest error rates of all evaluated approaches, reducing ordering errors by up to 76% over the strongest geometric baseline, and remains robust in multi-page settings and under noisy OCR. Rather than targeting production the method is designed as a data bootstrapping strategy enabling rapid annotation in highly under-resourced scenarios. Alongside the dataset, we release a specialized Tesseract OCR model for historical Armenian print.

PereStruct: Multimodal Semantic Assembly for Robust Historical Document Parsing

Parsing historical documents with complex, non-standard layouts remains a fundamental bottleneck in large-scale archival digitization. Unlike modern typography, historical newspapers exhibit severe physical degradation and highly irregular page structures that confound even state-of-the-art vision-language models, presenting severe out-of-distribution challenges. We address this gap with an automated pipeline specifically designed for parsing historical newspapers, documents characterized by particularly intricate multi-column layouts. Our approach combines a fine-tuned YOLO architecture for layout analysis and block detection, trained on 1,426 fully human-annotated scanned pages, with a novel semantic assembly module that reconstructs articles by jointly modeling lexical-semantic similarity via TF-IDF, visual embeddings from our fine-tuned YOLO, and geometric layout constraints. This multi-modal integration yields state-of-the-art performance, achieving an F1 score of 0.904 on block-to-article mapping. Notably, end-to-end evaluation against vision-language models (Qwen3.6-35B-A3B and Qwen3.6-Plus) demonstrates that PereStruct achieves substantially higher fidelity (BLEU approximately 0.96 vs 0.34), validating that modular architectures excel where generic VLMs fail on complex historical layouts. To support reproducibility and advance research in this domain, we release both the training corpus of 599 annotated pages and a curated PereStruct benchmark of 93 pages with expert-verified ground-truth block-to-article mappings. This framework establishes a robust foundation for high-fidelity digitization and semantic reconstruction of complex archival materials.

From Zero to Hero: An Open LLM Ecosystem for Armenian

Pretraining data for Armenian, a morphologically rich and low-resource language, is scarce, and no open Armenian LLM has been released with the data and recipe needed to reproduce it. To address this gap, we curate and release two datasets. ArmWeb is an extensively validated corpus of 4.37M Armenian news documents. ArmSTEM is a parallel English-Armenian collection of 373K math and science problems with step-by-step solutions, translated into Armenian and verified through both answer-preserving LLM judgment and human evaluation. Continued pretraining of Gemma-4-E4B on these datasets yields arm-gemma-e4b, which outperforms every existing open Armenian model as well as its unadapted base, and is the first open Armenian LLM with complete training data and recipe. Our ablations show that news-only continued pretraining improves fluency while eroding knowledge, a pattern we also observe in existing Armenian models, and that a small share of verified translated STEM data reverses the loss. We further find that the largest public Armenian corpora overlap web-derived evaluation panels heavily, including a train/test self-overlap inside FineWeb-2. We openly release all data, models, and code.
